Victorias Vlog || Angry Christ || Unfinished Cathedral || VMC
During our second week we took a short bus trip to Victorias in Northern Negros Occidental. While not a well known tourist location, there are many important cultural sites in Victorias including the Victorias Milling Company (VMC). Sugarcane is the most important crop in this region of the Philippines and VMC processes more sugar than anywhere else in the Philippines. It is a part of life in some way or another for many people living on the island. Other important locations include the local church built for factory workers and the unfinished cathedral. This is one of several places we visited which showcases the cultural heritage of the Negrense and is only a snapshot of what Negros Island is. We recommend getting outside of the ordinary tourist spots like beaches and resorts to see the deeper side of what makes the Philippines the way it is.

Ossorio mural in Bacolod, Philippines
Alfonso Ossorio's jaw-dropping mural at the St. Joseph the worker parish inside Victoria Mills, more commonly called Angry Christ. I, however, disagree with that description because when you gaze at His eyes, what you will see is tenderness... love, not anger.

Alfonso Ossorio Mural in the Chapel of St. Joseph
Virtually unknown to many Negrense artists had touched the international scene long before the art organization in Negros was established. Alfonso Ossorio, a Filipino American negrense, the son of Don Miguel Jose Ossorio and Maria Paz Yangco who owned Victorias Milling Company. The biggest sugar refinery in Asia. His close association with Jackson Pollock and Jean de Buffet made him part of parcel of the art movement they called abstract expressionism, a movement which brought a heavy contribution to the art and science in America. In the same way Ossorio contributed to establishment of another movement known as Art Brut. His creation of a Mural popularly known as the Angry Christ in the Chapel of St. Joseph the Worker lift a permanent landmark in the history of art scene in Negros and in the Philippines as well.
In my up close experience of the mural the title 'The Angry Christ' is an ironic description of the painting Christ is not angry at all but a figure of a welcoming the father to a repenting son, as seen in the gesture of his open arms.
In my interpretation Ossorio perceived Christ as a universal savior, a messiah that transcends the boundaries of race, religion and can be mistaken as a Hindu guru or Buddhist monk. Negrense artist comes along way in the art arena. Some make it to the national level and others in the international scene.

San Jose Del Monte Philippines Organic Farm part 2 of 3 Floating Nipa Hut
Cris Bamboo and I arrive at the San Jose Del Monte Philippines Organic Farm of Reynaldo S. San Pedro, the mayor of San Jose Del Monte Philippines. Here we video the mayor's conference center and floating Nipa Hut.
Here you can see some of the larger structures built by Cris Bamboo. Both the Conference center ans the floating Nipa Hut were built by Cris. There was also a Nipa Hut on the island, however, we did not have access to it at this time. Notice the decorative flowers and planting here.
This place was beautiful. This truly depicts the beauty of the Philippines country life. You will also see the netted areas in the lake where Talapia fish are farmed. This is a very nice all in one food producing farm.I thank Hon. Reynaldo S. San Pedro and Cris Bamboo for a chance to make this video.
I have blog . It has some pictures to complement many of the videos, sometimes extended articles and some videos not publicly released on YouTube. If you enjoy our YouTube Channel I am quite sure you will enjoy the blog.
Thank You and Stop on by and say Hello.
