Chunchanakatte Falls - ಚುಂಚನಕಟ್ಟೆ ಜಲಪಾತ KR Nagar Mysuru [Mysore]

Water cascades from a height of about 20 meters. It is in the Western Ghats. Here the river falls in two small cascades before joining again to flow as one. Chunchanakatte is the holy place where Lord Sri Rama during his vanvas stopped by and availed the hospitality of a tribal couple called Chuncha and Chunchi. The significance of this place is that the sound of the powerful falls can be heard all over except inside the sanctum sanctorum of the centuries old temple, the story goes that Lord Rama was tired of the constant complaining of Sita Mata and gave a curse saying that the tongue of a woman should not be sharp and since Cauvery (river) is considered to be female the noise that the river generated would not be heard in the sanctum sanctorum of the lord. These shades are visible even today when there is considerable amount of water flowing in the falls. It is situated in Mysore District at a distance of 56 km from Mysore, 14 km from K.R.Nagar.
Cauvery flows into Chunchankatte roaring thunderously forming a 60 feet height and approximately 300 to 400 feet wide waterfalls. There is an Hydral power station nearby. The power plant was started during 1994 and completed (two units) in 1998. Kappadi kshetram, another holy place is located nearby. A weekend picinc to Chunchanakatte falls turned tragic as a CFTRI scientist was washed away in the gushing water. The deceased is Haryana-based Somashekar (40). Somashekar, along with his family members and a few friends, was in the water when the level suddenly rose after the hydel power generation unit closed its production.
Somashekar helped his wife Prathima and two children move to a safer place but before he could come up, he was washed away. Though a few local vendors tried to rescue him with a rope, they could not pull him up because of the force of the water.
Though the hydel power unit sounded the siren and sent a warning signal, tourists who were playing in the water could not hear it. They started moving out only after they started feeling the rise in water level.
KR Nagar police, led by Inspector Shiva Prakash, visited the spot. Professional swimmers and local fishermen have been pressed to fish out the body. Many tourists who were in the spot urged that a siren be fixed near the river to avoid such mishaps
