Tanjong Chek Jawa (or Tanjung Chek Jawa or simply Chek Jawa) is a cape and the name of its 100-hectare wetlands located on the south-eastern tip of Pulau Ubin, an island off the north-eastern coast of the main island of Singapore. Chek Jawa is among the last few places left in Singapore with a natural rocky shore.
The wetlands are unique as several ecosystems can be observed in one area – sandy beach, rocky beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves and coastal forest. The site forms part of the Ubin–Khatib Important Bird Area (IBA), identified as such by BirdLife International because it supports significant numbers of visiting and resident birds, some of which are threatened.
Previously a virtual unknown, Chek Jawa came into national prominence and focus only since the early 2000s when the area's rich biodiversity was discovered almost by chance during a nature outing at low tide. News on the impending land reclamation works planned by the government on the area sparked a rare show of public-led and coordinated effort to reverse the reclamation plans. A group of volunteers, headed by botanist Joseph Lai (who first discovered Chek Jawa's rich ecosystems in December 2000), conducted a biodiversity survey months before the area was to be reclaimed in 2001. The volunteers then submitted a report and petitioned to the government for the preservation of the natural habitat.
The Singapore Government, in turn, surprised many when they acceded to these requests in December 2001. They agreed to leave the Chek Jawa area untouched for the next ten years. Conservation efforts were made by the Ministry of National Development to preserve the area.
On 8 July 2007, the nature preserve was re-opened to the public. The Singapore Government added new amenities with a visitor management plan for Chek Jawa, at a cost of S$7 million. These included a 1.1-kilometre boardwalk, a 20-metre tall viewing tower and a visitor centre with a viewing jetty.
The new boardwalk running along the coast and into the mangrove area allows visitors to get up close to plant and marine life such as fiddler crabs and monitor lizards, without damaging the area. Special care was taken to construct the boardwalk, which is made from concrete but simulated to resemble timber. This is more environmentally friendly as it cuts down on the use of wood while still retaining its natural feel.
The free seven-story viewing tower called the Jejawi Tower allows visitors to view the tree canopy and observe birdlife such as the collared kingfisher and straw-headed bulbul.
At the visitor centre, which was converted from a Tudor-style house built in the 1930s, visitors can learn more about Chek Jawa's wildlife.

Road To Chek Jawa Pulau Ubin
This is a time-lapse video showing the route from Ubin Town (near Main Jetty) to Punai Hut (near Chek Jawa).
The van travelled along Jalan Ubin, Jalan Sam Heng and made a right turn at Beberek Hut, passing by Balai Quarry before reaching Punai Hut.
The usual way to Punai Hut is to travel via Jalan Durian. This path was not taken as there was a fallen tree on the road during the time of filming.

Boat-ride is SGD 3 per person per side, with boats ferrying upon arrival of 12 pax for every ride - otherwise they wait. Bikes available aplenty for reasonable rent upon arrival. Place also popular for kayaking. Ideal to carry own food and water as well as mosquito repellent. The island - a must for one full day outdoors on a good sunny & cloudy day.

【Nature walk】2018.0301 Chek Jawa Wetlands
Chek Jawa is on the east side of the Pulau Ubin island, consists of 6 eco-systems and diverse array of animals neatly cohabit within these unique habitats.
The wetland tour was conducted when the tides level recede to 0.5M and below for at least 2 hours when the intertidal flat grounds and sandbar were revealed.

Pulau Ubin Info:
Pulau Ubin is an island northeast of mainland Singapore. There are cycling trails and footpaths crisscrossing the island, going past disused granite quarries and traditional kampongs (villages). Kingfishers and bulbul birds inhabit the tidal flats and mangroves of the Chek Jawa Wetlands. The Jejawi observation tower and a looped boardwalk offer views of this area. A local temple, Fo Shan Ting Da Bo Gong Temple, houses statues of local deities.
The name Pulau Ubin literally means Granite Island in Malay, which explains the many abandoned granite quarries there. Pulau means island, and Ubin is said to be a Javanese term for squared stone. To the Malays, the island is also known as Pulau Batu Ubin, or Granite Stone Island. The rocks on the island were used to make floor tiles in the past and were called Jubin, which was then shortened to Ubin.
Since the British founding of Singapore, the island has been known for its granite. The numerous granite quarries on the island supply the local construction industry. The granite outcrops are particularly spectacular from the sea because their grooves and fluted sides create furrows and ridges on each granite rock slab.
The granite from Pulau Ubin was used in the construction of Horsburgh Lighthouse. Tongkangs ferried the huge rock blocks (30 by 20 feet) from the island to Pedra Branca, the site of the lighthouse, in 1850 and 1851.
Later, the granite was also used to build the Singapore-Johor Causeway. Most of the quarries are not in operation today and are being slowly recolonised by vegetation or filled with water. Apart from quarrying, farming and fishing were the principal occupations of the inhabitants of the island in the past. It is also called Selat Tebrau (tebrau is a kind of large fish). In the 1970s as the granite quarries closed down and jobs dwindled, residents began leaving the island.
During the 1950s and 1970s, there were 2,000 people living on the island and the Bin Kiang School was established in 1952 for the increasing number of children, from money donated by the Chinese resident. Lessons prior to this were conducted on the village wayang stage. With a student population that once numbered 400, enrolment fell as the Singapore mainland developed. The school closed in 1985 and was demolished on 2 April 2000. There was also a private Malay school around 1956 at Kampung Melayu, which closed in the late 1970s.
Pulau Ubin is one of the last areas in Singapore that has been preserved from urban development, concrete buildings and tarmac roads. As of 2012, there are only 38 people living on the island.
Pulau Ubin's wooden house villages and wooden jetties, relaxed inhabitants, rich and preserved wildlife, abandoned quarries and plantations, and untouched nature make it the last witness of the old kampong Singapore that existed before modern industrial times and large-scale urban development.
