Scientists measure extent of Asian carp invasion in US rivers
(13 Jul 2012) STORYLINE:
River ecologists in the US have taken to their boats to attempt to settle the debate about the impact of Asian carp.
Some scientists have predicted that the fish - an invasive species introduced 30 years ago to control plankton and algae in Arkansas fish farms and sewage lagoons - could decimate native fish stocks in the Great Lakes.
Others contend that the Lakes waters would be too cold and anyway food supplies could support both populations.
But research shows that the carp which escaped into the Mississippi river system when fish farms were flooded, now make up more than 60 percent of the combined weight of all fish species in some stretches of river.
And they're eating their way northwards, consuming up to one-fifth of their body weight in a day.
Already they're established in more than two dozen states, as far as Kansas and the Dakotas, and within 55 miles (88 kilometres) of Lake Michigan.
What's missing, though, is clear evidence that Asian carp will devastate other fish. Even in places such as the Illinois and Mississippi, where carp are rampant, changes have been incremental.
Many experts say if the hardy fish establish a foothold in the Great Lakes, they're likely to find hospitable conditions in bays, nearshore areas and tributary rivers. Warm, shallow Lake Erie, with the most abundant fish numbers, is an especially ripe target.
They are knocking on the door of the Great Lakes, through the Chicago Sanitary Shipping Canal, said Levi Solomon, ecologist at Havana Biological Station, Illinois.
The main prevention measure is an electric barrier on the Upper Illinois river that prevents fish from moving through but several states are demanding more substantial measures from the federal government, with court action pending.
While years of study have turned up ominous signs that the carp are capable of crowding out other species and changing ecosystems, the worst-case scenario which some scientists predict has not yet happened.
Research so far has focused on rivers, where Asian carp are most plentiful, counting the fish stunned by an electric current, which can cause a spectacular display of jumping fish.
Big money is at stake. The fish could supplant river species widely harvested for food. And the Great Lakes leisure angling industry is said to be worth seven billion US dollars a year.
Government agencies have already spent more than 150 (m) million dollars on technology to repel the invaders and five states are suing the federal government to blockade the Chicago Ship canal, which would take years and cost (b) billions.
A US-Canadian team is expected soon to release a Great Lakes risk analysis following an 18-month study.
Calculating damage from Asian carp is slow and often frustrating work, thanks in part to the ever-changing nature of rivers.
Fluctuating water levels, nutrient runoff and temperatures also affect fish numbers.
Some scientists say that predictions about the damage carp can do may be premature, which makes the current research critical.
It likely will influence how the debate over managing waterways said to be at risk is played out in Congress and the courts.

Oldest footage of Chicago ever
Chicago, this is the most awesome thing you will see today! Amazing collection of the earliest motion pictures made in Chicago from 1896-1935.
The film features places such as the stockyards and Michigan Avenue as far back as 1896. It also shows early 20th century clips of Theodore Roosevelt, Al Capone and recently discovered footage of the SS Eastland disaster on the Chicago River in 1915.
There are clips of the Cubs, the Chicago Maroons and Lake Michigan covered in ice.
In addition, the video shows dates and maps showing precisely where the camera was placed.
The producers believe they have also identified the previously unknown location of the oldest surviving footage of the Chicago - a short clip of a police parade in front of a now-demolished building in 1896.
The film was taken outside the Battery D building which stood on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Monroe Street.
The film's soundtrack features Chicago-style rhythm, blues and jazz, as well as one of the oldest surviving audio recordings made in the city from 1893.

