Ο βυζαντινός ναός του αγίου Παντελεήμονα στη Θεσσαλονίκη (St. Panteleimon, Thessaloniki, GR)
Ο ναός χρονολογείται στα τέλη 13ου - αρχές 14ου αιώνα και σύμφωνα με μια εκδοχή ταυτίζεται με τη Μονή της Θεοτόκου Περιβλέπτου, γνωστή και ως Μονή του κυρ Ισαάκ από το όνομα του ιδρυτή της, ο οποίος με το όνομα Ιάκωβος διετέλεσε μητροπολίτης Θεσσαλονίκης μεταξύ 1295 και 1315. Η μονή αποτέλεσε πνευματικό κέντρο του 14ου αιώνα και συνδέθηκε με τη συγγραφική και διδακτική δραστηριότητα δυο σημαντικών Θεσσαλονικέων: των κορυφαίων λογίων ελληνιστών Θωμά Μαγίστρου και Ματθαίου Βλάσταρη.
Εικάζεται ότι η ονομασία Άγιος Παντελεήμων είναι δανεισμός από το ομώνυμο βόρειο παρεκκλήσι του γειτονικού ναού της Παναγούδας, στο οποίο μεταφέρθηκαν τα σκεύη του ναού όταν μετατράπηκε από τους Τούρκους σε τζαμί ανάμεσα στα 1568 - 1571 με την ονομασία Ισακιγιέ Τζαμί (Ισαάκ). Άλλοι ερευνητές πιστεύουν ότι η Μονή της Περιβλέπτου υπήρχε ήδη το 12ο αι. και ότι η εκκλησία του Αγίου Παντελεήμονος μετατράπηκε σε τζαμί γύρω στα 1500 ή στα 1548 από τον Ισάκ Τσελεμπί, καδή της Θεσσαλονίκης, του οποίου πήρε και το όνομα.

The Renaissance started in San Panteleimon | Macedonia
The Church of St. Panteleimon in Gorno Nerezi, Republic of Macedonia, is a small 12th-century Byzantine church located in a monastery complex. The church and monastery are dedicated to St. Panteleimon, the patron saint of physicians.
The church was constructed in 1164 as a foundation of Alexius Angelus Comnenus, a son of Constantine Angelos and Theodora Komnene, a daughter of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
The church has a domed cruciform core, three apses and a rectangular narthex. It is built of irregular stone blocks and brick embedded in thick layers of mortar. The surrounding monastery complex is enclosed by walls.
The frescoes in the church are famous examples of Comnenian Age Byzantine Art, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ and various hagiographical illustrations. Similar compositions appear in the Latomou Monastery in Thessaloniki. The church was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century. In the restoration that followed, some of the frescoes in the upper middle region have been repainted. The original marble iconostasis survived the earthquake, but lost its decorative plastic art.
In another restoration attempt in 1885, the larger part of the frescoes in the naos were painted over rather ineptly. During cleaning in 1923, some of the original 12th-century frescoes were restored.
The coloring, dramatic composition and purity of expression displayed in the frescoes are outstanding examples of Macedonian medieval monumental painting in the later 12th century.
The church's stucco decoration is depicted on the obverse of the Macedonian 50 denars banknote, issued in 1996.
Renaissance origins
According to Andrew Graham-Dixon, British art historian and writer, these frescoes with their ...physical, electric presence... are proof that there was more to Byzantine art than the formality and otherworldliness of its mosaic and icon tradition. In his book, Graham-Dixon questions 16th century Vasari's beliefs that Giotto di Bondone finally turned fresco painting away from the primitive influence of Byzantium. The frescoes contained within St. Panteleimon at Nerezi are not seen as static, they had the capacity to change into something more obviously human and realistic, anticipating the West's emphasis on depicting Christ as a man of flesh and blood by some 150 years. The lamentation of Christ fresco is described as being a fusion of life and death in a single image as Mary movingly mourns Jesus, cradling him between her legs. Graham-Dixon reminds that these frescoes from the 1160s precede Giotto's similar emotional frescoes from the Arena Chapel near Venice circa 1305. He concludes ...the Byzantine east played a much more formative role in the development of renaissance art than Vasari was prepared to concede.

