A Quick Tour of the Beijing Railway Museum in China
Video courtesy of The Beijing Railway Museum 北京铁路博物馆 opened in 2008 in the old Zhengyangmen East Railway Station and is conveniently located just to the southeast of the Tian'anmen Square. In 2010, the Beijing Railway Museum was renamed the Zhengyangmen Branch of the China Railway Museum. This is because the main China Railway Museum 中国铁道博物馆 (traditional Chinese is 中國鐵道博物館) is located about 15 km northeast of Zhengyangmen Branch in central Beijing near Tian'anmen Square.
The larger of these two Chinese museums focuses on preserving locomotives that were built dating back as far as 1949 in the People's Republic of China. This museum has an impressive 16500 square meters of exhibition space with 8 exhibition tracks.
The downtown Beijing Railway Museum focuses more on the 130 years of railway development and exhibits photographs and models to construction of track, trains, stations etc., and features some of the MOW machinery used to maintain the railroad tracks. The 10,000 square meter Beijing central museum also shows plenty of information on the high speed bullet trains and how the rail network is expanding across China. It even features a CRH-3 Bullet Train Simulator Cockpit where you can drive a bullet train.
If you are interested in railroading or model trains then you are sure to find both of these Chinese museums of interest, especially with the Zhengyangmen Branch located so conveniently close to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. A great tour stop-over on your vacation.

Beijing Railway Museum / 北京铁路博物馆
The Beijing Railway Museum (北京铁路博物馆) was opened in 2008 in a building to includes the clock-tower of the former Zhengyangmen East Railway Station of the Jingfeng Railway (京奉铁路正阳门东车站), just southeast of the Tian'anmen Square. The rest of the building is entirely new-build, dating from the 1979 construction of Beijing Subway Line 4, which required the rest of the old station to be demolished. The historic facade was then reconstructed, in mirror-image, on the opposite (right hand) side of the clock tower. In October 2010, Beijing Railway Museum was renamed to the Zhengyangmen Branch (正阳门馆) of the China Railway Museum. This part of the museum contains only one full size historic locomotive - an 0-6-0 tank engine from the 19th century. The rest of the displays comprise models, maps (some in 3D relief), photographs, documents and displays about the development of railways in China, including architectural models of six new stations on the CRH China Railway High-speed system. Also on display is a CRH3 cab simulator.

Tiananmen Square/Beijing/China:
Tiananmen Square is a city square in the centre of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. The square contains the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China in the square on October 1, 1949; the anniversary of this event is still observed there. Tiananmen Square is within the top ten largest city squares in the world (440,500 m2 – 880×500 m or 109 acres – 960×550 yd).[citation needed] It has great cultural significance as it was the site of several important events in Chinese history.
Outside China, the square is best known for the Tiananmen Square Massacre, an armed suppression of a pro-democracy movement in June 1989.
The Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace), a gate in the wall of the Imperial City, was built in 1415 during the Ming dynasty. In the 17th century, fighting between Li Zicheng's rebel forces and the forces of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty caused heavy damage to, or even destroyed, the gate. Tiananmen Square was designed and built in 1651, and has since been enlarged by four times its original size in the 1950s.
Used as a massive meeting place since its creation, its flatness is contrasted by the 38-metre (125 ft) high Monument to the People's Heroes, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. The square lies between two ancient, massive gates: the Tian'anmen to the north and the Zhengyangmen (better known as Qianmen) to the south. Along the west side of the square is the Great Hall of the People. Along the east side is the National Museum of China (dedicated to Chinese history predating 1919). Chang'an Avenue, which is used for parades, lies between the Tian'anmen and the square. Trees line the east and west edges of the Square, but the square itself is open, with neither trees nor benches. The square is lit with large lamp posts which are fitted with video cameras. It is heavily monitored by uniformed and plain-clothes police officers.
Tiananmen Square has been the site of a number of political events and student protests.
Perhaps the most notable events are protests during the May Fourth Movement in 1919, the proclamation of the People's Republic of China by Mao Zedong on October 1, 1949, the Tiananmen Square protests in 1976 after the death of Zhou Enlai, and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, which resulted in military suppression and the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of civilian protestors. One of the most famous images that appears during these protests was when a man stood in front of a line of moving tanks and refused to move, which was captured on Chang'an Avenue near the square.
Tiananmen Square
Other notable events include annual mass military displays on each anniversary of the 1949 proclamation until 1 October 1959; the 1984 military parade for the 35th anniversary of the People's Republic of China which coincided with the ascendancy of Deng Xiaoping; military displays and parades on the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in 1999; the Tiananmen Square self-immolation incident in 2001; military displays and parades on the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in 2009, and an incident in 2013 involving a vehicle that plowed into pedestrians.Wikipedia

