Church of our lady of the rosary- Goa
One of the earliest churches to be built in Goa, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary bears an inscription on the conquest of Goa in 1510 by Afonso de Abuquerque. The church has been built by Alfonso de Albuquerque and its facade has the appearance of a fortress with openings in its wall to visualize invaders. The only complete structure in old Goa, it is a beautiful amalgamation of renaissance and Gothic architectures, consisting of 3 chapels and 2 altars, meant for silent prayers.
A truly fine example of Manueline style architecture of the early Portuguese, the interiors are quite simple and the altar bears the image of Our Lady of the Rosary or Nossa Senhora de Rozario. Located near the Basilica of Bom Jesus, it is on the western side of the Holy Hill of Old Goa.
Every year in the month of November the church holds a feast with traditional processions and novenas and the family responsible for the celebration of the feast, paints the church. The feast celebrations include grand fireworks, dance performances, Konkani concerts and fashion shows.

Panjim Church | Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church | Goa Church
#panjimchurch#ourladyoftheimmaculateconceptionchurch#goa
The Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located in Panjim, Goa, India. The Church conducts mass every day in English, Konkani, and Portuguese.
The colonial Portuguese Baroque style church was first built in 1541 as a chapel on a hill side overlooking the city of Panjim. It was eventually replaced by a larger church in the 1600s as part of Portuguese Goa's religious expansion. This church houses the ancient bell that was removed from the Augustinian ruins of the Church of Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora da Graça) in the once famed city of Old Goa. This bell is considered to be the second largest of its kind in Goa, surpassed only by the Golden Bell which resides in the Sé Cathedral in Old Goa.
History :
A chapel was first built in Panaji in 1541, to serve the religious needs of Portuguese sailors at their first port of call in colonial Portuguese India. At that time the settlement was a small fishing village. It became a Parish in 1600, and in 1609 the small chapel was replaced by the present day large church to minister to the residents and sailors.
n the 18th century the stairways, in a symmetrical zigzag form, were added to the church. The second largest church bell in Goa was installed in a bell tower in 1871. It was formerly at the Augustinian Monastery on Holy Hill, and was retrieved after the monastery was damaged.
Location:
The church is located in Panjim and sits atop a hill facing the square below. The city's municipal garden (Garcia da orta) lies to its southeast and can be seen from atop the hill. The site was once the location of a colonial port landing where ships sailing from Lisbon made first call, and where sailors disembarked before they proceeding further inland to Ela (now Old Goa) - the capital of Goa until the 19th century.A laterite stone walkway with ziz-zag stairs ascend the church while lines of thin and tall palm trees form part of the scene.
Architecture:
The exterior facade of the church, rich with Portuguese Baroque style architectural elements is painted a bright white to signify the Immaculate virgin, Mary. The tall belfry centered atop the facade houses the bell from the Augustinian Monastery.
he imposing façade is distinctive with its two towers and centrally placed taller belfry. It can be seen from a great distance and is often known as the ‘crown’ of Panjim.[7] The church is laid out in the orthodox cruciform fashion with a nave and a transept. The steps are possibly remodeled after the Nossa Senhora da Peneda Sanctuary in Penada and the Bom Jesus do Monte church in Braga, Portugal.
Festival:
During the Festival of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, held every year on 8 December, the church is colourfully illuminated. A fair is also part of this festival.

Our lady of the mount church (Old Goa) Best viewed in HD Resolution
Situated as it is atop the Monte near the Church of St. Cajetan, it overlooks the expanse of the Mandovi and the islands of Devar and Chorao.
Although its secluded location often leads to this little church being overlooked, it is certainly worth a stop on a tour of Velha Goa (Old Goa). With simple exteriors, lavish interiors and wealth of historical significance, this chapel is what one might call a hidden treasure. Its plain whitewashed walls present a delightful picture at sunset, and the view from its vantage point is truly breath taking.
It is on the top of the “Monte” that the chapel of Our Lady of the Mount” was built soon after the conquest of Goa to mark the site from where Adil Shah positioned his artillery against the Portuguese forces to retake Goa in 1510. So when Afonso de Albuquerque defeated the Sultan’s forces, he made a vow to construct a church at the very strategic point on the mount. The church was constructed in 1519 and has been rebuilt twice since.

The church was one of the first to be built in Goa, certainly being there by 1541.
The early church was completely re-built from its foundations in 1619 and this was even considered, taking accountof the still negligible population of the area and the size of the new church, is a striking commentary on the religious climateof the time and the wealth available to the churches.

Let's visit, The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a Catholic church built in 1544–1547, the oldest church still standing in Old Goa, State of Goa, India. This church is part of the collection belonging to the World Heritage Site of churches and convents of Goa.
According to the legend, a small chapel was built in honor Our Lady of the Rosary as per orders of Afonso de Albuquerque, after he had received the message that Goa was conquered in 1510 by the Portuguese. This small chapel is said to have been designed, according to Gaspar Correia, by master-builder Antão, Nogueira de Brito on the Monte Santo (Holy mountain) in Goa.
Well 30 years later, many people were already living in Monte Santo and the Portuguese rulers recognized that settlement needs to establish a separate parish with its own Church. However, for the construction of the Church itself, here is a little information, it will be 1543 initiated – together with the Church of Our Lady of the Candles (Portuguese: Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz) and the Chapel of Santa Catarina (Portuguese: Capela de Santa Cantarina). Thus, Goa was the capital of the Portuguese colony, the three parishes with three churches.
The church of Our Lady of the Rosary built in 1544–1547 in fulfilment of a vow taken by Afonso de Albuquerque, that to the knowledge of the conquest of the city of Goa. It would have promised to build a chapel in honor Our Lady of the Rosary in the place where it was and is, at the top north-west of Monte Santo, near the road between Old Goa and Panaji. A letter from the municipality to the Portuguese king João III dated 1548, another letter in turn dated 1549 should prove that the Church resulted from the enlargement of the original chapel, that the Church was new built.
The information about this construction is not clear, but according to a document dated1774, the officers of the kingdom were in the church. In a letter of 1548, to the king João III of Portugal, the members of the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Rosary seem to indicate that the current church resulted from the enlargement of the chapel the original.
In 1843 Panaji (New Goa) officially became the administrative headquarters of Portuguese India, replacing the city of Goa (which gradually came to be known as Old Goa or Goa Velha) and then renamed to New Goa. Due to church's location, it is located relatively far outside of the original city centre of Old Goa – this church has not been changed in the church status since their building is de facto. In the course of the transfer of the capital from Old Goa to High building New Goa (today is Panaji), the Church importance was lost.
The church was renovated in 1897–1899.
In 1986 the UNESCO declared the Church as part of the ensemble monasteries and churches of Goa, a world heritage site. In the Portuguese monument database of the Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitectónico, which also includes monuments of the former Portuguese colonies, entered this Church with the number 11444. In the database of the Archaeological Survey of India it is registered with the number N-GA-6.
