Food Day 2011 at St. Mary Organic Farm in Monroe, Michigan
More than 250 people joined us here in the garden Oct. 23 along with thousands of participants around the country to celebrate the first National Food Day. SMOF hosted several organizations for this event, which featured a beautiful Percheron draft horse named Dharma tilling an area in our garden.
Other activities included food preservation, composting, playing with giant bubbles and corn kernels, a food drive for the hungry, making take-home scarecrows, and learning about nutrition, honeybees, bat houses, plants, fruit trees and food justice.
Food Day is intended to generate recognition for real food and the challenges we face regarding the food we produce and eat. Food Day aims to promote safe and healthy foods, support sustainable farms and promote access to healthy food for all.

Washington Grown Season 6 Episode 5 Flowers
Eating flowers! We went there with this episode of Washington Grown! We'll visit Marmite and make not one but TWO dishes that incorporate flowers. And we'll visit Trinity Lavender Farm in George where we will see how they propagate, grow, distill, and use lavender from their farm. We'll also speak with the Washington State Department of Agriculture and how they inspect nurseries to protect both consumers and the plant industry from pests and diseases. And where do buyers get the freshest flowers? Short of going to the farm, the Seattle Wholesale Growers Market is the best place in Seattle - and is a farmer-owned coop to boot!
