Chernobyl Tour | Pripyat | Ghost Town | Kiev | Ukraine | Exclusion Zone | Adventure Tours in Ukraine
The beautiful and deserted Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the North of Ukraine.
Just over thirty years ago, when the Soviet Union still existed, this area was prosperous and promising, with population over 130 000 people and around 50 000 of them lived in the unique town Pripyat - one of nine population centers in the USSR with the status of Atom City. Since the sadly famous nuclear disaster that happened on the 26th April 1986, the town Pripyat has been abandoned and is known today as the Ghost Town Pripyat. After the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, civilian population from this area was evacuated starting with the people from Pripyat, and they never returned to live on this land...
Today the area has prospering nature and wildlife, the New Safe Confinement (a.k.a Sarcophagus II) covers the Unit No.4 that exploded in 1986 thus keeping the surroundings safe from its radioactive leftovers. The levels of radiation are within norms, thus making the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone safe and legally open for tourists from all around the world. Tourism into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is developing quickly, and the abandoned beauty of the Zone welcomes travelers from all over the world to witness the quiet and empty streets of Pripyat, the greatness of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the New Safe Confinement, abandoned villages and the not so abandoned town Chernobyl... As a bonus you’ll witness the gigantic Radar Duga 1 (a.k.a The Russian Woodpecker) responsible for tracking Nuclear Missiles back in the day, and many other locations.
The professional English speaking guides at Adventure Tours in Ukraine will tell you all the stories about the days long gone and will walk you down the overgrown streets and alleys once full of devoted Soviet citizens, working hard to make the USSR greater and more powerful than ever.

What’s It Like to Visit CHERNOBYL & PRIPYAT? (Ukraine Exclusion Zone)
I visit Chernobyl, exploring the infamous site of a devastating nuclear accident in the former Soviet Union, located in modern day Ukraine. I stand outside reactor number 4, before heading into the ghostly abandoned city of Pripyat, walking around and exploring along with some other parts of the exclusion zone.

Is Kiev Safe? Kiev Ukraine Travel Guide - Kiev Food, Attractions & Chernobyl Radiation Zone!
Kiev Ukraine is a safe and happy place to travel! This Kiev travel guide will give you some perspective on attractions, food, and we’ll even visit the Chernobyl radiation zone - 9:12
Like all great cities, Kiev (or Kyiv) should be experienced by a local (just my opinion). We got pretty lucky with three amazing locals who showed all over the city. We arrived at night (immediately had vodka and Ukrainian snacks in the parking lot) and went straight to a lively little restaurant called Korchma Taras Bulba. They had dancers, amazing traditional Ukrainian food, and of course... more vodka! The young waiter was also named Daniel, so him and I made an instant connection. Young Daniel brought us kholodets, homemade sausages, smalec, “Ukrainian sushi,” Vrenyky, and Deruny. We quickly learned that Kiev food is delicious and very cheap!
The next day we went sightseeing to the Golden Gates, Sofiyivska Square, St Andrews Church, and then ate breakfast at Kanapa. The cottage cheese pancakes were life changing and every breakfast option I had was only €3! We finished off the day with Kiev street shopping, Lviv Handmade Chocolate, and a must visit to Pyana Vyshnya (aka Drunk Cherry Bar). We then ate dinner at Rebernia where I had the best ribs of my life!
Ok...let’s talk about Chernobyl. Confessions... I didn’t actually go on this trip, but my friend who came with us did and provided all the footage and information. Chernobyl today is a 1.5-2hr bus ride from Kiev and takes all day. Radiation is still high in certain areas and you’re basically walking through a ghost town. It seemed like a downer for me, so I decided to hang out in Kiev instead.
Our final day in Kiev brought us to the Kyiv Food Market and the absolute gorgeous holy area of Pechersk Lavra. We finished our Kiev travels at St Michael’s Golden Domed Monastery.
Kiev is 100% safe and 100% awesome! Your dollar really stretches in the city so take advantage of that. Food is cheap is you can literally find every type of cuisine in the city of Kiev. Have fun! Budmo!

Chernobyl, Ukraine ???????? - Inside the Nuclear Exclusion Zone
The Chernobyl Nuclear Exclusion Zone is an area of Ukraine which is uninhabitable following the disaster at the nuclear power plant in 1986. ☢️
The nearby city of Pripyat was evacuated and left abandoned in the wake of the tragedy and the people have never been allowed to return. The buildings have remained derelict and nature has once again reclaimed the area.
Tours into the Chernobyl Nuclear Exclusion Zone have become increasingly popular and the interest in dark tourism in recent years has seen a spike in the numbers visiting. It's easy enough to get to from Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine. Always ensure you visit with a reputable company!
The Duga-2 Radar is also with the Chernobyl Nuclear Exclusion Zone. The highly secret missile defence early-warning radar network was hidden until the fall of the Soviet Union.
Chernobyl has seen a surge in public interest lately due to the successful Sky & HBO production about the disaster. If you are interested in visiting, you should check this out -

