Breaking years of icy ties, the two states could potentially reshape the regional landscape for years to come with improved relations. Anticipation mounts with the improved inter-Korean relationship. Hopes are high for the upcoming summit that it will usher in spring with peace on the Korean peninsula. Meet those who are anticipating the summit to feel their hopes for reunification.

“PEACE TRAILS” IN THE DMZ / KBS뉴스(News)

While wartime excavation efforts are underway, the so-called peace trail project has also been launched in one section of the demilitarized zone. The Goseong trail located in the eastern part of the zone was opened to the public last month, and trail in Cheorwon is to be opened next month. Baengma Hill in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do Province, was the site of one of the most brutal battles of the Korean War. The ownership of the hill changed hands 24 times after repeated attacks and counterattacks. For the first time since Korea's national division, Baengma Hill has finally been opened to the public. The pristine, lush scenery of the hill has numerous traces of war. Right next to the hill lies the Gongjaksae slope. It was named so because it is shaped like a peacock's tail. It overlooks the Yeokgokcheon Stream, which begins and ends in the North. Across the stream lies the famous Hwasalmeori Hill. During the Korean war, it was the site of a fierce battle between South Korean and Chinese forces that left scores of soldiers dead or injured. Not so long ago, the South and the North removed landmines in the area is a gesture of reconciliation and healing. All these historic sites can be seen on a peace trail in Cheorwon. The trail begins on Baengma Hill, passes by Hwasalmeori Hill and stretches all the way to a front line guard post. Its total length is 15 kilometers. It takes about three hours to see the entire area on foot and by car. The ordinary public will be allowed to visit the trail starting next month. Reservations for peace trail tours can be made on the Internet.

The DMZ Peace Trail in Goseong, Gangwon-do Province has become a hot tourist spot, drawing more than 10,000 visitors in just four months since its opening. Also, the second phase of the Peace Trail project is scheduled to begin shortly.

The DMZ Peace Trail in Goseong opened in late April. This new tourist destination with a walk along the 2.7-kilometer coastal fence provides scenic views of the East Sea and the demilitarized zone. Word of mouth attracted more than 10,000 visitors in just four months since the trail opened.
[Soundbite] JU HYEONG-DON(VISITOR) : It's hard to make reservations. I want to come back again if I get a chance.
Authorities are also pushing for a project to build a special DMZ tourist zone in conjunction with the Peace Trail. The second phase of the Peace Trail project built around the Geumgangsan Observatory is scheduled to begin shortly. The northernmost observatory in South Korea will be remodeled with various amenities for visitors. It used to be opened only temporarily during holidays or for special occasions, but it will likely be operated all year round. Also, 1.6 billion won will be invested to turn a nearby building into a restaurant specializing in North Korean cuisine by early next year. Goseong County Office has secured 8.1 billion won in state funding to build a suspension bridge and a trekking trail from the Unification Observatory to the DMZ Museum.
[Soundbite] KIM CHANG-RAE(GOSEONG COUNTY OFFICIAL) : We plan to invest KRW 26.9 bn to turn the entire area around the Unification Observatory into a peace tourism zone by 2022. The project will make use of the guard post inside the Civilian Control Line.
Goseong County also plans to develop DMZ tour programs to attract foreign visitors and hold a DMZ peace tourism week.

S. Korea to open 3 trails leading to DMZ for civilians

South Korea is planning to build hiking trails leading up the Demilitarized Zone and allow civilian access to them.
The government hopes to turn what was once viewed as a painful scar from the Korean War... into a symbolic area for peace.

South Korea is opening up three hiking trails leading up the DMZ... to allow civilian access to the area for the first time since the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement in 1953.
The government will do all it can to transform the DMZ, a scar from the war that separated the two Koreas,... into the frontline of peace and prosperity. We will eventually make it a symbolic place for world peace and nature.
Tentatively called the DMZ Peace Trails, they involve the three South Korean border towns of Paju, Cheorwon and Goseong -- one each in the west, the center and the east.
In late April, the government first plans to start a pilot program at the Goseong trail where visitors will be able to go either on foot or by vehicle and get as close as possible to the DMZ.
The opening dates for the Paju and Cheorwon trails have not been set.
Some are concerned about safety... since the trails go through certain areas where the military is active.
But civilians will be escorted by heavily-armed soliders and will carry bullet-proof vests and helmets.
Seoul's Defense Ministry is in discussions with UN Command to get approval for civilians to go into the DMZ and to ensure their safety.
For the peace trail project, the Unification Ministry's Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Council has approved 3.9 million U.S. dollars.
Those hoping to walk along the Goseong trail can apply for a lottery on the websites of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Tourism Organization starting April 11th.

Those living inside the Civilian Control Line in northern Gyeonggi Province have to undergo strict security checks whenever they pass through the checkpoint. They have been calling for the improvement of the entry procedure, since they have to receive a security check again even when they leave the town briefly on business. A new pilot system will be introduced next year, allowing the residents to use access cards with soldiers monitoring them on surveillance cameras.

This is a checkpoint at the Civilian Control Line in Yeoncheon-gun County, Gyeonggi Province, near North Korea. Soldiers check the information of every driver and their vehicle before allowing them in and out. This security check system has been in place for decades, drawing complaints from those living inside the Civilian Control Line. The residents complain that they have to undergo strict security checks whenever they leave and return, although soldiers already have all their personal information and can verify them more easily.
[Soundbite] Kim Geon-joong(Resident) : They know where I live. I ask them to open the gate quickly when I am busy. But they refuse to do so and ask for my name.
Having accepted the residents' request to ease access control rules, the Yeoncheon County Office and the military's 28th Division will introduce a new pilot security system next year. Under the new system, registered residents will use access cards while soldiers monitor them on surveillance cameras.
[Soundbite] Kim Kwang-cheol(Yeoncheon County Governor) : It is significant that more scientific devices will be used to ensure security and convenience of residents.
However, the current access control system will be maintained to check visitors who travel to visit security facilities or an observatory inside the Civilian Control Line.

Hello peopleeee! I went to see DMZ and it was and amazing experience. The demilitarized zone is an area where the use of guns is forbidden. Firts we went to Imjingak Park, an area where there are some monuments of the korean war and for the peace between the two Koreas. From there you can ses the Freedom Bridge, that was used to let south koreans go back to the south after the war. Then we went to Dorasan station, the last station in South Korea before North Korea. And then they brought us to Dora observatory, from where you can actually see the North. At the end we went to explore the 3rd infiltration tunnel but you can’t record inside there because you have to leave all your belongings in a locker. It was an AMAZING experience and super interesting. Hope u all like my vlog. I tried to record the most of it but there where a lot of areas where we could not.

Korean Demilitarized Zone
The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ; Hangul: 한반도 비무장지대; hanja: 韓半島非武裝地帶) is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ is a de-facto border barrier, which runs along the 38th parallel north. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It was created as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement between North Korea, the People's Republic of China, and the United Nations Command forces in 1953.
It is 250 kilometres (160 miles) long, approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) wide and, despite its name, is the most heavily militarized border in the world. The Northern Limit Line, or NLL, is the de-facto maritime boundary between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea and the coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily militarized.
