Places to see in ( Chicago - USA ) Chicago Shakespeare Theater
Chicago Shakespeare Theater is a non-profit, professional theater company located at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois. Its more than six hundred annual performances performed 48 weeks of the year include its critically acclaimed Shakespeare series, its World's Stage touring productions, and youth and family oriented programming concentrated in the summer. The theater had garnered 77 Joseph Jefferson awards and three Laurence Olivier Awards. In 2008, it was the winner of the Regional Theatre Tony Award.
The company's present artistic director Barbara Gaines founded the theater in 1986, when it began performances on the roof of the Red Lion Pub in the city's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1999, the company received permission to build its permanent home: a two-venue facility at Navy Pier. Productions at the theater include works from the Shakespearean canon as well as other plays and musicals. In addition to its own original productions, the Chicago Shakespare Theater also hosts touring productions from other theater companies. Chicago Shakespeare Theater is part of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America (STAA) and National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
Chicago Shakespeare Theater was founded as the Chicago Shakespeare Workshop by current Artistic Director Barbara Gaines in 1986, a name which was changed a year later to the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory and finally in 1999 to Chicago Shakespeare Theater. It performed its first twelve seasons in residency at the Ruth Page Theater, where it performed titles ranging from better-known Shakespeare plays such as Hamlet and King Lear as well as lesser-known titles such as Troilus and Cressida and Timon of Athens. Although the theater was critically lauded for its innovative approach to classic works, it was limited by the age and spatial restrictions of the Ruth Page Theater and began looking for a new performance space in the late 1990s.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater has, since October 1999, been in residence in a new, seven-story, 75,000-square-metre (810,000 sq ft) facility on Chicago's Navy Pier, which houses its box office, administrative offices, and performance venues. The first performance at this facility was Eric Idle reading from his novel, The Road to Mars.
The 510-seat Courtyard Theater, which is the primary production venue for CST, features state-of-the-art technology and acoustics together with a versatile thrust stage and deep proscenium, that create a flexible performance space. A second theater, the 200-seat black box Upstairs space, is devoted to smaller but still-popular productions such as The Second City's smash hit, Romeo and Juliet Musical: The People Vs. Friar Laurence, The Man Who Killed Romeo and Juliet.

Navy Pier opened to the public on July 15, 1916. Originally known as the Municipal Pier, the pier was built by Charles Sumner Frost, a nationally known architect, with a design based on the Plan of Chicago (1909) by Daniel Burnham and Edward H. Bennett Its original purpose was to serve as a dock for freights, passenger traffic, and indoor and outdoor recreation; events like expositions and pageants were held there.

CHICAGO NAVY PIER TOUR | Nepali BrewBoy Adventures
Navy Pier, Chicago, IL
Of the many and varied attractions in Chicago, its most-visited is still the Navy Pier. Originally Municipal Pier #2, it was designed and built to serve as a cargo facility, passenger dock, and public gathering place. Jutting out onto Lake Michigan, the pier provided a cooler, breezier place than the city for crowds to attend entertainments during the stuffy summers, and had its own tram service out to the edge for those who didn’t wish to walk. When it opened to the public in 1916, it was the largest pier in the world.
During the 1910s, automobiles and trucks were beginning to take over some of the weight of transportation from ships, which delivered both freight and passengers to Chicago’s port. Thus its primary function became as an entertainment site, and steamboat traffic decreased. The pier was completed just in time for use in WWI, when military personnel and Red Cross workers took up residence during 1917-1918. After the war, the roaring twenties ushered in a streetcar line, theatre, auditorium, dance hall, radio station, dining pavilions, and the ‘Pageant of Progress’ in 1922. In 1927, in honor of WWI veterans who had served there, it officially became Navy Pier.
The pier saw many other notable moments in history, including the 1933 World’s Fair Century of Progress Exposition, Great Depression New Deal agencies, and conversion to a naval training center for the U.S. military during WWII. Following WWII, it became a college campus primarily serving returning veterans, until the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976 returned it to public use. Music and art festivals shared the pier with exhibition halls, and in 1989, a major overhaul brought new life to the pier.
Currently, the pier is home to a variety of entertainments and attractions, including its own Ferris wheel, IMAX theatre, concert stage, ballroom, public art installations, miniature golf course, funhouse maze, beer garden, and Pier Park, a small amusement park set on the upper deck beside the Crystal Gardens. Cultural attractions include the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Chicago Children’s Museum, and Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. Sightseeing, architecture, and dinner cruises launch from the pier, and during the summer, there are even fireworks.
There is, in short, something for everyone. Seasonal festivals range from Tall Ships Chicago, the Inuit Show of Folk & Outsider Art, and Chicago Toy & Game Fair, to the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, Winter WonderFest, and Snow Days Chicago. I was in town for the latter two, which were more than enough to keep me busy during my visit. Winter WonderFest is an indoor winter festival, where you can ice skate, toboggan, ride a holiday train or carousel, climb a snowy mountain wall, or stand inside a snow globe…all in the warm comfort of the indoors. Snow Days Chicago requires you to get a little chillier, but you can snowboard, visit with penguins from nearby Shedd Aquarium, or attend the most spectacular attraction, the snow sculpting competition.
Chicago is fun to visit anytime, but there’s something especially enchanting about Navy Pier in December. There are holiday lights everywhere, and the pier is jam-packed with restaurants and shops. It’s a perfect place to spend a day relaxing and enjoying the season. Don’t worry too much about making a plan—you’ll find plenty to see and do just wandering around the pier. I will make a plug for the stained glass museum, which was a strange, wonderful glimpse into the old mansions of Chicago, through the art of Louis Comfort Tiffany and other masters.

