The Japanese Tower and the Chinese House, Brussels, Belgium.
We have visited the Japanese Tower and the Chinese House in 2012. Located on the estate of the Belgian Royal Residence, they were erected at the behest of King Leopold II for the occasion of the 1900 World's Fair of Paris. They have been open to the public since 1913.
Chinese Pavillion and Japanese Pagoda Brussels Belgium
Krazy King Leopold (who was very evil and a monster in how he treated the natives in the Congo.. I'm talking really EVIL) was also a little nuts and built a Japanese Pagoda (with a wonderful collection of Japanese armor) and a Chinese Pavillion (left over from the Paris Expo). These had nothing to do with REAL China or Japan, simply his version of it. Still whenever we would go to visit, there would hardly be anyone there. Near the current HUGE royal palace (probably still paid for with those profits from the Congo).
BRUSSELS CHINESE PAVILLION (City Sightseeing + Trilingual Info)
ENGLISH
A little north of the royal palace stand the contrasting Chinese Pavilion and the Japanese Tower. The Chinese Pavilion was commissioned by King Leopold II. The halls are designed in Louis XIV-style and Louis-XVI-style and decorated with Chinese motifs, chinaware and silverware.
NEDERLANDS

'The Chinese pavilion was built on the edge of the Royal Estate at Laeken on the orders of King Leopold II between 1901 and 1910. The wooden panelling on the outside of the Chinese Pavilion and its entry pavilion were sculpted in Shanghai. The pavilion houses a major collection of Chinese ceramics manufactured for export to Europe. Following the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, King Leopold II decided to commence building-work on the Japanese Tower. Work was entrusted to the Parisian architect, Alexandre Marcel, known for his oriental-style buildings. It was he who purchased the entry pavilion to the Japanese Pagoda, built by a Japanese carpenter, at the Paris Universal Exhibition, and had it decorated by specialists from Yokohama. Next to the Chinese pavilion, a new museum is home to exhibitions on various aspects of Japanese art.'

Inside the Museum of the Far East, Brussels
A tour inside one of the buildings of the Museums of the Far East, near the Atomium, Brussels.
The Museums of the Far East are in three Asian buildings: the Japanese Tower, the Chinese Pavilion and the Museum of Japanese Art.
These buildings are architectural achievements of King Leopold II. The Japanese Tower contains Japanese export art: Imari (18th century), porcelain and cloisonné (19th and early 20th century).
The interior of the Chinese Pavilion was designed as a luxurious restaurant, but was never used like that. The museum contains mostly Chinese export ceramics which was sent to kings and nobles in Europe during the 17th and 18th century.
The renovated carriage house containing the Museum of Japanese Art preserves a rich collection of traditional Japanese art, mostly from the Edo period (1600-1868): scroll paintings, folding screens, kimonos, armor, lacquered boxes, Inro, netsuke (strap buttons).
