Celebrating 50 Years on the Bay - Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum 1965-2015
The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class museum, and the only museum in the world dedicated to offering an authentic experience of exploring the history, environment, and people of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Museum was established in 1965, beginning in the historic Higgins, Dodson, and Eagle Houses along St. Michaels’ harbor, which now serve as the Museum’s administrative buildings. Since then, CBMM has expanded to over 18 waterfront acres and 12 exhibition buildings, including the historic 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse and Small Boat Shed. The Museum also exhibits and maintains the largest collection of Chesapeake Bay watercraft in the world. More information online at cbmm.org

Situated on 18 waterfront acres in the historic town of St. Michaels, Maryland, the Museum offers exhibits, demonstrations, boat rides on the Miles River, and annual festivals that celebrate Chesapeake Bay culture, boats, seafood, and history.
The Museum’s floating fleet of historic Chesapeake Bay watercraft is the largest in existence and its small boat collection includes crabbing skiffs, workboats, and log canoes. The Museum’s working boatyard highlights restoration of the Bay’s traditional vessels. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a fully accredited member of the American Association of Museums.

The 38' Dory Boat was built in 1931 by Francis Raymond Peg Leg Hayden along the Potomac River at Banks O'Dee, MD. Potomac River Dories were built in Southern Maryland on the Potomac River and used primarily for oyster tonging. These boats are the descendants of the Black Nancy, a type of small (18 to 27') and narrow Potomac River workboat dating to before the Civil War.
Once the painting is completed and the engine installed, the Dory Boat will rejoin CBMM's floating fleet of historic Chesapeake Bay vessels, with her relaunch along the Miles River in St. Michaels anticipated in April, 2-14. Visit cbmm.org for more information or visit the boatyard in person!

On May 23, 2015 the 18-acre waterfront campus of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum kicked off a year-long 50th anniversary celebration with Party on the Point: Celebrating 50 Years on the Bay. The festival featured the opening of a new exhibition, A Broad Reach: 50 Years of Collecting, plus boat rides, live music, Rosie’s Tavern, regional foods, family activities, craft vendors, and more.

Time-Lapse of Traditional Marine Railway Restoration Project, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
The Traditional Marine Railway Restoration Project was completed on August 11, 2014 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland. Funding and installation was provided by Chesapeake Shipbuilding with matching funds from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority Grant Program.
After years of hard service, the metal carriages on CBMM's marine railway needed to be replaced. The carriages haul historic wooden vessels out of the water to be maintained and preserved by Museum shipwrights and apprentices.