Driving Downtown - The Navy Pier - Chicago Illinois
Cost: $14 for parking.
Navy Pier is a 3,300-foot-long (1,010 m) pier on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. It is located in the Streeterville neighborhood of the Near North Side community area. The pier was built in 1916 at a cost of $4.5 million. It was a part of the Plan of Chicago developed by architect and city planner Daniel Burnham and his associates. As Municipal Pier #2 (Municipal Pier #1 was never built), Navy Pier was planned and built to serve as a mixed-purpose piece of public infrastructure. Its primary purpose was as a cargo facility for lake freighters, and warehouses were built up and down the Pier. However, the Pier was also designed to provide docking space for passenger excursion steamers, and in the pre–air conditioning era parts of the Pier, especially its outermost tip, were designed to serve as cool places for public gathering and entertainment. The Pier even had its own tram. Today, the pier is one of the most visited attractions in the entire Midwestern United States and is Chicago's number one tourist attraction.[2]
Fourth use: public gathering place
Centerpiece attractions include a Ferris wheel,[8] an IMAX theater, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Amazing Chicago's Funhouse Maze, the Chicago Children's Museum, the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, and at the entrance to Navy Pier is a statue of Oak Park comedian Bob Newhart, sponsored by the TV Land network.[9]
The Pier now features a large front lawn showcasing numerous larger-than-life public art sculptures and an interactive animated fountain created by WET (of Fountains of Bellagio fame). The Pier continues to be used as an embarkation point for tour and excursion boats and is a popular place to watch lakefront events, including the annual Air and Water airshow and the parade of lighted and decorated boats during Chicago's Venetian Night festival.
The Pier and its grounds encompass more than 50 acres (200,000 m2) of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants and other shore entertainment. Navy Pier contains 170,000 total square feet of exhibition space, 50,000 square feet (5,000 m2) of reception space and 48,000 square feet (4,500 m2) of meeting room space.
Attractions
Navy Pier attractions include sightseeing tours from companies such as Seadog Ventures, Shoreline Sightseeing cruises and Water Taxi service, and the Tall Ship Windy. There are also dinner cruises by Entertainment Cruises, on their ships the Spirit of Chicago, The Odyssey II, and the Mystic Blue. The Pier has fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday nights during the summer and Saturday nights during the fall.[9]
The popular Strictly Sail boat show and Chicago Flower and Garden Show are held at the Pier, as are many other fairs and expositions throughout the year. There are also seasonal festivals for Halloween and Christmas. The Chicago Children's Museum is a part of Navy Pier, with many different exhibits and activities for both children and adults to enjoy while visiting the museum.[9][10] The Pier also has an IMAX theater and the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, many of which were salvaged from Chicago mansions.
An anchor from the naval vessel USS Chicago (CA-136/CG-11) is on display at the far end of the Pier[11]
Pier Park
Pier Park is a landscaped area outdoors on the upper deck, between the Crystal Gardens and the Pepsi Skyline Stage.[8]
Attractions include the 150-foot (45.7 m) tall Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, which was manufactured by Vekoma[12] and opened on July 1, 1995.[13] It operates year-round, weather permitting, and has 40 gondolas, each seating up to 6 passengers. Its 40 spokes, spanning a diameter of 140 feet (42.7 m), are illuminated in the evenings.[8]
The world record for the longest Ferris wheel ride was set by Clinton Shepherd, the park operations manager, who spent 48 hours, 8 minutes and 25 seconds riding the Pier's wheel over the weekend of May 18–19, 2013.[14]
Other rides include a musical carousel, the Light Tower Ride, and Wave Swinger, an old-fashioned swinging thrill ride almost 40 feet (12 m) high.[8]
Other Pier Park amusements include an 18-hole miniature golf course, and token-operated remote-control boats.[8]

