Sunrise in ALISHAN | EasyCard Fail, Bento Boxes, Belly Rubs & Kaohsiung Luck | 12 Days in Taiwan EP2
In this second episode, we hit the road and leave Taipei for the famous forests and mountains of Alishan before heading over to Taiwan's second largest city, Kaohsiung.
You never know what's going to happen when you're on the road and these few days are no exception. Just when I thought I had bought the right card for my wife, turns out it wasn't an EasyCard at all. icash2.0 didn't work on the bus we were taking up to Alishan and we learned the hard way. Once up in Alishan, we woke up ridiculously early for the sunrise and while it looked like it was going to happen, that ended up being a fail as well. Still, we had a great time hiking through the forest the reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings (Entwood or Mirkwood, take your pick). When we finally made it to Kaohsiung, we were pleasantly surprised by a city that is much less hectic and crowded than Taipei. This allowed us to freely explore places like the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and the super artsy Pier-2.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 3-4)
Alishan is renowned for high-quality high-mountain tea, and Bihushan Tourist Tea Garden is a photophile’s dream come true. The entire rounded mountain-head on which it is planted is sculpted with tight rows of Camellia sinensis, as neat as topiary, cut through with boardwalk trails. The sweeping panorama taken in from the trails or viewing platform before the open-front visitor center/restaurant is powerful. The waters of the rough river far below churn this way and that, on their short, impatient journey to the sea. Renowned Mt. Jade and Mt. Hehuan make cameos on clear days far off in the distance, as can a high slope-hugging arcade section of the gravity-defying Alishan Forest Railway. This tea-plantation mountaintop, often shrouded in cloud and mist, is a popular platform for watching Alishan’s celebrated sunrises, sunsets, and “sea of clouds” phenomenon – dense clouds roll into the abyss-like valleys like ocean tides, savored by tourists from eagle-eye vantage points.
The 3.3km Zhukeng Stream Trail has a trailhead at each end on Highway 162A, west of Ruifeng village. Formerly called the “Old Charcoal Way” – early residents used it to take charcoal off the mountain to trade – it passes over 12 bridges, each of different design. There are a number of cataracts, hikers’ grand prize the 120m-high Longgong (“Dragon Palace”) Waterfall, reached via a dead-end side trail about mid-way along the main trail. This is a “hanging valley waterfall,” and as it shoots out into space the waters do indeed seem to hang momentarily in mid-air before making their way to the bottom of the deep gorge here. Behind the lofty natural artwork is Water Curtain Cave, through which the side trail runs.
Next morning, we hit the trails right after breakfast – and stayed on them most of the day. First on our to-do list was the charming, long Green Tunnel, accessed via a short side road that begins right at sleepy Ruili village. You’re immersed in a lush forest of tall bamboo, walking along what is in fact a narrow road, not a trail. Paved and gentle-graded, this spot is also popular with local folk, who come here for their daily constitutionals.
Then we launched ourselves on the challenging, visually thrilling 2km Youth Ridge Trail at the highway-side trailhead in Ruili village, across from Ruili Elementary School. The 1,000-meter-long Haohan (“Hero”) Slope has an average grade of 60 degrees – yes, 60.
The countless bat-roost holes in the Bat Cave were formed over millions of years by river erosion. The deep grooves in the mesmerizingly striated Swallow Cliff are also erosion-etched, the softer sandstone levels wearing away faster than the harder shale.
A few kilometers further west along highway 166 is the entrance to the steep 600-meter Yuntan Waterfall boardwalk path and, just before it, Yuantan Natural Eco Park. The two-tiered cascade is 26.3m high; the terrain features alternating thick sandstone strata sandwiching thin shale layers, twisted in a wild jumble of folds and faults.
Heels 2 Wheels: Taiwan - Su Ao Cold Spring in Yilan (Ep 24)
Su Ao is a small, quaint town in Yilan County. Famous for seafood and cold springs, this rather small place doesn't seem to be frequented by western tourists. Su Ao Cold Spring has a spring water temperature of 22 °C.It is both bathable and drinkable, and has a pH of 5.5. Watch our host Joanne-Marie Sim take a dive, and a sip!

