Les Baux-de-Provence, France
Les Baux-de-Provence in the south of France is a remarkable sight, a unique stone village dramatically perched 750 feet high on a rocky plateau with a history dating to the Middle Ages, and a prehistory going back probably about 8,000 years. Les Baux was once a powerful medieval castle that controlled vast territories, including 79 other villages throughout Provence, but now it's a tiny quaint ruin.
Charming as could be, this cozy hill-top hamlet is a major tourist attraction with 1.5 million annual visitors, making it the second most-popular site in the region after the Pope's Palace in Avignon. This tells you that it is very worthwhile, but it can get uncomfortably crowded unless you take preventive action, like visiting in the off-season, or arriving early or late in the day.

It's only about 3000 feet long and about 700 feet wide and that's it.”
The medieval village was built up from the 10th century and by the peak of occupation during the late 14th century nearly 3,000 people lived in this small space, although the permanent population nowadays living inside the old town is only 20 people.
The plateau was naturally easy to defend due to vertical cliffs all around, and was further reinforced with stone walls and castle as protection from invasion by Franks, Catalans, Saracens and marauding bandits of the chaotic Middle Ages. However the castle was finally attacked and destroyed in the 1600s by Cardinal Richelieu and his large well-armed French army, leaving us with dramatic ruins of the castle, which they call the Château. And it retains a wild setting among rugged rocky hills.
You will not get lost because there is only one main pedestrian lane about 300 meters long with a few short side alleys leading to viewpoints. You really don’t need much of a guidebook to help get through this smallest of Provencal destinations – just follow your nose and wander about. But we do have some suggestions.
There are two parts to visit in Les Baux -- the free village, with its pedestrian lanes, shops, restaurants and old buildings, and the paid attraction, the ruins of that castle on the plateau where you can see some of the old buildings and fortifications.

Les Baux-de-Provence, France part 1 the village
The town of Les Baux-des-Provence in the south of France is a remarkable sight, a unique stone village whose important history dates to the Middle Ages, with an ancestry stretching further back for millennia. On a rocky plateau surrounded by steep cliffs, Les Baux has survived through various important historical periods, sometimes playing a major role. As a medieval fortress it was easy to defend. Then in Renaissance days it continued as a thriving village. In later times it was falling apart and rather depopulated, but it was then rebuilt in the middle 20th century and renovated and restored. André Malraux, the France culture minister had a lot to do with preserving this town and now it's a great attraction for the visitor. We wander along the pedestrian lanes, do a little shopping and enjoy spectacular views. Our tour was conducted by Provence Reservations.

Les Baux-de-Provence, France part 2 the Château
While at Les Baux-des-Provence in the south of France you want to visit the museum and Château out on the plateau at the end of the pedestrian lane. We also take you on another walk through the narrow, peaceful pedestrian lanes of this historic stone village, carved into the steep plateau.
The old castle was attacked back in the 1600s but there are dramatic ruins and many parts of the Château still standing. They even built houses inside stone caves they carved out of the limestone. The Citadel has a steep staircase you can climb to gain a spectacular view over the countryside, with extensive olive groves reaching to the distant Alpilles Mountains. On the other side you look down on the stone village, dramatically framed by a valley and more mountains.
Among the exhibits at the Château is an ancient sling, a model of a trébuchet that was used back in the Middle Ages, which could sling large boulders 200 yards, and there is a battering ram, another ancient weapon of war
This is the perfect naturally fortified site, so it's no wonder people have been living here for so long, especially well-protected back in the Middle Ages, a time of fraught and peril. The Knights who ruled from here were very powerful, controlling about 80 other towns and villages throughout the region.
There is an ongoing violent history, battling back and forth with attackers from Barcelona in the Catalan area of what is now Spain to the west, and various invaders from the Eastern side as well as the Saracens, Muslim invaders coming up from Africa, so Les Baux-des-Provence was a hot bed of contention, surviving fighting that went on for centuries, as shown in the castle museum and historic site.
Les Baux de Provence Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Les Baux in France.
Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic medieval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D. Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds' Midnight Mass. Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Musee D'Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town. In times of freedom the country's finest troubadours gathered in the town's now ruined castle. Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in 1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle. Like no other village in the Alpilles, Les Baux-De-Provence has long been the centre of this region's glorious history.

The Château des Baux is a fortified castle built during the 10th century, located in Les Baux-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, southern France. Although already inhabited in the Bronze Age, Les Baux-de-Provence did not really start growing until the medieval period. Built in the 10th century, the fortress and the small town it protects were ruled by the lords of Baux for five hundred years, in the thick of the ceaseless conflicts that ravaged Provence.
It was also at Les Baux that the most famous minstrels and troubadours of the day sang songs of courtly love to the maidens of the House of Les Baux. In the 15th century, the lords of Baux were superseded by the barons of the Masons des Comtes de Provence. This was a golden age for the Château, before it came under the control of the kings of France. From the 16th century on, family feuds and wars of religion brought on the decline of the town until the fortress was pulled down in 1633 on the orders of Louis XIII.
Visitors to the Château des Baux can see full-scale replicas of huge siege engines, including a couillard, bricole, ballista, and the biggest trebuchet in Europe, which is launched during demonstrations several times daily between April and September.