Places to see in ( Chicago - USA ) Museum of Science and Industry
The Museum of Science and Industry is located in Chicago, Illinois, in Jackson Park, in the Hyde Park neighborhood between Lake Michigan and The University of Chicago. It is housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Initially endowed by Julius Rosenwald, the Sears, Roebuck and Company president and philanthropist, it was supported by the Commercial Club of Chicago and opened in 1933 during the Century of Progress Exposition.
Among the museum's exhibits are a full-size replica coal mine, German submarine U-505 captured during World War II, a 3,500-square-foot (330 m2) model railroad, the command module of Apollo 8, and the first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel passenger train (Pioneer Zephyr). David R. Mosena has been president and CEO of the museum since 1998.
The museum has over 2,000 exhibits, displayed in 75 major halls. The museum has several major permanent exhibits. Access to several of the exhibits (including the Coal Mine and U-505) requires the payment of an additional fee. The Transportation Zone contains several permanent exhibits. The Great Train Story is a 3,500-square-foot (330 m2) model railroad and recounts the story of transportation from Chicago to Seattle.
In March 2010, the museum opened Science Storms in the Allstate Court, as a permanent exhibit. This multilevel exhibit features a 40-foot (12 m) water vapor tornado, tsunami tank, Tesla coil, heliostat system, and a Wimshurst machine built by James Wimshurst in the late 19th century. Also housed are Newton's Cradle, the color spectrum, and Foucault pendulum. All artifacts allow guests to explore the physics and chemistry of the natural world.
German submarine U-505 is one of just two German submarines captured during World War II, and, since its arrival in 1954, the only one on display in the Western Hemisphere, as well as the only one in the United States. The U-boat was newly restored beginning in 2004 after 50 years of being displayed outdoors, and was then moved indoors as The New U-505 Experience on June 5, 2005. Displayed in a underground shed, it remains as a popular exhibit for visitors, as well as a memorial to all the casualties of the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.
The first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel train, the Pioneer Zephyr, is on permanent display in the Great Hall, renamed the Entry Hall in 2008. The train was once displayed outdoors, and restored and placed in the former Great Hall during the construction of the museum's underground parking lot. Today, a complimentary tour goes through it every 10–20 minutes.

** A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALLIED RADIO & ELECTRONICS **
In 1928, Allied Radio (now known as Allied Electronics) was started in Chicago, IL.
In 1932, Allied was selling electronic parts by catalog. Storefront sales operations were established with the goal of selling to amateur radio operators and electronics experimenters. The company built a growing business in marketing radio parts and kits to home hobbyists, and was one of the first to sell electronics through a catalog. In addition, Allied opened storefront distribution outlets to reach more amateur ham radio operators and experimenters. During this time, Allied moved to 833 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL.
From 1941-45, having survived the depression, Allied focused on the war effort, primarily servicing government contracts and high-priority industrial orders. During WWII, Allied devoted itself to the war effort by handling government contracts and high-priority industrial needs. This was Allied's first real experience in industrial electronics. After the war, Allied continued to sell to the consumer and industrial markets.
From 1946-60, the electronics industry exploded as new developments in electronics were adopted on a widespread basis in commerce and industry. Innovations such as television, industrial automation, space technology and defense accelerated the need for electronics. Consumer demand also grew as radio sets and components not available during the war proliferated. Allied's main competitors were Radio Shack, Lafayette Radio, Olson Electronics, Newark Electronics, Burstein-Applebee Co., and local independent dealers (such as WinterRadio). Allied's primary house brands included Allied, Knight, and Knight-Kit.
In 1953, Allied Radio Corporation moves into its new, 2 million dollar building at 100 N. Western Ave, Chicago, IL. This ultra-modern facility was designed by experts to give their customers the best service in the industry.
In 1961, Allied Radio Corporation established Allied Electronics Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary to assume industrial sales of its small electronic components, relays, semi-conductors and the like which accounted for more than one-third of Allied's $40 million annual sales.
In 1962, the first industrial catalog for Allied Electronics, a subsidiary of Allied Radio, was released. The company continued to serve both amateur and professional ham radio operators as one of the few places to locate that hard to get piece of radio equipment.
In 1970, Allied moved its headquarters from Chicago, Illinois to Fort Worth, Texas because 1970 marked the year when Radio Shack's parent company, the Tandy Corporation (now Radio Shack Corporation) , purchased Allied Electronics and Allied Radio.
In 1970, Tandy introduced combined catalogs of Allied Radio Shack stereo equipment, computers, phones, CB radios, scanners, speakers, antennas, P.A. systems, walkie-talkies, radios, electronic components, test equipment, electronic kits, & more.
In 1972, the catalog is now a treasure trove for persons tracking down old components when trying to restore old professional and industrial equipment. Essex/Stancor, UTC, Switchcraft, Dialco, Arrow-Hart, Sprague, Fairchild, Robertshaw, Centralab, Belden, Sigma, Magnecraft, C. P. Clare, Amphenol, Shure, Electro-Voice, Sola, Simpson, Superior Electric, Hurst, RCA, Elmenco, ADC, H. H. Smith, are only some of the brand names represented. Interspersed with the major pro names were Micronta, Realistic, and other Radio Shack consumer level house brands.
In 1973, due directly to federal court action, Tandy was ordered to divest itself of Allied Radio.
In 1995, Allied is the first electronics distribution company to come out with a CD-ROM catalog and quickly followed-up by entering the e-commerce arena with the launch of a web site. Allied's main competitors were Radio Shack, Newark Electronics, Digi-Key, Jameco, and Mouser Electronics.
Today, Allied Electronics is a small order, high service level distributor of electronic components and electromechanical products with over 50 sales offices across the United States and in Canada.

