Mormon Pioneer Trails Exhibit Opens at Church History Museum
The Church History Museum has opened a new exhibit called Mormon Trails: Pathways to Zion. The exhibit emphasizes the various trails Mormon pioneers traveled to Salt Lake City between 1846 and 1890.
The exhibit shows how people traveled by wagon, ship, steamboat, train, and handcart to make it to the Salt Lake Valley. By 1890 more than 91,000 people had emigrated to Salt Lake.
Mormon Trails includes 3D topographical maps, an interactive pioneer trail game, and a functional wagon roadometer.

2018 American Dream Award Honoree: LDS Humanitarian Services
The Salt Lake Chamber American Dreams recognize the important contributions immigrants make every day in Utah.
This program helps remind us about the positive impact of immigrants and how they have helped shape Utah’s history since the Mormon Pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley as refugees in 1847. That shared cultural memory informs our values and beliefs today.
This award honors that legacy by recognizing new pioneers who contribute to our state.

Mormon Artifacts on Display at the Smithsonian
Artifacts from the early history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are on display in a new one-year exhibition at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The “Religion in Early America” exhibit, part of four new The Nation We Build Together exhibitions and interactive experiences, opens to the public on June 28, 2017, in the National Museum of American History.
“Religion in Early America” tells the story of the beliefs and practices of early Americans from 1630 to the 1840s.
We would like visitors to come away with the understanding of three factors of early American life — religious diversity, religious freedom and religious growth,” said museum curator Peter Manseau. To stand in the presence of the physical objects transports you to sharing space with those who had lived with them in early American history.
Visitors to the museum will be able to see an original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, an 1830 first edition of the Book of Mormon, a couple of rare Mormon gold coins and two Kirtland Safety Society notes from 1837. The Latter-day Saint artifacts are on loan from the Church History Library in Salt Lake City, except for the gold coins, which are part of the Smithsonian collection.
“In my opinion, the original manuscript is the most important record in possession of the Church,” said Brandon Metcalf, archivist at the Church History Department. “This is the first time we've ever loaned a page of the original manuscript because it is so rare. Many of the pages that did survive are illegible, and so it's one of our most treasured collections.”

Places to see in ( Salt Lake City - USA )
Salt Lake City, Utah’s high-elevation capital, is bordered by the buoyant waters of the Great Salt Lake and the snow-capped peaks of the Wasatch Range. Downtown’s 10-acre Temple Square, headquarters of the Mormon Church, is home to the majestic, 19th-century Salt Lake Temple and the neo-Gothic Assembly Hall. The acclaimed Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs in the square’s domed Tabernacle.
Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city of Utah, with a population of approximately 190,000 (the Salt Lake Metro Area in its entirety has over a million people). It is one of the largest cities in the Southwest region of the United States, although its climate is more similar to the Rocky Mountain region. It lies in the Salt Lake Valley along the Wasatch Front urban corridor, located between the Wasatch Range to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west; on the border between the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin geographic regions.
Salt Lake City is well-known as the center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the Mormon church), although fewer than half of the city's residents are members. The city is also known as a base for outdoor recreation, including the many nearby ski resorts just east of the city which were thrust into the world spotlight by the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Significant neighborhoods in SLC include Downtown, the financial core that's home to Temple Square (the main headquarters of the Mormon church); Central City, the main residential area of the city, approximately 400 South to 900 South; Sugar House, a commercial/residential district with many local and national shops; Federal Heights, an affluent district to the northeast; The Avenues a historical neighborhood with many late 1800 and early 1900 buildings; University, the area surrounding the sprawling University of Utah campus and the adjacent VA Medical Center, Research Park, and Fort Douglas; East Bench or Foothill, a residential area bisected by the major arterial road Foothill Boulevard between 900 South and I-80; Capitol Hill, an affluent district just north of Downtown topped by the Utah State Capitol building; Rose Park a residential in the northwest section of the city; and Glendale a residential, primarily Hispanic district to the southwest, home to the International Peace Gardens. The benches are the mostly residential, upper-class communities constructed mostly along the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains on the east side of the valley, although they have recently been growing in the southern valley (the low Traverse Mountains) and the western valley (the Oquirrh Mountains). The east side is traditionally more affluent and conservative than the west side, leading to the expected cultural rivalries that you find in other cities with clear divides, although this divide is arguably less pronounced in Salt Lake City than in most major cities.

Elder Andersen Visits Mexican Earthquake Survivors
Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled to Jojutla, Mexico, Wednesday, February 21, 2018, to meet with survivors of last fall’s devastating earthquake.
“One of the great satisfactions was being able to tell these wonderful members of the Church that I brought the love of President [Russell M.] Nelson, the First Presidency [and] the Quorum of the Twelve,” said Elder Andersen.
The Mormon apostle was joined by Elder Lynn G. Robbins of the Presidency of the Seventy, Elder Paul B. Pieper of the Seventy and local Church leaders to assess recovery efforts following the magnitude 7.1 temblor that struck the rural community, located south of Mexico City, on September 19, 2017.
“We are so grateful for good people, not just in the Church, but out of to the Church, who would reach out to people in need and bring them some comfort in knowing we can rebuild our houses,” said Elder Andersen, who was able to communicate in Spanish during his visit to the city in the state of Morelos.