Trip to Chernobyl-from-Kyiv in March 2019
March is one of the best time to travel to Chernobyl Exclusion zone - the place from which about 150000 people were evicted afer the explosion at ChNPP. There are not leafes on trees yet and visitors can see more.
Chernobyl tour
So we started at 8:00 am in the morning in Kyiv. The trip took us the whole day. Highlights of the tour were the deserted town of Zalyssia, Kopachi kindergarten, the Duga radar Station and Prypiat. The sarcophagus of the former nuclear plant was not that exciting.
HOW RADIOACTIVE IS CHERNOBYL IN 2019? - Ukraine
Before visiting the exclusion zone of Chernobyl - home to the worst nuclear disaster in the world, we wondered just how much radiation we would be exposed to.
After our tour with Chernobyl Tour, we discovered that as long as you have a guide and follow all of the safety precautions, walking around the Chernobyl's 10km-30km exclusion zone is relatively safe.
After the initial reactor exploded in 1986, over 600,000 liquidators have since cleansed the area of radiation. In addition, in July 2019 a New Safe Confinement has been built around Reactor 4 to confine the exposed reactor.
So visiting Chernobyl in 2019 is an observation of incredible achievement and the most respected bravery to all that put their lives at risk.

Chernobyl Museum Kiev (Ukrainian National Chornobyl Museum)
00:20 Chernobyl photos
01:08 Museum
The museum exposes some interesting objects related to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It however did not teach me anything that I have not known before. There are only very few description, and most of them are not translated to English. Entrance is very affordable at 10 UAH = (0.4 USD). I recommend a visit if you are around anyways and have around 30 minutes to spare.
On the other hand, I highly recommend doing a day-tour to Chernobyl, priced at around 100 USD. I participated in a guided tour back in February 2016 and have to admit that it was one of the most exciting places I have ever been to.

Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant located in the USSR (now Ukraine) which had a steam explosion in April of 1986. The nuclear radiation released in the days after the accident was truly catastrophic. The nearby town of Prypyat, which was home of many of the power plant workers, was evacuated the day after the explosion and the 50,000 residents were never to return to their homes.
Nuclear Reactor no. 4 (the site of the explosion) was covered with a temporary sarcophagus to confine the radiation in the weeks after the explosion, and a new sarcophagus, which has been designed to confine the radiation for another 100 years, was built by the EU and placed on site in October 2017.
We chose to see Chernobyl on a 1-day, small group tour which departed Kiev at 8:00 AM and returned around 6:00 PM. We had an English speaking guide, and a driver who transported us via minivan. On the way, a documentary was played to give us a deeper insight into the disaster and prepare us for what we were about to see. Even though I had expected to visit a mostly abandoned and derelict place, the reality was shocking. There were a handful of stops on the tour, including a small town with empty houses being swallowed back up by the forest, an abandoned kindergarten in the Chernobyl township with books and learning materials still scattered about on the desks, and an amusement park in Prypyat that was sadly never used as the town was evacuated before it could open. These confronting scenes are something that I will never forget.
Chernobyl: An Overview
Chernobyl is located about 100 km (62 mi) north of the city of Kiev, Ukraine. It takes around 2 hours to drive to Chernobyl from Kiev.
The exclusion zone is an area of 2,600 km2 (1,000 sq mi) around the nuclear power plant. This area is considered hazardous and is off-limits to the general public. There are multiple checkpoints that you have to pass through inside the exclusion zone. The area inside the checkpoint closest to the nuclear reactor has the most dangerous levels of radiation.
When tourists talk about visiting Chernobyl, we’re generally referring to the power plant itself, but the exclusion zone actually includes a few towns and a large forested area. Tours to Chernobyl will stop by many different places of interest within the exclusion zone.
Why do tourists visit Chernobyl?
Chernobyl has many appeals for tourists. For me, it was the decay. I was intrigued to explore a place that has been completely abandoned by humans for nearly 30 years. I wanted to find out what an apocalyptic world might look like.
My husband’s appeal was the modern history aspect – he wanted to see a place that is frozen in time from the soviet era. Walking through remnants from a culture that no longer exists is a fascinating thing to experience.
Others might be interested in the disaster itself, or maybe learn more about the dangers of nuclear power and the effect it can have on the environment if something goes wrong, like it did at Chernobyl. This is perhaps the only place in the world that you can see this first-hand.
Is it safe to visit Chernobyl?
I was asked this question by many people after my visit to Chernobyl. It’s a valid concern.
Radiation sticks around for a very long time, and the exclusion zone is not expected to be safe for humans to live in for the next 20,000 years. However, radioactivity can be considered mostly harmless in small doses (like when you get an x-ray, or even take a long-haul flight), and the day tours into the exclusion zone mean that you’re only exposed to low levels of radiation for just a few hours.
There are around 400 people that actually live inside the exclusion zone, and another several thousand that work in and around the power plant, decommissioning the retired reactors and constructing the new sarcophagus. They manage the radiation exposure by limiting their time in the most hazardous areas, and are also required to take longer breaks away from the site so that their bodies have time to recover.
Regardless of the trip you take, it's always worth getting travel insurance in case of an emergency. We use World Nomads because you can sign up or extend your trip any time (even if you've already left your home country), over 150+ adventure activities are covered (i.e. less fine print and loopholes), and most of all, there are plenty of successful claim stories online – so it actually works!
