The history of candy in Chicago is long, sweet and full of amazing stories! Some of the largest confectionary manufactures were based in Chicago and countless iconic candies were created there. Although, Chicago was't always the Candy Capital of America, it took hard work, innovation and a lot of luck to achieve that title.
In this documentary we look at the very beginnings of candy making in Chicago, right up to the large mergers and acquisitions of the 20th and 21st century and the current confectionary trends.

Bertha will whisk you back in time to May 1, 1893, when the Chicago World’s Fair opened in Jackson Park. Nearly 27 million people came to the fairgrounds to experience a showcase of more than 65,000 exhibits, including everything from advanced technology, plants, art, entertainment and – most importantly – food! Try several of the city’s debut favorites while “Chicago’s Gold Coast Queen,” Bertha Palmer, entertains you with her favorite delicious memories of the great 1893 Columbian Exposition.

The Century Room located within the Berghoff is the perfect setting for the 1893 World’s Fair Food Tour, and you’ll see why once you arrive. Savor one of Herman Berghoff’s fair favorites.
Chicago Kernel
A fair favorite popcorn snack will be served in this underground network of walkways. This delicious treat is handmade specifically for Tastebud Food Tours.
The Pittsfield Building
Enjoy a frankfurter (but NOT any ordinary frankfurter), which debuted at the fair, in this Spanish Gothic Revival building with its trademark interior lobby and atrium, surrounded by balconies and shop windows on all sides.

Back in August 2019, I was still on my 2019 summer tour in Chicago, Illinois for two food challenges. For challenge #1, I traveled to JoJo's Milk Bar in downtown Chicago, Illinois and took on JoJo's Sweet 16 Chicago Burger, Waffle Fries, and Milkshake Challenge. There was a quadruple-patty burger (16oz) served with 16oz of waffle fries topped with cheese, bacon, and sour cream sauce, along with a 23oz Chicago beer and one of JoJo's 16oz signature milkshakes. BIG thanks to JoJo's Milk Bar's ownership, marketing team, and staff for the wonderful food and hospitality, and to all the many people who came up to watch and meet me that August evening. We appreciate everyone around Chicago and the state of Illinois watching and supporting our efforts!!

JoJo’s Milk Bar’s “Sweet 16” Chicago Burger, Fries, and Milkshake Challenge ($50):
– There is a 16 oz burger made up of four 4 oz beef patties plus cheese and toppings.
– There are 16 oz of waffle fries loaded with cheese, sour cream sauce, and bacon.
– There is a 23 oz beer of your choice plus one of their 16 oz signature milkshakes.
– Each milkshake choice they have includes a big cookie, some fruit, and more.
