CHICAGO ARCHITECTURAL BOAT TOUR - CHICAGO'S FIRST LADY RIVER CRUISE (4K - 2019)
Enjoy the Chicago Architectural boat tour and ride on Chicago's First Lady River Cruise, which is the number one Chicago boat tour.
Riding along the Chicago River offers individuals a chance to see great Chicago Architecture and it is up to you to decide what Chicago Architecture Tour you want to go on. We highly recommend any Chicago First Lady boat tour based on our experience as they are led by highly trained river cruise docents.
On our Chicago Architecture boat tour, we had a very nice lady named Barb who we could tell had a deep passion for Chicago Architecture as she demonstrated excellent storytelling discussing the history of Chicago's buildings, famous Chicago Architects (Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, and many more), and other places for tourists to visit in Chicago beyond a Chicago Boat Tour.
Along the Chicago First Lady Architecture Tour we passed along many buildings and bridges.

Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871-1934, by Thomas Leslie
For more than a century, Chicago's skyline has included some of the world's most distinctive and inspiring buildings. This history of the Windy City's skyscrapers begins in the key period of reconstruction after the Great Fire of 1871 and concludes in 1934 with the onset of the Great Depression, which brought architectural progress to a standstill. During this time, such iconic landmarks as the Chicago Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building, the Marshall Field and Company Building, the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Palmolive Building, and many others rose to impressive new heights, thanks to innovations in building methods and materials. Solid, earthbound edifices of iron, brick, and stone made way for towers of steel and plate glass, imparting a striking new look to Chicago's growing urban landscape.
Thomas Leslie reveals the daily struggles, technical breakthroughs, and negotiations that produced these magnificent buildings. The book includes detailed analyses of how foundation materials, framing structures, and electric lighting developed throughout the years, showing how the skeletal frames of the Rookery, Ludington, and Leiter Buildings led to the braced frames of the Masonic Temple and Schiller Building and eventually to the concealed frames of the City Opera, Merchandise Mart, and other Chicago landmarks. Leslie also considers how the city's infamous political climate contributed to its architecture, as building and zoning codes were often disputed by shifting networks of rivals, labor unions, professional organizations, and municipal bodies.
Featuring more than a hundred photographs and illustrations of the city's physically impressive and beautifully diverse architecture, Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871--1934 shows how during these decades, Chicago's architects, engineers, and builders learned from one another's successes and failures to create an exceptionally dynamic, energetic period of architectural progress.
Thomas Leslie, AIA, is the Pickard Chilton Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University.

Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Chicago, on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S. Famed for its bold architecture, it has a skyline punctuated by skyscrapers such as the iconic John Hancock Center, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. The city is also renowned for its museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago with its noted Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.
Steely skyscrapers, top chefs, rocking festivals – the Windy City will blow you away with its low-key cultured awesomeness. It's hard to know what to gawp at first. High-flying architecture is everywhere, from the stratospheric, glass-floored Willis Tower to Frank Gehry's swooping silver Pritzker Pavilion to Frank Lloyd Wright's stained-glass Robie House. Whimsical public art studs the streets; you might be walking along and wham, there's an abstract Picasso statue that's not only cool to look at, but you're allowed to go right up and climb on it. For art museums, take your pick: impressionist masterpieces at the massive Art Institute, psychedelic paintings at the mid-sized Museum of Mexican Art or outsider drawings at the small Intuit gallery.
Loosen your belt – you've got a lot of eating to do. On the menu: peanut-butter-and-banana-topped waffles for breakfast (at Stephanie Izard's Little Goat), a chicken, apple and cranberry hot dog for lunch (at Hot G Dog), and 20 courses of centrifuged, encapsulated molecular gastronomy for dinner (at Grant Achatz' Alinea). You can also chow down on a superb range of ethnic eats from Vietnamese pho to Mexican carnitas, Polish pierogi and Macanese fat rice. Still hungry? Order a late-night deep-dish pizza.
Chicago is a maniacal sports town, with a pro team for every season (two teams, in baseball's case). Watching a game is a local rite of passage, whether you slather on the blue-and-orange body paint for a Bears football game, join the raucous baseball crowd in Wrigley Field's bleachers, or plop down on a bar stool at the neighborhood tavern for whatever match is on TV. Count on making lots of spirited new friends. Should the excitement rub off and inspire you to get active yourself, the city's 26 beaches and 580 parks offer a huge array of play options.
Chicago knows how to rock a festival. Between March and September it throws around 200 shindigs. The specialty is music. Blues Fest brings half a million people to Millennium Park to hear guitar notes slide and bass lines roll, all for free. During the four-day Lollapalooza mega-party, rock bands thrash while the audience dances in an arm-flailing frenzy. Smaller, barbecue-scented street fests take place in the neighborhoods each weekend – though some rival downtown for star power on their stages (oh, hey, Olivia Newton-John at Northalsted Market Days).

We Built this City: Chicago
We Built This City traces the Irish involvement in building Chicago, from the famous I&M canal to the rise of the Irish culturally and politically. A generation of Irish architects came to study under Mies van der Rohe at IIT in the fifties and sixties and this has inspired Irish architects working internationally today. The film is presented by Clare Lyster, Associate Professor at UIC School of Architecture, who is a writer and urbanist based in Chicago.
We Built this City is a Dyehouse Films production, directed by Bonnie Dempsey and edited by David O'Sullivan. The film was screened as an introduction to a panel discussion about the contribution Irish people have made to the built and cultural fabric of Chicago, from historic to contemporary times, which took place at the Arts Club of Chicago on November 10th 2015. For more information, please see architecturefoundation.ie/activities/we-built-this-city-chicago/.
We Built this City is curated by Nathalie Weadick, Director of the Irish Architecture Foundation, assisted by Rachel Gallagher and is in collaboration with Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) and the Office of the Minister for Diaspora Affairs of Ireland. ID2015 is an initiative backed by the Irish Government celebrating and promoting Irish design in Ireland and internationally.
