Beautiful Sainte-Mère-Église Church, Normandy, France By Drone in 4K.
Sainte-Mère-Église lies in a flat area of the Cotentin peninsula known locally as le Plain.
The Plain is bounded on the west by the Merderet River and by the English channel to the east, and by the communes of Valognes and Carentan to the north and south, respectively. Besides Sainte-Mère-Église, the Plain's other major town is Montebourg, and its coast includes Utah Beach.
A well-known incident involved paratrooper John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), whose parachute caught on the spire of the town church, and could only observe the fighting going on below. He hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and rejoined his division when US troops of the 3rd Battalion, 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment attacked the village, capturing thirty Germans and killing another eleven.

The Church of Sainte Mere Eglise
It’s hard to imagine this serene town as ravaged by war. The paratrooper memorial on the Sainte Mere Eglise church is kept in place year round as a reminder to all who see it of the bravery of these selfless men.
This amazing video was shot by our pre-production cinematrogpher, Vincent Shade, on a beautiful September day last fall. Believe it or not, there is no color-correction done or filters used on this video. What you are seeing is what we actually saw that spectacular September day. Normandy is stunning. Put it on your bucket list!

U.S. Army Europe
This year marks the 74th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 - most commonly known as D-Day. An epic multinational amphibious and airborne operation, D-Day forged partnerships and reinforced transatlantic bonds that remain strong today. Overall, U.S. service members from 20 units in Europe and the U.S. will participate in events and ceremonies May 30 - June 7, 2018, in almost 40 locations throughout the Normandy region of France as part of Joint Task Force Normandy 74.

Sainte-Mere-Eglise Church with Parachute Memorial and the city Hall
John M. Steele was the American paratrooper who landed on the pinnacle of the church tower in Sainte Mere Eglise on D-DAY.
D-Day Paratrooper on church steeple Sainte Mere Eglise, France
Video shot in 1999 of the church in Sainte Mere Eglise, France (Normandy), where an American paratrooper got hung up while parachuting into the village the morning of June 6, 1944 during the American invasion of Normandy in World War II. The village left a representation of this hanging from the steeple in honor of the paratroopers who liberated their village from occupying Germans.

The Angels Of Sainte Mere Eglise - Larry Whitler
This is a song I wrote that tells the story of Private John Marvin Steele who was a Paratrooper in World War II and fought in the battle at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France, in Normandy, on D-Day. Pvt. Steele's parachute became caught on a church steeple and he remained there for several hours while witnessing his comrades being shot out of the air. Here are the words to the song:
The Angels Of Sainte-Mere-Eglise
by Larry Whitler
John Marvin Steele
Had a story to tell
From the north part of France
In Normandy
In the early hours of D-Day
Preparing to jump
Je suis American----
Je suis American---
The people of Sainte-Mère-Église
Remember that day in their hearts
And their streets
The liberation of Normandy
Vive la France
Nous somme libre---
Nous somme libre---
And the bells tolled
And the guns fired
And a barn burned down
And from the light of the fire
Hitler's Nazis were pickin' 'em off
As they fell into town
The 505th Parachute Infantry
Left their blood on the ground---
John Marvin Steele
Drifted down to that hell
Where the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église
Kept him from meeting a certin death
Down in the street
Gloire 'a Dieu---
Gloire 'a Dieu---
And the bells tolled
And the guns fired
And Private Steele hung on
For his life
Hitler's Nazis could not hold them off
And they met their defeat
Heaven in France was returned
To the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église
And the bells continue to toll
And the children run free in the streets
And a mannequin trooper hangs from the church
In John Marvin Steele's memory
And the bells toll
And they live their lives in peace
Heaven on earth in the north part of France
For the angels of Sainte-Mère-Église
Saint Mere Eglise Square
The mad Irish guide shows us some cool stuff! Come here in the 'off' season. Busy as Hell during June. Great Airborne Museum just across the town square.
Church in Sainte-Mere-Eglise
Inside the church where John Steele's parachute was caught on the steeple during the June 6, 1944 invasion Normandy. This was a topic of the movie and book The Longest Day.
The Longest Day - St.Mere Eglise
One of my favorite scene in the Longest Day when Charlie Company of the 82nd Airborne over shoots their DZ (drop zone) and they land under fire in the town square of St.Mere Eglise. While the fighting goes on Pvt.John Steele is tangled in his parachute hung on to the church watching his fellow paratroopers get killed. I added music and new sound fx.

The town of Sainte Mere Eglise, was liberated by American paratroopers on D Day (6th June 1944). The church tower in the centre of town is particularly famous for being where John Steele ( got his parachute caught up and he was left dangling there as the battle raged in the streets below him.
