Meeting Panda Bears in Chengdu, Sichuan, China!
See the photos of adorable pandas here! --
You can see panda bears, just like when they are in wild. In Chengdu Panda Bear breeding center. They did really a good job. You'll see more than 20 living pandas in the facility, but it is just like open zoo. They looked happy and healthy.
I visited here when I was in Chengdu, Sichuan, and really enjoyed it. They are adorable, everything they do is amazingly cute. The entrance fee is 58CNY, cheaper than most of the attractions in China. When you are in Sichuan, don't forget to visit them!

New Panda Center Opens in Southwest China
A new panda center opens to visitors on Wednesday in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province in southwest China.
Seven pandas born last year entered Shenshuping Panda Center as the first group of panda.
Shenshuping Panda Center is built after the Wolong National Natural Reserve was badly damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008. Its opening marks the completion of reconstruction work to assist Wolong by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The Shenshuping Panda Center would be responsible of artificially-bred panda' wildness training and reintroduction and provide more supports for the scientific research and protection of panda, said Li Desheng, deputy director of Wolong National Natural Reserve Administration.
The Center is a comprehensive natural reserve of about 19,800 square meters. It provides two types of accommodations for giant pandas -- captive cages for 59 giant pandas and semi-natural enclosures. Other facilities include a visitor's center, a veterinary hospital, etc. Wildlife observation spots also attract explorers, tourists, animal-lovers as well as scientists.
Most giant pandas in the center stay individually in the captive cages, which are actually large enclosures, each consisting of an in-door room and an out-door courtyard. Those giant pandas are put in the semi-natural enclosures for long enough so that they can adapt to the natural environment before being released back into the wild. More on:

Foreign Keepers Learn to Feed Pandas in southwest China
A number of foreign animal keepers have come to China to learn how to feed giant pandas, an animal unique to China, as more pandas have been loaned to other countries for cooperative research on their reproduction.
Brenda Vah and Marga Gerritsen are panda keepers from the Netherlands, who are spending one month to study panda keeping at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
They started by learning to cook meals for pandas.
Especially the young one here. This is the first time for us to see a young one and to come so close, said Brenda Vah.
For us, it is very important to be here, because we worked with a lot of animals, also bears, but not with Chinese pandas, we are welcome here to come and learn, from the people who know everything about pandas, so we become a very good keeper at home in the Netherlands, and we really want to thank everybody for this opportunity, said Marga Gerritsen.
China has carried out cooperation projects on giant pandas with 12 zoos in 10 countries over the past 20 years, and loaned more than 30 pandas overseas.
The two pandas loaned to the Netherlands are accommodated by the Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen.
Every spring and autumn, this international institution that has cooperation with us would send their keepers or nurses here to learn with us at this center, about things like artificial insemination. On the other hands, they wish that we could send experts to their county to offer instruction when our pandas in their country go into heat or are about to deliver babies, said Li Desheng, expert with the center.

PANDAS! Visiting China's National Treasure in Chengdu (CC)
This was absolutely one of the best days we had in all of China! We got to the Chengdu Panda Base early enough to watch the pandas chowing down on some tasty bamboo. The best part was the BABIES! (Well, okay, they were toddlers--but STILL, they were amazing.) So cute, so cuddly, so clumsy. Just precious.
Tips: If you go, make sure to get there early. You'll beat the largest crowds, and you'll get to see the pandas eat, which is the highlight. (Later on in the day will have them napping, which is still cute, but not nearly as exciting as watching them chow down on bamboo.)
(Closed Captioned)
The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!

Lunch time at the Panda Base
Eating bambo is a serious business, and two paws are simply not enough in many cases! (A video from the Chengdu Panda Base).
Chengdu in China has been the hometown of the giant panda -- one of the world's most endangered species - for more than 8 million years, and the Chengdu Panda Base (a not-for-profit organisation) is a world-renowned breeding and research center for the giant panda. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012, the Panda Base now has the largest controlled breeding population in the world -- 108 giant pandas.
Panda Awareness Week highlights the work of the Chengdu Panda Base in fostering the continued growth of the giant panda population, as well as rescuing and rehabilitating pandas so they can return to the wild.
To celebrate Panda Awareness Week, 108 pandas brought panda-monium to the streets of London on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of July.
