Saturday, July 9th check out the Gold Coast Art Fair located on the corner of Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive. The third oldest art fair, it is often called the Granddaddy of American Art Festivals and one of the top twenty art festivals in the country. The fair showcases the works of more than 350 artists from around the world. The event is free and open to the public from 9am until 7pm. Art prices start at just $25. There are also kids activities including a scavenger hunt and creative studio called Make a Messterpiece which encourages young artist to get messy!

Try a new water sport this summer. Great Lakes Board Company located at North Avenue Beach offers stand up paddle board lessons and rentals. Paddle boarding is a hybrid of surfing and kayaking which involves standing on an oversized surf board. All ages are welcome and experience is not necessary. The biggest draw of stand up paddle boarding is the unique experience it offers as it feels like you are walking on water. For seasoned paddle boarders the Great Lakes Board Company has added core fitness classes done entirely on paddle boards. Rentals are available through mid October. Prices start at $25 per hour and lessons are $50 an hour.

One of my favorite summer treats is custard at Scooters in Lakeview. Scooter's is the oldest of its kind in Chicago and your typical mom and pop type custard shop. Try a concrete with cookies, candy or fruit mixed into the custard. The Elvis concrete, a combination of bananas and reeses peanut butter cups, is a favorite of mine. Also on the menu are shakes, sundaes, Italian ice and Chicago style hot dogs. Their hours are typically 2pm to 9pm. Be sure to check the website for the concrete of the month and daily specials.
