Chateau Angelus Premier Grand Cru, St Emilion 2008
The 2008 was another challenging vintage after the 2007. May and June saw cold, wet weather that continued right through the summer into early September with many of grapes suffering from mildew and ripening very uneven. Many vintners held their collective breath yet feared for a disaster. As often occurs in Bordeaux, September was saved as sunny and dry weather took over for the remainder of the month. Harvest was quite late with yields low and only wineries with deep resources could work hard enough to select the best grapes and make good wine. Chateau Angelus, run by the always cerebral and dedicated Hubert de Bouard, is one of those estates that carefully navigated the bumpy road, producing one of the outstanding wines of the vintage.
Juicy, framed with freshness and retaining classic notes of black cherry, black currant, along with dark plum, and underbrush and superbly balanced sweet tannins, this is a wine that offers up energy and a wonderful spine of acidity. Unlike the bigger vintages such as 2005, 2009 & 2010, the '08 is begging to enjoyed now but should age effortlessly for two decades.

Tasting the 2004 & 2005 St. Emilion Chateau Angelus with owner Hubert de Bouard
Visiting Chateau Angelus is an experience that should be on your list of must do's when touring Bordeaux. Located in the right bank village of St. Emilion, less than a mile from the famous bell tower from which the estate is named, lies some of the most scenic vineyards on the right bank. These are wines dominated by a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and yield some of the most balanced, delicious and age worthy wines in the region.
As you will immediately see, Hubert, the seventh generation owner of Angelus, is exceptionally well studied and passionate about the history of the estate and the wines. Just before our tasting, he guided us on a hillside tour, overlooking the vineyards, and proudly shared the long history of the estate.
By the way, it was so refreshing to hear Hubert not shy away from recommending that you enjoy a big wine, such the '05 now, as long as you treat it properly with many hours of decanting.

Wild Berry, Spice Box, Complex and Layered
Red wine with a quite developed colour here. It still has a quite dense ruby-red centre, but towards the rim it is rather tawny. Starting to fading a little bit, so it indicates a certain age. Really fine nose here it is certainly indicating maturity here, and I would first of all say complex. It is actually blending a lot of different things together here. I pick up some damp tobacco, cedar wood, almost like cigar box, with some leather, some earthy notes, smoke, truffle. There is also quite vigorous fruit. Still have a lot of wild berry notes in there. We still have a good density on the palate. Finely distributed tannin. So plenty of extract, but a good maturity here. A lot of those wild berry notes, with those fine spices; spice box, with tobacco and wood. So quite sophisticated I would say at this stage. It should probably reach twelve, fifteen years somewhere in that direction. So complex and layered, with a very long finish. I think the strength here is really that it starts out here quite powerful with copious amount of fruit, but it truly has a very long finish with nuance and spiciness. So a mature and sophisticated wine to enjoy today.