Taipei, Taiwan - 8+3 Awesome Things To See/Do
Need to book a hotel for Taipei or anywhere else? Using this link to book your hotel with Agoda will give you the same price great price and help us out with a small commission:
It's a vibrant city that is rich in culture, history, street food, and religion. Taipei, Taiwan-8+3 Awesome Things To See/Do showcases the best of what the city has to offer. It’s safe, super-friendly, convenient and probably undervalued compared to the super Asian city destinations of Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul. Ironically many residents of those cities choose Taipei as a destination, enjoying some of those qualities that their city once had or simply lacks.
Why the title 8+3 Awesome Sights To See/Do? Well most in Asia would be clued in to the significance of the number 8 and 3. In Chinese,(Mandarin), the word eight sounds similar to the word for prosper or wealth. It’s also similar sounding in Cantonese. The number 8 is an auspicious number.
The number three sounds similar to the character for birth and is also considered a lucky number. There are three stages to a person’s life-birth, marriage, and death.
So my wish is for prosperity and good luck for all those that visit Taipei, Taiwan and for the people of the city that have treated me with such great kindness and hospitality for the past 4 years. Would love to get your feedback on the video and ideas for future content. Also what other countries do you like to visit in Asia?
Thanks again with many blessings to you!

Taipei is a hidden nightlife gem in East Asia, I had no idea prior to visiting Taipei of its excellent bars and massive nightclubs. I recommend you start your evening with a few drinks, a game of jenga at ONTAP, a laid back pub where you can meet many expats and English speaking Taiwanese locals. Another great bar is FRANK Taipei on top of the ATT4Fun party building with mesmerizing views of Taipei 101.
ATT4Fun is the main location for most nightclubs and bars right across the Taipei 101 tower, so make sure to book yourself an AirBnB nearby if you do not like to move around a lot.

Taipei Unlimited Travel Pass, just $39 USD
One of the coolest events are all-you-can-drink parties at many nightclubs like Babe18, here you pay a fixed fee at the door, often around $25 USD and you'll be able to refill your cup until 4am closing time. Also, the music at many nightclubs is fantastic, lots of EDM and house DJ's.
Another great lounge is 1001 Nights where you can enjoy odd flavoured shishas and laid back atmosphere. I ordered the bizarre Banana-Gum flavour which was highly enjoyable. Make sure to check their events listings on their Facebook page.
OMNI is the largest nightclub in Taipei with a massive dancefloor, solid EDM and an incredible light system, OMNI is open until 4:30am and a great place to meet the locals. OMNI has a young crowd, bottle service, although the entrance can be expensive, this place is worth every penny.
Another great nightclub for halloween is Elektro, one of the most popular nightclubs at ATT4Fun. As you can tell from my photos, I visited Taipei during the halloween weekend. This is a compilation of my 2 trips to Taiwan, end of September and end of October.
VIBE and PONG are special nightclubs where you can play digital beer pong with friends, a date or the locals. It is a great way to socialize and interact, just download the App on your phone and have a fun beer pong match off in the middle of the nightclub.
KOR Taipei is located right next to OMNI, Kor is a great club if you are NOT into EDM. At KOR you can enjoy hiphop, R&B and rap music. Sadly, there isn't a dance floor but definitely a great place to socialize.
End your night in Taipei at Haidilao, a highend Chinese hot pot restaurant open until 4am, my Taiwanese friends took me here to experience delicious Chinese dishes, my favorite being the water lotus stems, I recommend going easy on the spicy level, it could be a painful aftermath. Alternatively, karaoke it up at Partyworld located right next to OMNI nightclub to continue your nightlife adventure and show off your singing skills in a large private karaoke room.