Early on the morning of July 24, 1915, the lake steamer Eastland cast off from its morning along the Chicago River. On board 2,572 excited Western Electric Company employees and their families.
It was to have been a pleasant Lake Michigan cruise and picnic, instead it turned into Chicago's worst single disaster.

La Plata, MO, in Northern Missouri, is located on BNSF Railway's Marceline Subdivision at milepost 312.7, part of their Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passenger train stops here twice a day; the eastbound train #4 in the morning and the westbound train #3 in the evening.
The typical BNSF freight train volume is between 50 and 70 trains per 24 hours. There are 2 cameras available.
There is an ATCS layout available, as well as a radio feed for the western part of the BNSF Marceline Sub, listening to AAR road channel 30, 160.560 (also includes Norfolk Southern's Kansas City District, on road channel 22, 160.440):

** A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALLIED RADIO & ELECTRONICS CORPORATION **
In 1928, Allied Radio (now known as Allied Electronics) was started in Chicago, IL.
In 1932, Allied was selling electronic parts by catalog. Storefront sales operations were established with the goal of selling to amateur radio operators and electronics experimenters. The company built a growing business in marketing radio parts and kits to home hobbyists, and was one of the first to sell electronics through a catalog. In addition, Allied opened storefront distribution outlets to reach more amateur ham radio operators and experimenters. During this time, Allied moved to 833 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL.
From 1941-45, having survived the depression, Allied focused on the war effort, primarily servicing government contracts and high-priority industrial orders. During WWII, Allied devoted itself to the war effort by handling government contracts and high-priority industrial needs. This was Allied's first real experience in industrial electronics. After the war, Allied continued to sell to the consumer and industrial markets.
From 1946-60, the electronics industry exploded as new developments in electronics were adopted on a widespread basis in commerce and industry. Innovations such as television, industrial automation, space technology and defense accelerated the need for electronics. Consumer demand also grew as radio sets and components not available during the war proliferated. Allied's main competitors were Radio Shack, Lafayette Radio, Olson Electronics, Newark Electronics, Burstein-Applebee Co., and local independent dealers (such as WinterRadio). Allied's primary house brands included Allied, Knight, and Knight-Kit.
In 1953, Allied Radio Corporation moves into its new, 2 million dollar building at 100 N. Western Ave, Chicago, IL. This ultra-modern facility was designed by experts to give their customers the best service in the industry.
In 1961, Allied Radio Corporation established Allied Electronics Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary to assume industrial sales of its small electronic components, relays, semi-conductors and the like which accounted for more than one-third of Allied's $40 million annual sales.
In 1962, the first industrial catalog for Allied Electronics, a subsidiary of Allied Radio, was released. The company continued to serve both amateur and professional ham radio operators as one of the few places to locate that hard to get piece of radio equipment.
In 1970, Allied moved its headquarters from Chicago, Illinois to Fort Worth, Texas because 1970 marked the year when Radio Shack's parent company, the Tandy Corporation (now Radio Shack Corporation) , purchased Allied Electronics and Allied Radio.
In 1970, Tandy introduced combined catalogs of Allied Radio Shack stereo equipment, computers, phones, CB radios, scanners, speakers, antennas, P.A. systems, walkie-talkies, radios, electronic components, test equipment, electronic kits, & more.
In 1972, the catalog is now a treasure trove for persons tracking down old components when trying to restore old professional and industrial equipment. Essex/Stancor, UTC, Switchcraft, Dialco, Arrow-Hart, Sprague, Fairchild, Robertshaw, Centralab, Belden, Sigma, Magnecraft, C. P. Clare, Amphenol, Shure, Electro-Voice, Sola, Simpson, Superior Electric, Hurst, RCA, Elmenco, ADC, H. H. Smith, are only some of the brand names represented. Interspersed with the major pro names were Micronta, Realistic, and other Radio Shack consumer level house brands.
In 1973, due directly to federal court action, Tandy was ordered to divest itself of Allied Radio.
In 1995, Allied is the first electronics distribution company to come out with a CD-ROM catalog and quickly followed-up by entering the e-commerce arena with the launch of a web site. Allied's main competitors were Radio Shack, Newark Electronics, Digi-Key, Jameco, and Mouser Electronics.
Today, Allied Electronics is a small order, high service level distributor of electronic components and electromechanical products with over 50 sales offices across the United States and in Canada.
