Overlanding Tellico Plains Tennessee
In this video we travel from South Carolina to Tellico Plains Tennessee. We had already planned to meet with some folks from Kentucky Overland after getting an invite from Rob at Generation Overland. What we did not plan for is a hurricane to be coming straight for us the same weekend we were scheduled to leave. I wanted to run around eastern Tennessee anyways because Kristi and I are looking for a place to move out there so I figured we would leave a day early and camp in Tellico which was a half way point anyway. We stopped in Tellico Plains where we found an awesome campsite right by the creek and waterfall. I first discovered the area both times I went on the Trans America Trail but discovered this particular camp spot while heading home from a Winter Rally with North Georgia Overland.
We didnt get a chance to explore around like we would have liked to because we had some adulting we had to do in town and we wanted to head on to Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.

Cherohala Skyway - Fall Colors
Beautiful Cherohala Skyway runs from Tellico Plains TN to Robinsville NC. The colors of these mountains during fall are amazing. This video consists of timelapse photography shot on that 50 mile stretch of road. Enjoy, and get out there whenever you can! Shot on November 2, 2013.

Our first camping trip in the campervan conversion. This took place the 3rd week in October. We went to Cloudland Canyon State Park near Trenton, GA for one night, then drove the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC. We spent our 2nd night at the KOA near Murphy, NC then headed home. It was a great trip. This video shows the amazing fall colors on the Skyway.

Cherohala Skyway 2
The Cherohala Skyway was opened and dedicated in 1996. The road has been designated a National Scenic Byway. The road cost over 100 million dollars to construct. The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. The name “Cherohala” comes from the names of the two National Forests: “Chero” from the Cherokee and “hala” from the Nantahala. The Cherohala Skyway is located in southeast Tennessee and southwest North Carolina. The Skyway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with Robbinsville, North Carolina, and is about 40+ miles long.

Flying the Cherohala Skyway from Tennessee to North Carolina
The Cherohala Skyway is a beautiful road if you have some time to enjoy the view. Along the way I met some great people and had a great drive. I recommend driving this route to anyone in the area.

Indian Boundary Camping Fall 2017- Cherohala Skyway, Huckleberry bald, and waterfalls.
Indian Boundary is one of the best campgrounds in the Cherokee National Forest, and maybe one of the best around period. We camped there last fall and couldn't have asked for better weather and overall conditions.

East Tennessee Urbex: Abandoned KOA Campground
Today, I drove to the mountain town of Tellico Plains to explore a location that fellow explorers had told me about--the ruins of a KOA Kampground that had been destroyed on March 2, 2012 after an EF2 tornado had struck the area. In August of 2012, the owner of the campground announced that they had no plans to re-open in the future. As of now, August 2015, the remains of the Tellico Plains KOA Kampground are now quickly being swallowed up by nature. It appears to me that an area farmer has been using the outer edge of the land to put down his equipment and even a couple of hay bales. The land is owned by someone who lives in Knoxville. Rumors abound that a developer had made plans to purchase the land to build a chain hotel on this very spot. That offer had ultimately been denied.
Correction:
The structure I had seen next to the swimming pool was actually the foundation to the main building of the KOA campground, where souvenirs and camping supplies were sold. There was once a covered pavilion that stood nearby where people could grill out and relax after spending the afternoon swimming. Before the tornado struck, the campground was bustling with life. There were RVs and small cottages lining up and down the road. There were two swimming pools, a playground, an area where people went swimming and canoeing, walking trails, flower gardens, live music, and outdoor games. It was a popular spot for bikers who were traveling on the Cherohala Skyway.

KOA Camping with my hammock, Had a great lunch at Nut-N-Fancy at the start of the Cherohala Skyway in Tellico Plains, TN.
It started to pro down raining as soon as I started on the Cherohala Skyway. It rained off and on all day. Had a great day despite the rain.
