New Chinatown Library Branch
On August 29, 2015, Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon, 25th Ward Alderman Danny Solis and members of the Chinatown community to celebrate the opening of the new Chinatown Library Branch. The new 16,370-square-foot, two story branch is nearly 6,000 square feet larger than the previous rental facility. Serving as a cultural and information center for not only Chinatown and Chicago residents, but for tourists and other visitors to the area, the Chinatown Branch has consistently been the busiest branch in the Chicago Public Library system, serving approximately 21,000 patrons a month.
The library has a large central space for community gathering and a large, a glass-enclosed community room for events and programs and two meeting rooms for small group work. It features a large reading room, a YOUmedia digital media space for teens, an expanded community room, children's reading room, meeting space for community use, state of the art technology, Wi-Fi, and self-check out stations.

The Harold Washington Library Center is the central library for the Chicago Public Library System. It is located just south of the Loop 'L', at 400 S. State Street in Chicago, in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is a full-service library and ADA compliant. As with all libraries in the Chicago Public Library system, it has free wifi internet service. The building contains approximately 756,000 square feet (70,200 m2) of space. The total square footage is approximately 972,000 square feet (90,300 m2) including the rooftop garden penthouse, according to the Zoning department of the city of Chicago.
With the conversion of Chicago's former central library into the Chicago Cultural Center in 1977, a long-term temporary central library was opened in the Mandel Building at 425 North Michigan Avenue and much of the library's collection was put into storage. A debate on a new central library ensued and continued throughout most of the 1980s, frustrated by a lack of funding. Upon his election in 1983, Mayor Harold Washington supported the construction of a new central library. After the turmoil of four mayoral administrations in a seven-year period, finally, in 1986 during Washington's tenure, the city and the Library Board picked a location and floated a $175 million bond issue to provide funds for the new building, as well as the entire citywide library branch system.
All public doors lead to the lobby. The north public entrance on Van Buren is just east of the CTA's Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren station, served by the Brown, Orange, Pink and Purple Lines. The corridor goes east, then south, then west, and opens south to the lobby.
The east and south public entrances open directly to the lobby. The west public entrance opens to the offices. The west corridor goes east then south to open at the lobby.
The lower level houses the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium, Multi-Purpose Room and Exhibit Hall.
The central lobby is two stories tall and includes both the circulation and information desks. On the east side, the Popular Library is housed and on the West side there is a YouMedia space for teens.
The second floor houses the Thomas Hughes Children’s library.
The third floor includes computers for public use, periodicals, interlibrary loan and general information services departments along with a library makerspace. The Maker Lab includes multiple 3d printers, CNC machines and Laser Cutters. Use of these machines is available for a nominal fee.
The fourth floor holds the business, general sciences, and technology items.
The fifth floor holds government publications, Chicago municipal references, maps, and center for the blind, visually impaired and physically disabled.
The sixth floor holds social sciences and history resources.
The seventh floor holds literature and language resources as well as a work by acclaimed Polish sculptor Jerzy Kenar.
The eighth floor holds visual and performing arts resources, music practice rooms, and audio/visual rooms.
The ninth floor holds the winter garden, which may serve as a reading room, or be rented for social functions, also on this floor are exhibit halls, Special Collections, and the Harold Washington Archives and Collections.
The tenth floor is not open to the public. It houses library offices and technical services.

Tour of Chicago's Historic Chinatown
Looking to escape the anti-Chinese violence that had broken out on the west coast, the first Chinese arrived in Chicago after 1869 when the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed. Centered on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, Chicago's Chinatown neighborhood is on the South Side (located in the Armour Square community area). Chicago is the second oldest settlement of Chinese in America after the Chinese fled persecution in California. The present Chicago Chinatown formed about 1915, after settlers moved steadily south from near the Loop where the first enclaves were established in the 19th century. Chicago's Chinatown is home to a many Chinese restaurants, gift shops, grocery stores, Chinese medicine stores, as well as a number of services that cater to people interested in Chinese culture, including those speaking varieties of Chinese, especially Cantonese.

