Jack Dempsey, world heavyweight boxing champion from 1919 to 1926, spent his boyhood in Logan, the county seat of Logan County. Dempsey was born in Manassa, Colorado, but grew up in Logan, West Virginia. He began his career as a fighter at the tender age of 12 while working in the mines. Mining camp boxing bouts were set up. He lost the title to Gene Tunney in 1926. At their second fight in 1927, he lost again on the so-called long-count when he failed to go to a neutral corner after knocking Tunney down in the seventh round.
South of Logan is the burial site for Devil Anse Hatfield, one of the family leaders in the famous feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys. Logan was originally called Lawnsville when it became the county seat in 1824. It later was named Aracoma, after the eldest daughter of Chief Cornstalk when she came to live there with her white husband, Bolling Baker. In 1907, it was renamed Logan in honor of the chief of the Mingos.

Wapiti Woods West Virginia - onX Hunt Public Access Project
It is elementary, but wild elk need habitat to thrive. And they need it in a place where they are welcome.
That was a major concern as West Virginia geared up to restore elk to its native range in the Mountain State.
When the reintroduction took place in 2016, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation committed $300,000 plus manpower toward efforts to do so.
In an initial step toward that commitment, RMEF granted $50,000 dollars to a 2017 transaction spearheaded by The Conservation Fund to secure 32,000 acres of reclaimed mine lands that are prime forest and grasslands in Logan and Mingo Counties.
In a part of the nation where public land and public access is limited, this swath of land lies at ground zero in West Virginia’s elk zone now known as the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area.
Today, due to additional purchases and leases, it now covers 44,000 acres and remains open for hunting and other recreational use.
Opening and improving public access is key to RMEF’s conservation work.

Edness K. Wilkins is a serene day-use park for families, nature lovers and those looking for solitude can enjoy. The huge old cottonwoods as they cast reflections on the historic North Platte River and lend shade to visitors. The North Platte River provides a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife, and for fishing, canoeing and rafting. Today, a visitor can utilize picnic tables, grills, group shelters, playgrounds and a launching ramp for canoes or rafts. A universally accessible fishing pier, the only one like it in the state, has become one of the finest amenities provided to visitors. An additional 2.8 miles of accessible hard-surfaced paths provide visitors with an opportunity view some of the finest wildlife in the area. Anglers can try their fishing luck in the North Platte River. Swimmers can take a refreshing dip at the park swimming area. Bird watching enthusiasts can wile away the hours searching for yellow warblers, cedar waxwings, downy woodpeckers, and dozens of others. PARANORMAL: The Ghost and Murder of Mamie Thurman
PLEASE SHARE: October 22nd, 1932. 31 year old Mamie Thurman is found murdered, shot twice in the head and her throat cut from ear to ear, atop Trace Mountain in Logan County, West Virginia. Mamie, wife of Logan County Police Officer, Jack Thurman, was found to have been having a 2 year love affair with the head of the Logan City Commission, Harry Robertson. Police arrested Robertson and his African American Man Friday Clarence Stephenson for Mamie's murder.
A sensational pre-trial hearing and trial followed. Logan County, West Virginia, and most of the United States watched. Representatives of both the white and African American press showed up to cover what promised to be a trial celeb. Large, powerful names in Logan County and West Virginia followed the four-day trial as if it were a radio soap opera.
In October 1932, Clarence Stephenson was found guilty of Mamie's murder and sentenced to life in West Virginia's Moundsville prison. Stephenson appealed his case all the way to West Virginia's Supreme Court. The verdict was upheld. He died in 1942, maintaining his innocence to the very end. The outcome of the trial is still debated to this very day. Local residents soon dubbed Mamie The Vixen of Stratton Street, a name to which she may have taken posthumous offense.
Local legend tells that Mamie Thurman's spirit still haunts the roadway along the old coal mine road on 22 Mountain where her lifeless body was found. A ghost in search of answers and absolution. Also, the precise location of her 1932 burial has been lost to time, the elements and vandals. Today, Thurman's final resting place has evolved into a mystery of its own...one which you, the viewer, may be able to help resolve. Is Thurman buried in Logan Memorial Park in West Virginia or in the Old Liberty Cemetery in Bradfordsville, Kentucky?
Is Mamie Thurman trying to tell us that she is angry at how her image is treated by history? Or is she upset that her final resting place now belongs only to the ages? Is she perhaps saying that Stephenson was innocent of her murder? Is she hinting that others may have been involved in her murder and have escaped justice for 86 years?
You must decide the answers to these questions yourself.

Full-Time Camping Trial Run at Stonewall Jackson, WV
We did it!! We survived our first night in the camper. Before we set out on our journey we decided it was a good idea to do a test run first. I'm glad we did! Running through how to set everything up, hooking up and unhooking from the truck helped a lot. We forgot a few things and discovered our air conditioner did not work. We did 1 night at Stonewall Resort before heading to Ohio to start our Journey. Follow us to Ohio on our next Video upload.