Beijing China Travel Guide - Magical Mix of History and Future
Beijing China Travel Guide - Magical Mix of History and Future
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China, the most populous country in the world. it is the nation's second-largest city after Shanghai. It was also the seat of the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors until the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911. Beijing is the political, educational and cultural centre of the country and as such it is rich in historical sites and important government and cultural institutions.
Beijing is known as much for modern architecture as its ancient sites such as the grand Forbidden City complex, the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby, the massive Tiananmen Square pedestrian plaza is the site of Mao Zedong’s mausoleum and the National Museum of China, displaying a vast collection of cultural relics.
The city is marked by its flatness and arid climate. There are only three hills to be found in the city limits (in Jingshan Park to the north of Forbidden City) and mountains surround the capital on three sides. Like the configuration of the Forbidden City, Beijing has concentric ring roads, which are actually rectangular, that go around the metropolis and serve as good reference points as one attempts to move about the city. Beyond the ring roads are the most-visited portions of the Great Wall of China, which witnesses visitors the world over and Beijing serves as a good headquarters for those who wish to gaze upon one of mankind's more memorable and lasting structures. Beijing was host to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, and will also host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the first only city to host both these events.
The two districts are located within or around the Second Ring Road and make-up the old walled city of yesteryear. Xicheng means West City and Dongcheng means East City. Surrounding these districts are Chaoyang, Fengtai and Hadian. These three districts hold impressive new urban and commercial development, have a population of many millions, and generate the economic prosperity of the city. The remaining eleven districts and counties are quite far from the centre. The main reason to go out is to visit the Great Wall of China, passing through Northern Rural Beijing.
The centre of the city and most important landmark is Tiananmen Square in Dongcheng District. This is the world's largest public square and a must see for all visitors from abroad and from elsewhere in China. The square is surrounded by grand buildings including the Great Hall of the People, the Museum of Chinese History, the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, the Qianmen Gate and the Forbidden City. It is also home to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the Monument to the People's Martyrs and was also the site of the infamous massacre of student activists by the Peoples Liberation Army in 1989.
The National Stadium or affectionately Bird's Nest, in Chaoyang District is a major landmark and a lasting symbol of the 2008 Olympic Games. Two contemporary buildings in Chaoyang District are remarkable landmarks: the CCTV Building (sometimes called The Underpants or Bird Legs by locals) and the World Trade Center Tower III. Both are outstanding examples of contemporary architecture. There are also a number of remarkable remains from the medieval city including the Ming Dynasty City Wall Site Park (the only remains of the city wall) in Chongwen District, the Drum and Bell Towers in Dongcheng District, and Qianmen in Chongwen District.

PAUL HODGE: TIANANMEN SQUARE, SOLO AROUND WORLD IN 24 DAYS, Ch 80 of 95, Amazing World Minutes
Chapter 80 of 95, How to Go Solo Around the World in 24 Days, chronicles Paul Hodge's October 30, 2011 walk from the Tiananmen Square Metro station to Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is the largest city square in the center of Beijing. It is named after the Forbidden City's Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace) which is across Chang'an Avenue north of the square. The square has great cultural history for China. For people outside China, the square is often remembered for the pro-democracy movement's protests which ended on June 4, 1989 with the institution of martial law and many deaths. Numerous official ceremonies/celebrations are held there. Parades occur on Chang'an Avenue in front of the Tiananmen Gate where the officials stand and review. In and surrounding the square are some major structures, including The Great Hall of the People, The Monument of the People's Heroes, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, the National Museum of China and the Zhengyangmen Gate Tower. Many people come to the square to pay their respects and have their photos taken.
How to Go Solo Around the World in 24 Days is the first ever video book to instruct viewers as to how to go around the world solo. By providing the viewer with detailed videos and commentary of his recent 24 day World adventure, author Paul Hodge, who has twice adventured around our planet, shows what it realistically takes to plan and successfully execute this life changing bucket list achievement.
