Charleston Fossil Adventures | Chilly Blackwater Fossil Hunt!
More tour participants out on a Fossil Kayaking Adventure with Charleston Fossil Adventures, LLC! This time we went to an underwater location that requires a permit through the state of South Carolina. Any collector wishing to find archeological or paleontological artifacts in navigable waterways in SC must obtain a permit through the state to collect and report these finds. At the end of these tours, we work with participants to properly catalog and report these finds. Don’t worry - they don’t want your shark teeth; scientists are primarily interested in articulated or associated remains. Needless to say, these clients found an incredible number of shark teeth: over 200 all told!

Hunting Fossilized Shark Teeth on the Beaches of South Carolina
A few friends and I got together to hunt the beaches of SC. We found a ton of shark teeth and other fossils. Most of the teeth are worn because they are dredged from the bottom of the rivers nearby.

We finally made a shark took video! We plan to make more vlogs of our adventures, especially our fossil hunting trips!
We took a weekend trip to Folly Beach to celebrate 14years together! Our trip was from November 1st through November 4th 2018. We decided to stop by a creek in Summerville, SC before heading to Folly Beach. This was our second time fossil hunting in this same creek. Shane did a lot of research to figure out the best creeks in Summerville.
Hunting Angustidens shark teeth in SC
Fossil Hunt
Episode #29 1/20/2019
Fossil hunting is not just for paleontologists. Although it doesn't hurt to bring one along. We had an excellent one accompany us when we made our first fossil-finding foray. His name is Ashby Gale and he is the owner of Charleston Fossil Adventures, which conducts tours in South Carolina to uncover fossils in places where you wouldn't expect to find them.
In our case, we scoured the beach in Edisto Beach State Park. There are millions of shells littering the beach, or course, but if you keep your eyes open and know what to look for, you can find quite a few fossils hiding among them – or in some cases, in plain sight. Ashby helped us learn to spot them and identify them, and we were able to keep all that we found! They ranged in age from about 11,000 years to over a million years old. We even found some bits of Native American pottery, and some glass from a Nineteenth Century vacation retreat on a little island that sat just offshore but now has vanished (it's like South Carolina's own version of Atlantis). And we saw some interesting creatures that are still living – some dolphins surfacing not far offshore.
A fascinating and informative afternoon in our science classroom on the beach. A big thank you to our teacher and guide, Ashby! We're eager to go looking for fossils again, and we're confident that sooner or later we'll discover an unknown species.
Have you ever found a fossil? Do you have a favorite one?
Special thanks to for providing the adventure.

Surface Collecting Shark Teeth in Summerville Creeks after the Rains
We had pretty good rain recently so into the ditches we went! There were a good variety of fossil shark teeth laying on the bottom for our fossil collecting pleasure - makos, angustidens, hemipristis, and even a little megalodon or two. My boy once again comes away with tooth of the day with his superb little angustidens.
Back to Collecting Shark Teeth in Summerville Creeks
Its been a while since I went collecting teeth in the creeks so I took the afternoon to go hunt an old favorite spot since we had some good rain last night. It was surprisingly productive - I got several nice shark teeth including makos, tiger sharks, snaggletooth shark, and several angustidens teeth one of which was pathologic - a super rare find!

Yes the River has Alligators... And Giant Shark Teeth!
My son and I went to the river again in search of paleo bounty and we decided to do some filming en route to the fossil hunting site. Good thing we were prepared because we spotted an alligator and I was able to catch some video of him. Its the first alligator we've ever seen in the area where we hunt, and it just serves as a reminder that there are real hazards in this hobby. Luckily the hunting spot was far from the alligator because it was loaded and I would have hated to hunt somewhere else. I got a 4 inch angustidens on this trip that is my biggest of the year so far.

Back to Creek Collecting for Shark Teeth in Summerville SC
The weezling and I have been wanting to get back in the creeks for a while now, but the lack of rain has really cramped our style. Yesterday, 3 to 4 inches of the wet stuff fell in the Summerville area so this morning we went out with high hopes. We went to two creeks and did ok, but nothing like we used to pull in after rain like we had yesterday. Our best find of the day was a small angustidens, but even if we had come back with nothing it still would have been a fun time hanging out and being outside on a beautiful day.
Another Successful Megalodon Tooth Hunt in South Carolina
I found a new spot a few weeks ago and I've been going back when it rains. Its really sparse, but when it hits, it hits big! Its like megalogon roulette all the sudden here lately. Nothing else really to speak of, but the megalodon teeth are just choice. There are also big black bones and lots and lots of shells. We don't see a lot of shells around here so next time I go out I'll video some of those. Anyway, the new megalodon tooth is 4 9/16 inches long and its serrated like the other one which made a curtain call in this video for the side by side comparison.
Megatooth Returns
You might have noticed the paucity of megalodon teeth in our videos lately - that's because we've been hunting sites where they aren't found. But this video re-visits the best spot of the year with some never before seen footage. I had a few good finds left to show from there, but my girlfriend was with me much of the time and she found some incredible things too. I'm appreciative to her for sharing her finds, including the biggest megalodon tooth she's ever found. Its a BEAST - Truly a megatooth of the highest order. Spend a few minutes and share in her elation at the find of her life. Thanks for watching!

The Best Megalodon Tooth Hunting Site I Ever Found
I don't throw around the word best especially when it comes to hunting megalodon teeth because there have been so many good spots during my 30+ years of collecting, but I feel confident in using it here. I can't believe how lucky I got finding this spot. It was completely untouched and the bottom of the dig was just at the top of the fossil bearing formation. That meant all I had to do was look down in some spots to find teeth, and in the rest, I only had to dig off a foot or two of overburden. There were bones everywhere which is the tell-tale indicator of megalodon and other fossil shark teeth. It didn't take long to dig one out, then another, and another. Then when I walked on the piles after heavy rain there were more big teeth. All together I was able to collect this site for about a week and I found 17 complete megalodon teeth in that short amount of time. I'm not planning on retiring anytime soon, but it is going to be very difficult to top this spot. Summerville, I love you!
