Known in the local vernacular as the Red Church, the city’s best-known Catholic building was constructed between 1908 and 1910 on the orders of a rich Belarusian family upon the premature death of their two children after whom the church is dedicated. The two smaller towers are named after the offspring, while the larger one represents the grief of the parents. Under the Soviets the church was turned into a cinema then a film studio. Now once again used for its original purpose, the building adds a nice splash of history to an otherwise modern square. The bronze statue in front of the church represents Archangel Michael slaying the Devil, represented as a dragon. Also of interest is the so-called Nagasaki Bell, a replica of the one that used to hang in Nagasaki’s Urakami Cathedral before it was destroyed in the nuclear attack on August 9, 1945.

The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, arrived in the Belarussian capital of Minsk on Saturday, where he intends to consecrate a church in honour of All Saints and hold a meeting of the Holy Synod.
Upon the Patriarch’s arrival, Kirill said: “We have to solve a lot of important issues, including responding to what is happening in the family of Orthodox Churches today, and to the situation in Ukraine.”
“I hope that the Orthodox Church will find the strength to overcome the crisis that exists, to preserve its unity, so necessary for the spiritual rebirth of our people,” he added.
Earlier, the Head of the Orthodox Church Bartholomew recognised the independence of breakaway Ukrainian Orthodox churches from the Moscow Patriarchate.

It’s God’s Help That Makes Me Strong
What is it that keeps me going?
It’s God’s help that makes me strong.
I’d be dead now and forever
Save for Mother Church alone.
Here is what you’ve got to know:
God the Father, Church the Mother.
Her Seven Sacraments are a way for the foe
To break his teeth.
It’s a fact that we can say:
Each man’s weak in certain way.
But when we pray together,
In a clenched fist we gather.
Oftentimes we cannot stand
Troubles drowning our head.
We believe: the Light of Love of Christ
won’t let us perish.

Belarus: Step by Step
Communists thought that religion was a prescientific superstition that had no function once the communist society was fully established. Years of communist terror and relentless attacks on the Church led atheism to penetrate deeply in Belorussian society with the consequent disappearance of religious life. Churches were closed or converted into culture houses or pubs. The smallest act of faith was suppressed, and met with on-going acts of repression and retribution. For decades, despite their great desire, Belorussian Catholics were not allowed to pilgrimage to the national shrine of Our Lady of Budslav – famous for its miracles and the patron of Belarus. The pilgrimage movement in Belarus started only again with the fall of the Iron Curtain in the 1990's. At that time, only 30 to 40 people participated in the pilgrimage. Today Budslav is experiencing a revival with thousands visiting the shrine reflecting the larger return to faith in Belorussia.