Founded in 1978, Child's Play Touring Theatre was the first theatre company to realize the value of children's own writing and perform exclusively stories and poems written by young authors. Combining the important, imaginative writings of children with the craftsmanship of professional theatre artists and educators, they created a unique stage where children's voices can be heard, examined and treasured.
A nationally recognized, 501(c )3 not-for-profit organization, they inspire young people to read, write and think creatively. The goal at Child's Play is to help children understand the value and significance that writing and reading has on their lives. Their performances and workshops offer a powerful teaching tool that strengthens and enhances the teaching and learning process.
Over the years, Child's Play has developed multiple partnerships with other arts education organizations to bring enhanced arts curricula to schools and communities throughout the United States. To date, they have reached over 4 million children, educators and adults through workshops, residencies, after school programs, and summer camps, and have performed the original works of over 15,000 young writers.
The future dreams of the company include reaching an even greater audience through the website, increased international touring, an educational television program which will give young writers a chance to see their work produced for television, and the publication of their vast repertory in CD, video, and anthology form.

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and her husband have loaned her campaign $200,000. Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and her husband have loaned her campaign $200,000. Welcome to Clout Street: Morning Spin, our weekday feature to catch you up with what's going on in government and politics from Chicago to Springfield. Topspin Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and her husband have loaned her campaign $200,000 for the stretch run, a sign of how hard-fought the Democratic primary contest has become. Dr. James Gomez helped finance Alvarez’s first campaign eight years ago by loaning a total of $640,000. That year, Alvarez won the Democratic nomination in a field of six candidates vying to succeed retiring prosecutor Richard Devine. Over the years, Alvarez’s campaign fund had paid back all but $33,500. This time out, Alvarez faces two challengers: Kim Foxx, a former prosecutor and onetime chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and Donna More, a former prosecutor and Illinois Gaming Board lawyer who’s now in private practice representing gambling interests. The Friends for Foxx campaign fund has received contributions of about $1.38 million. Liberal Democratic donor Fred Eychaner has contributed $400,000. Service Employees International Union affiliates have contributed $189,000 in cash and services. Preckwinkle’s campaign fund chipped in $50,000. In addition, billionaire Democratic donor George Soros has poured $220,000 into the Illinois Safety and Justice super political action committee that backs Foxx. More so far has raised more than $1 million. That includes more than $530,000 out of her own pocket. Late Tuesday, More reported putting in another $200,000 last week. Alvarez has been raising campaign funds years longer than her two first-time challengers. Over the past 14 months, more than $1.3 million has been contributed or loaned to Alvarez’s campaign fund, with hundreds of thousands of dollars coming in recent months from construction trades unions. Driving into Downtown - Chicago Illinois
Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States, after New York City and Los Angeles. With 2.7 million residents it is the most populous city in both the U.S. state of Illinois and the American Midwest. Its metropolitan area, sometimes called Chicagoland, is home to 9.5 million people and is the third-largest in the United States. Chicago is the seat of Cook County.
Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, and experienced rapid growth in the mid-nineteenth century. Today, the city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation, with O'Hare International Airport being the busiest airport in the world; it also has the largest number of U.S. highways, and railroad freight entering its region. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and ranks seventh in the world in the 2014 Global Cities Index. As of 2012, Chicago had the third largest gross metropolitan product in the United States, after the New York City and Los Angeles metropolitan areas, at a sum of US$571 billion.
In 2012, Chicago hosted 46.37 million international and domestic visitors, an overall visitation record. Chicago's culture includes contributions to the visual arts, novels, film, theater, especially improvisational comedy, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, and the creation of house music. The city has many nicknames, which reflect the impressions and opinions about historical and contemporary Chicago. The best-known include the Windy City and Second City. Chicago has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues.