Το Εμπόριο είναι ένα χωριό της επαρχίας Εορδαίας, έδρα του δήμου Μουρικίου στο Νομό Κοζάνης. Είναι χτισμένο στην ανατολική πλευρά του ομώνυμου δασωμένου βουνού σχεδόν κρυμμένο μέσα στην καστανόφυτη και πευκόφυτη βουνοπλαγιά. Τα λίγα ακόμη σωζόμενα Μακεδονίτικα σπίτια, η γραφική πλατεία, οι στενοί δρομίσκοι με τις βρύσες και ο Ναός του Αγίου Μηνά, πολιούχου και προστάτη του χωριού, δημιουργούν στον επισκέπτη την εντύπωση ενός παλιού ιστορικού χωριού. Το Εμπόριο είναι ενωμένο οικιστικά με την Αναρράχη.
Ο ναός φέρει το όνομα του Αγίου Μεγαλομάρτυρα Μηνά και γιορτάζει στις 11 Νοεμβρίου και χτίστηκε στα θεμέλια παλαιού ναού το έτος 1815 .
Ο ρυθμός του ναού είναι τρίκλιτη Βασιλική με ξύλινη στέγη.
Ο μεγαλύτερος πλούτος του ναού είναι οι αγιογραφίες του που διακρίνονται σε κινητές και ακίνητες και χωρίζονται σε τέσσερις κατηγορίες.
α)Βυζαντινής τεχνοτροπίας που χρονολογούνται από το 1540 έως το 1574.
β)Μακεδονικής τεχνοτροπίας δηλαδή ανάμεικτης βυζαντικής τέχνης και αναγεννησιακής τεχνοτροπίας, είναι οι εικόνες του τέμπλου που χρονολογούνται από το 1815 έως το 1850.
γ)Εικόνες που έφεραν οι πόντιοι πρόσφυγες το 1924 από την Αργυρούπολη του Πόντου και χρονολογούνται από το 1905 έως το 1906.
δ)Εικόνες από το 1930 και μετά με ρυθμό βυζαντινό.
Σήμερα εκτός από τον Ιερό ναό του Αγίου Μηνά υπάρχει και πιστό αντίγραφο του Πύργου του Γαλατά της Κωνσταντινούπολης, πιστό αντίγραφο του Ναού της του Θεού Σοφίας (Αγια – Σοφιάς) της Κωνσταντινούπολης, παρεκκλήσι της Αγίας Αναστασίας της Φαρμοκολύτρας εντός του ναού του Αγίου Μηνά.

Emporio is a village in the province of Eordea, the seat of the municipality of Mouriki in the prefecture of Kozani. It is built on the eastern side of the homonymous forested mountain, almost hidden in the shady and pine-covered mountainside. The few remaining Macedonian houses, the picturesque square, the narrow streets with the taps and the Temple of Agios Minas, the patron saint and patron of the village, create the impression of an old historic village. The commerce is united with Anaerochris.
The church bears the name of Saint Megalomartyra Minas and celebrates on November 11th and was built on the foundations of an ancient temple in the year 1815.
The rhythm of the temple is a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof.
The greatest wealth of the church is its hagiographies that are distinguished in mobile and immovable and divided into four categories.
a) Byzantine style dating from 1540 to 1574.
b) Macedonian style, meaning mixed Byzantine art and Renaissance style, are the icons of the iconostasis dating from 1815 to 1850.
c) Images brought by the Pontians refugees in 1924 from Argyroupolis of Pontus and dating from 1905 to 1906.
d) Pictures from 1930 onwards Byzantine style.
Today, besides the Holy Temple of St. Minas, there is a faithful copy of the Galata Tower of Constantinople, a faithful copy of the Temple of God Sophia (Saint - Sophia) of Constantinople, a chapel of Agia Anastasia of Pharmamoythra within the temple of St. Minas.

Greek Easter - Good Friday the Epitaph procession
Religion is a major aspect of Greek society and therefore, Easter is one of the biggest celebrations.
The corresponding Greek word for Easter is “Lambri” meaning glorious or bright. As bright is the meaning of the resurrection of Christ, as glorious is the foretell that death is not the end.
All over the country, the most important highlights of the Holy Week are associated with the Epitaph (Epitaphios), the imitation of Christ's funeral bier.
The first ritual takes place on Good Friday morning where the Epitafios, is decorated by women and children with flowers they either buy or most often pick from the countryside or their own gardens. In the evening follows the mass and letter on the Epitaph procession take place. The litany through the city or village streets.

Ο ναός της Αγίας Αικατερίνης - Church of Agia Aikaterini 13th century / Thessaloniki
Ο ναός της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στη Θεσσαλονίκη, βρίσκεται στο δυτικό τμήμα της Άνω Πόλης. Θεωρείται ένας από τους πιο εντυπωσιακούς ναούς της Θεσσαλονίκης στον οποίο σώζονται ελάχιστες αλλά εξαιρετικής τέχνης τοιχογραφίες. Κτίστηκε στα τέλη του 13ου αιώνα. Ο ναός της Αγίας Αικατερίνης είναι σταυροειδής με τρούλο και περιβάλλεται στις τρείς πλευρές του από κλειστό περιστύλιο με τρούλους στις τέσσερις γωνίες του. Το 1500-1510 μετατράπηκε σε τζαμί με την ονομασία Γιακούμπ πασά.

The Church of Saint Demetrius, is the main sanctuary dedicated to Saint Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, dating from a time when it was the second largest city of the Byzantine Empire. The first church on the spot was constructed in the early 4th century AD, replacing a Roman bath. A century later, a prefect named Leontios replaced the small oratory with a larger, three-aisled basilica. Repeatedly gutted by fires, the church eventually was reconstructed as a five-aisled basilica in 629–634. This was the surviving form of the church much as it is today. We really enjoyed our visit. The music we used is In The Age of Steam by Mark Darnell.