Light of Unity Festival: Music Concert
The Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra and the Baha'i House of Worship Choir unite for a special musical performance: Light of Unity Concert, in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of the Founder of the Baha'i Faith.

ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA
The Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra is a free-lance professional ensemble under the umbrella of American Music Festivals. Performing for over 25 years, it has appeared at diverse venues including the Harris Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, Copernicus Center, North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Educational Center, American Islamic College, Chicago Public Library Chinatown Branch, and throughout the Lincolnwood community.
American Music Festivals is a nonprofit promoting cultural exchange and American music. Its collaborative concerts bring people together, allowing ensembles to share their talents with diverse audiences. From the world's major stages to community events directed at outreach and education, American Music Festivals inclusive programs are often accompanied by humanitarian efforts and international goodwill. They highlight repertoire and artists representative of American heritage alongside other classical and folk traditions.
Philip Simmons is Artistic Director of American Music Festivals, Founder and Music Director of the Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra, and Resident Conductor of the Orchestra of the Hawaiian Islands. He has conducted in twenty one countries, performing in the Great Halls of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and Saint Petersburg Philharmonia, the Musikverein, Carnegie Hall, and Chicago’s Symphony Center. A former North Shore resident, he served as Chair of the Wilmette Fine Arts Commission.
ABOUT THE CHOIR
The multi-cultural repertoire of the Baha'i House of Worship Choir reflects the Bahá'í belief in the unity of humanity and includes classical choral works, contemporary choral compositions with lyrics from the Bahá'í Scriptures or other Sacred Writings, Bahá’í Gospel which are Bahá’í writings sung in Gospel style, Negro spirituals, and selections chanted in Persian or Arabic, the original languages of the Bahá’í Faith.
Van Gilmer, renowned vocal soloist, choral director and Gospel composer, serves as Music Director at the Bahá'í House of Worship. Gilmer revels in assembling choirs to sing scripture of the world’s religions celebrating God and inspiring audiences with rich, heavenly harmonies that reach the heart and soul. Gospel literally means “good news,” and Gilmer loves sharing the “good news” music of the Bahá'í Faith with the world.
In addition to singing regularly from the loft in the Baha'i Temple, the choir performs in diverse venues in Chicago's North Shore.

Obama Library Coming to Chicago's Jackson Park
(28 Jul 2016) A person familiar with the selection process says an exact location for President Barack Obama's presidential library has been chosen.
The individual tells The Associated Press that Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have selected Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side for the library and presidential center.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the individual wasn't authorized to discuss the choice before a formal announcement.
Jackson Park is near the University of Chicago, where Obama once taught constitutional law. The library is expected to be a boon to nearby communities struggling with gang violence and unemployment.
The park was selected over nearby Washington Park. Both locations were proposed by the university.

Chinatown Square outdoor mall has similar attractions. The Chinese-American Museum has exhibits about the history of the neighborhood. The Nine-Dragon Wall is a reproduction of the 15th-century mural of the same name in Beijing.
The Chinatown neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, is on the South Side (located in the Armour Square community area), centered on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, and is an example of an American Chinatown, or ethnic-Chinese neighborhood. By the 2000 Census, Chicago Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area had 68,021 Chinese. The combined 60616 and 60608 zip codes in Chicago, as of the 2010 Census, were home to 22,380 people of Chinese descent. In addition, as of 2010, the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville IL-IN-WI metro area had 92,712 people of Chinese descent. Chicago is the second oldest settlement of Chinese in America after the Chinese fled persecution in California.

Exploring the legacy of Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes with Open Mike Eagle
Open Mike Eagle’s new album, Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, is heavily influenced by the legacy of the Robert Taylor Homes, a former public housing project on the South Side of Chicago, which was unceremoniously torn down in 2007. (Today, all that remains at the site is a barren field.) Mike grew up in Chicago and often spent time with family living in the Homes. Upon revisiting the city and the former site of the Homes later in life, he was struck by the lack of commemoration for the thousands of residents who lived and died in the Homes. The realization that nothing remained in that space inspired the theme of the album.
For the inaugural episode of AV Docs, The A.V. Club spent a day with Open Mike Eagle at the site of the former Homes in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, exploring its legacy to understand the inspiration behind his new album.
