The Mphunzi site is one of 127 sites in the UNESCO listed area with depictions of rock art from communities of the Late Stone Age and the Iron Age period. Accompanied by a local guide and a group of children we visit the place.

Malawi Travel Guide - Exploring Africa
Malawi (Chichewa: Malaŵi) is a country in Africa, bordered by Mozambique to the south and east, Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west. Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, runs along most of its eastern border. It's often described as the Warm Heart of Africa, referring to the friendliness of the people.
Much of Malawi is plateau, often reaching to 1,000m (3,000 ft), and the temperature in these highlands is moderate, with the hottest period occurring during the autumn rainy season and the coolest and chilliest in winter. The hottest region in the country is the lower Shire River Valley well south of Blantyre. Temperatures along scenic Lake Malawi are generally warm, but with a cooling breeze, especially in the evenings. Winters (May till July) are dry. The rainy season begins in mid-October to early November and generally runs until March.
Malawi’s people are its greatest asset - friendly, welcoming, colourful and vibrant. It's impossible to visit and not become engaged with the people, but there are now opportunities to spend time in real villages (including staying overnight) for a first-hand experience of the cultures, traditions and daily life. This is an option pretty much everywhere in Malawi, and one well worth taking.
There’s also much to see of Malawi’s history, beginning with the pre-history remains of the Karonga district and the Stone Age rock paintings near Dedza. The Cultural & Museum Centre at Karonga is well worth a visit. Elsewhere, the colonial period is preserved in buildings dating from the David Livingstone era and the defeat of the Arab slave trade is well documented in the museums of Blantyre. Among other museums around the country are a Lake Museum at Mangochi, a mission museum at Livingstonia and a postal services museum near Zomba
Cities & Destinations of Malawi :
Lilongwe - the political capital of Malawi and seat of government
Blantyre - economic capital and largest city; Blantyre's a large and thriving city with an interesting downtown, decent nightlife and music, a range of hotels from the elegant to rest houses, and a vibrant street and market culture
Mzuzu - largest town in the Northern Region and a staging-post for transport to Tanzania
Karonga - quickly growing spurred on by the recent development of a uranium mine and a charming town, not far from the intriguing Misuku Hills and a short distance from Lake Malawi
Mangochi - medium-sized town, formerly known as Fort Johnston, at the southern end of Lake Malawi where it empties into the Shire River and a jumping-off point for the resorts and hostels up the coast of Lake Malawi, on the way to peninsular Cape Maclear
Monkey Bay - a popular large village as you head up the Lake Road from Mangochi toward Cape Maclear
Nkhata Bay - a rocky bay towards the north of the lake - check into one of the lodges and you could be here for a while.
Nkhotakota on the shores of Lake Malawi in the Central Region, is where the explorer David Livingston sat down with the Swahili Arab slave traders to attempt to negotiate an end to the slave trade. Nkhotakota was a slave entrepot, from which slaves were ferried across Lake Malawi to the eastern shore to resume their travel over land to what is now the Tanzanian coast. Nkhotakota is a compact and fascinating town, old in its way and true to the ethnic diversity of this region of Malawi. The place is renowned amongst the tourists for its unspoilt golden sandy beaches north of Nkhotakota. It is home to several small family-run resorts.
Zomba is the old colonial capital of Malawi and is noted for its British colonial architecture, the University of Malawi, and the remarkable Zomba Plateau which rises immediately west of the city.

Starting with Cape Maclear.
The resort strip is located along the village beach.
I suggest that you rent a kayak and escape.
But once you leave the mainland you are officially in the National Park and must pay a small fee.
Look at that.
Even an Italian can swim.
Time to explore some more.

The next objective is two of the hundreds of rock paintings in the Chongoni Reserve near Dedza.
Our final weekend getaway is the Magete Game Reserve.
Warning.
This game reserve is an actual forest so spotting wildlife is extremely difficult.
And it only happens along the road or if you camp next to a water hole.
An elephant for those of you with poor eyesight.
But the real pleasure of this visit is the Lodge pool, restaurant and view.

