War Eagle was born in Minnesota or Wisconsin around 1785.He had left his own tribe, the Santee, to avoid bloodshed in a fight as to who would be chief. As a young man, War Eagle spent considerable time working among the white Americans.During the War of 1812, he carried messages for the United States government, and worked among the native peoples to promote the cause of the United States against the British.

Key Flood Vantage Points Drawing Onlookers, Photographers
(YANKTON, SD and SIOUX CITY, IA) One thing is for sure: as Siouxland works to fight against the rising water, we're all witnessing history.
And it seems a big part of living through an event makes people want to experience it firsthand, and see the power of Mother Nature themselves. We stopped by one of the biggest tourist attractions right now, Gavins Point Dam, where releases have reached record levels and continue to climb.
It's something that people could see, here at the dam, not down in the way of people sandbagging, but just come to the power house and see what's going on here, says Julie Brunick of Yankton.
We saw the mist, actually, from the main highway up there already, and the closer we got, our jaws all kind of dropped, and it's pretty amazing to see it, says Molly Post of George, IA.
Farther down stream in Sioux City, people from near and far are getting to the highest vantage points they can find to get a clearer look at the big picture. With the War Eagle and Sergeant Floyd Monuments perched high atop Siouxland, they've been drawing plenty of photographers.
It puts it in a better perspective when you can see, you know, the tri--state area. Of course from here, we can't see where I live, but Nebraska across the way. But it's pretty shocking, it really is, but obviously in the days to come, it will seem like nothing, says Esther Weis of Union County, SD.
A lot of water, water where I've never seen it before. I'm hoping the levees hold, I know they're pretty fragile, a whole summer's worth of water running by it, it's going to test it, says Dick Closter of Le Mars, IA.
People have posted their pictures and video online. You can find thousands of examples on the Siouxland Flooding Facebook page.
DAKOTA 38 - Full Movie in HD
To download the film in HD, or burn your own DVD for free, visit smoothfeather.com/dakota38. In honoring honor native traditions surrounding ceremonies, we are screening and distributing Dakota 38 as a gift rather than for sale.
In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862. When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator... As any recovered alcoholic, I made believe that I didn't get it. I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it's one of those dreams that bothers you night and day.
Now, four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution. We can't blame the wasichus anymore. We're doing it to ourselves. We're selling drugs. We're killing our own people. That's what this ride is about, is healing. This is the story of their journey- the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away.
