Saltwater Underground Railroad Station -2-McLeod Plantation
After a series of property owner exchanges, the McLeod Plantation was established in South Carolina in 1851 by William Wallace McLeod, a cotton planter. Approximately 74 enslaved Africans lived on the property occupying 26 buildings known as Transition Row.
Other buildings on site include the Cotton Gin House, Dairy and Kitchen, and the Main Plantation Big House. A cemetery on the northern end of the property holds the remains of approximately one-hundred African souls, half of them children.
Near the plantation, Gullah/Geechee communities were established that still survive today. The Gullah/Geechee people are the remnant of African culture and tradition in the United States. Stretching from North Carolina to Florida their lands are rich with stories of the enslaved Africans who toiled and triumphed over the institution of chattel slavery.
It is known that eleven Africans escaped from the McLeod plantation during the American Civil War. One in particular, William Dawson, joined the U.S Navy, served on a gunboat and a frigate, and then returned after the war ended to farm the land where he had been held captive. The others may have joined the Union regiments that were established in South Carolina to fight against the confederate army, or may have journeyed South through Florida and eventually along the Saltwater Underground Railroad to The Bahamas.

Black Slave Owner and Breeder in South Carolina ~ The Interesting Story of William Ellison
....William Ellison was one of the wealthiest men in the South as well as being a black, former slave. He owned cotton gins, plantations, and 68 slaves. And from accounts of the time, he wasn't very nice...At the peak of slavery in the United States, large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some 8 million of them lived in the slaveholding states. The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves. Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 % of southern whites owning one or more slaves, however, around 30% for free blacks owned slaves).
In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more.

REB Digs; Archaeological Excavation of the 55Th Massachusetts Soldiers on Folly Beach S.C.
In 1987 nineteen soldiers from the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry were discovered on Folly Beach S.C. This was and still is the first instance of African Americans from the Civil War being found I our country's history. They were discovered while I was relic hunting a Civil War campsite, that was being bulldozed for a new housing development. The University of South Carolina Archaeology and Anthropology Department head up the excavation of the soldiers remain. I volunteered during and after the excavation. The soldiers were reinterred on Memorial Day 1989 with full military honors in the Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina.