Con Dao Island - Ba Ria-Vung Tau province
Con Dao is 179 sea miles from Vung Tau. Looking at a map, Con Dao Island looks like a bear rising from the sea to east of the most southern point of the country. Con Dao comprises 16 islets with total area of 7,678 hectares, of which at 5,150 hectare Con Lon is the largest. The area, providing facilities for tourists, is now a national park with beaches, crystal waters, and coconut groves.
Con Dao Island is also famous for its nice beaches shaded with evergreen trees, fresh air, clear blue waters, and primitive forests.
Côn Đảo National Park is working with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Vietnam to further protection in the marine areas, with programs to establish a Marine Protected Area that protects coral reefs, seagrass beds and species, while also developing sustainable nature-based ecotourism. The island's management is strongly geared towards sustainable use, hoping to learn from previous experiences in Vietnam and the region to balance development with conservation.

Taiwan High Speed Rail
Taiwan High Speed Rail is a high-speed rail line that runs approximately 345 km) along the west coast of Taiwan, from the national capital Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung. With construction managed by a private company, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation, which also operates the line, the total cost of the project was US$18 billion. At the time it was built, this was one of the world's largest privately funded rail construction schemes. The system is based primarily on Japan's Shinkansen technology.
The line opened for service on 5 January 2007, with trains running at a top speed of 300 km/h from Taipei to Zuoying in as little as 96 minutes, reaching almost 90% of Taiwan's population. Most intermediate stations on the line lie outside the cities served; however, a variety of transfer options, such as free shuttle buses, conventional rail, and metros have been constructed to facilitate transport connections.

Son of Man Communal Village, Sanyi District, Miaoli County, Taiwan
The Coolidge family spent a wonderful 3 days/2 nights at the Son of Man Communal Village in Sanyi District of Miaoli County, Taiwan. This is not a normal village or farm. This is a center for communal living, where different families live together and raise their children by home schooling them and giving them a life full of purpose, experiences, and activities. During our time with this friendly community, we enjoyed generous hospitality, kindness and positive energy. Our kids were taught many skills and given various tasks around the farm. They have many opportunities to learn and play, and made new friends quickly. Every night, everyone spent time talking, expressing themselves, and enjoying meaningful conversations.
I met someone from Hong Kong, who said he was visiting for the first time. He said he was there to find his purpose in life.
My kids were very happy, and my youngest didn't want to leave. They all want to come back. My dog lived freely there, without a leash, and was given constant love and attention.
It was one of the most memorable weekends we have had as a family, and we recommend this experience to anyone who wants a new, alternative, wholesome experience, or a lifestyle that can inspire one to find their purpose in life.

I was so glad to see the Taoyuan International Airport MRT line open earlier this year. This finally brings Taipei in line as far as convenience and access goes, to it’s international airport, with other major cities in East Asia including Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Southeast Asian centers like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Like most airport trains across Asia they do not operate 24 hours a day so if your flight arrives outside of the 6am to 23:00 train schedule then you’ll have to use a bus, still fairly convenient or catch a taxi.
At NT$160 for a one way ticket the Taoyuan Airport MRT is the bargain of East Asia for airport rail fares.
As I mentioned in the video Taipei Metro offers a number of unlimited passes ranging from 24 hours to 72 hours. These passes are not valid for the airport MRT. If you’d like an unlimited pass that includes a return trip on the airport MRT then purchase the “Joint Ticket” at the airport MRT counter.
At the airport and at Taipei Main Station you can purchase an Easy Card or iPass which you can load up and use on the airport MRT, Taipei Metro, many bus lines and convenience stores.
This video should cover most of your questions regarding travel between the international airport and Taipei Main Station. For more information visit their website:

Dong Thap

*SORRY ABOUT THE MICROPHONE ISSUE, THIS IS THE LAST VIDEO WITH THIS PROBLEM!
Today we visited the Gianyar Night Market near Ubud in Bali! Its our first time in Bali and we absolutely fell in love with the Indonesian street food scene here! We only made 1 food video in Bali but we have a 3 part series coming up next of the BEST street food in Jakarta!
Pasar Umum Gianyar is a small but bustling market packed with AMAZING Indonesian street food! Gianyar is only a 20 minute scooter ride from Ubud and totally worth the trip to try some of the famous street food dishes such as, Babi Guling, Ayam Bututu and Sate Lillit!
We are SO happy to be in Indonesia and loved our time in Bali! Next up JAKARTA! Sorry again about the microphone issues!