Hikes & Outings Around Blantyre, Malawi. Combo 196-199
This is a quick preview of 9 day hikes located within a short distance of the town of Blantyre in Malawi. It includes the following peaks Mpingwe, Soche, Bangwe, Malabvi, Ndirande, Michiru, Npemba, Ndirande and the Cross on the southern slopes of Michiru. And 4 a bit further out more (about an hour drive each). These hikes include Chiradzulu, Zomba and two day hikes in Mulanje (Likhabula Falls and Mbiya Pools). Each hike includes a quick map and hike profile.
The next phase are weekend outings starting with kayaking, snorkeling & camping at Cape Maclear. It includes multiple weekend visits. Then closer to home (Blantyre) we visit Game Haven, the popular Sunday brunch spot for cycling with the wildlife or poolside drinks. Then a weekend trip to explore rock art near Detza followed by a weekend camping trip to Majete Game Reserve, to see if we can see the wildlife in this forest reserve.
I end the Malawi series with a 5 day trek to complete the Grand Traverse from Mulanje Boma to Fort Lister-Phalombe. Along the way I stay at four mountain huts and visit countless lovely rivers, pools and waterfalls. I also take note of the many illegal woodcutters and porters carrying wood out of the reserve.

We start with Mt Mpingwe.
1 & 1/4 hours to reach the top.
Took me an hour.
And guess what? The clouds are here.
It is a nice view at least.
Ok I made it to the top, but the top is just just radio towers.
Next is the Way of the Cross loop hike.
2 hours total hiking time.
Next up is Soche Peak.
2 hours total hiking time.
The summit is a bit exposed and scary.
Now for Bangwe which has two peaks.
3/4 of an hour to reach the top.
This is objective 1 at cement post but there is a higher section.
And I'm going to go up there. I think that's the actual summit.
And near by is Malabvi Peak.
2 & 1/4 hours to reach the top.
The summit is marked by a cement column on a boulder.
NE of Blantyre we head for Michiru Peak.
2 & 1/4 hours to reach the top.
Mpemba Peak is harder to reach by car than to actually summit.
3/4 of an hour to reach the top.
Ndirande near St Andrews High School has numerous trails and objectives.
1 hour to reach the top.
More local Blantyre peaks.
We start with Chiradzulu.
This is a difficult but not dangerous hike.
The trailhead is the Lisawo primary school and church.
Chiradzulu is a forest reserve without a forest.
The central peak is a large boulder.
There other less prominent points are to the west… and to the east.
There are a number of trails to the top.
It takes around 3 1/2 hours to reach the top.
Our next stop is the Zomba Plateau.
The highest point is Malumbe Peak.
The plateau is a forest reserve with lots of easy walking trails.
Track time to reach the top from the Sun Bird parking area is 2 hours.
The Bradt Guide has the best route maps of the area.
And Mulanje also offers some good day hikes to waterfalls, pools and tea plantations along the base.
The most popular spot is the Likhabula Falls.
A 3/4 hour easy walk from the park gate.
Guide not required.
And the less popular but even easier spot is the Mbiya Pools.

The climb up to the plateau is lovely but dangerous.
Not family friendly.
The top of Mulanje Forest Reserve is without a forest.
What little is left is under constant threat.
After 5 hard hours of trekking we reach the hut.
The next day is all about relaxing and more woodcutters.
Day 3 is a long traverse day.
More rivers, pools, waterfalls, river crossings and more woodcutters.
Day 4 starts with the summit of a local un-named peak,for the views.
And then easy meadow walking and some swimming.
And then a leisurely stroll on rolling hills with more woodcutters.
The last day is all a steep descent into agricultural villages.
The future of the Mulanje forest is in the hands of the next generation of kids and the saplings.
