Rostov-on-Don in Russia, one of the oldest in the country and a tourist center of the Golde
Rostov (Russian: Ростов; IPA: [rɐˈstof]; Old Norse: Rostofa) is a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, one of the oldest in the country and a tourist center of the Golden Ring. It is located on the shores of Lake Nero, 202 kilometers (126 mi) northeast of Moscow. Population: 31,792 (2010 Census);[4] 34,141 (2002 Census);[7] 35,707 (1989 Census).[8]
While the official name of the town is Rostov, it is popularly known to Russians as Rostov Veliky (Russian: Ростов Великий, Rostov the Great) to distinguish it from much larger city of Rostov-on-Don, and the name of the town railway station is Rostov Yaroslavsky, due to its position in Yaroslavl Oblast.
he central square of Rostov is occupied by the Assumption Cathedral. It is unknown when the present building was erected, the mid-16th century being the most likely date. Lower parts of the cathedral walls are dated to the 12th century. The ponderous bell-tower was constructed mostly in the 17th century. Its bells are among the largest and most famous in Russia - each has its own name. The largest bell, cast in 1688, weighs 32,000 kilograms (71,000 lb). It is named Sysoy to honor the city's founding father.
An area situated between the cathedral square and the lake was chosen by Iona Sysoevich as a place for his fairy-tale residence. All the construction works were carried out between 1667 and 1694. Major buildings include the ornate Savior Church-na-Senyakh (1675), the sombre Church of St. Gregory (1670), and the barbican churches of St. John the Apostle (1683) and of the Resurrection of Christ (1670). The residence, often erroneously called kremlin, also includes eleven ornate tower bells, numerous palaces, several small belfries, and the diminutive baroque Church of Our Lady of Smolensk (1693). All the churches are elaborately painted and decorated.
The cathedral and four tall kremlin churches with their silver blind domes were imitated throughout the city. This is particularly evident in the Savior-on-the-Market church and the cathedral church of the Nativity convent, both dating from the 17th century and situated near the kremlin walls. The oldest church within the town center was consecrated to St. Isidore the Blessed in 1565. They[who?] say that Ivan the Terrible had the architect executed, because his church was so much smaller than its predecessor.
The kremlin is flanked by two monasteries, both facing the Lake Nero. To the right from the kremlin stands the Abraham monastery, founded in the 11th century and one of the oldest in Russia. Its cathedral, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1553 to commemorate the conquest of Kazan, inspired numerous churches in the region, particularly in Yaroslavl.
Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery, situated to the left from the Kremlin on the town's outskirts, has been venerated as the shrine of St. Dmitry of Rostov. Most of the monastery structures were built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the fine neoclassical style. There are also two 17th-century churches: the Conception of St. Anna, and the Transfiguration of Our Savior. Unlike most other churches in the town, the monastery belongs to the Russian Orthodoxy and houses a theological seminary.

I went to Kaisan, an island about one and a half hours south of Kazan. Many visitors are looking for a place in the town of Uspenski, a place on the island of Svijashsk. The church is said to be a place to visit even if it is not a Russian Orthodox believer like Myeongdong Cathedral in Korea. It is because of the fortified city of Sviyashsk that it is famous between the Volga and Svija rivers, near Suviyashvsk. The fortress is said to have been built in just four weeks at the time of the occupation of Ivan IV, when the Ivan IV emperor established the throne and ruled the Tsar and extreme terrorism. In order to enter the Church of Svijašsk, your body and mind must be clear and tidy. You do not have to wear a towel on your head and wear shorts. So they're dressed. Women can only go in a scarf to wear a veil that covers their head and chest. The Church of Svijašsk is a unique structure that retains the style of the time when the Orthodox Church of Greece was spread to Russia. This church shows the early days of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world, with about 50 million Russian Orthodox believers currently in Russia. I prayed for the health of my family and the future of my children. I wish everyone was healthy.

Saint Dimitry of Rostov was a leading opponent of the Caesaropapist reform of the Russian Orthodox church promoted by Feofan Prokopovich. He is representative of the strong Ukrainian influence upon the Russian Orthodox Church at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.Demetrius is sometimes credited as composer or compiler of the first Russian opera, the lengthy Rostov Mysteries of 1705, though the exact nature of this work, as well as its place in history, is open to debate.

Easter 2019 in Russia. Russian and other Christian Churches in Vladivostok
Hello again, friends! In this video, we will tell you about Easter in Russia and show you Russian & other Churches in Vladivostok.
There are about 40 Russian Orthodox chapels in Vladivostok. Nowadays the biggest one is:
• Russian Orthodox Church Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God at Pokrovsky Park.
Another one is
• CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
• ST. PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH
April 28, 2019, is Orthodox Easter Day in Russia, a holiday so important people celebrated it even during the atheist
Soviet era. To this day Russians observe many Easter traditions, just the way their ancestors did. Although there are no Easter bunnies or chocolate eggs, celebrations involve unique and beautiful customs—here are some of them.
Easter in Russia is called Paskha (Пасха). The name presumably derives from the Jewish holiday of Pesach, which was dedicated to the release of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Another origin theory says it comes from the Greek phrase “I suffer”. In accordance with Christian tradition, the word signifies transitioning with Christ from death to eternity and from earth to heaven.
It’s a shifting holiday
Russian Easter shifts from year to year because it falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon. Paskha is usually celebrated later than Catholic Easter, because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the old Julian calendar, unlike the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, which have been using the Gregorian calendar since the 16th century.
People fast before Easter
Paskha is preceded by 40 days of Great Lent, the most important event in the Orthodox church year. Those who observe it are not supposed to eat meat, dairy and, on some days, even vegetable oils. On the last Friday before Easter (Good Friday), no food or drink should be consumed until the evening.
Easter requires preparation
Russians are supposed to do all their pre-Easter chores during the last week before the holiday, also known as the Holy Week. Houses should be thoroughly cleaned before “Clean Thursday”, which is when Russians dye and decorate eggs.
On Saturdays, everyone cooks traditional Easter food and those who fast are not allowed to taste it while cooking. It is also common to bless the food at church during the night service.
Easter customs
In Russia, the Easter church service starts on Saturday evening and lasts until dawn. This is usually an impressive ceremony with candle lights and liturgical chants attended even by those who don’t attend mass frequently. At midnight, the bells are rung to announce the resurrection of Christ; the priest says “Christ is risen!” and parishioners are supposed to respond with “He is truly risen!”
Traditional food is still popular
On Easter morning most families in Russia, no matter how religious they are, will probably enjoy a traditional breakfast of eggs, kulich (кулич)—a special kind of yeast bread, and paskha—a pyramid-shaped cake made of cottage cheese and raisins. Even though food stores offer ready-made kulichi and paskhas, many people prefer to make them using family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.
There’s a special greeting
Russians rarely stay at home on Easter; this holiday is all about family gatherings and festive dinners. So throughout the day people exchange Easter eggs, kiss each other on the cheek three times, and often say “Christ is risen!” to each other, responding with “He is truly risen!”
Easter lasts 40 days
The first week after Easter is considered holy, during this period church services are held with their holy doors open—symbolizing Christ opening the kingdom of heaven to all people. In fact, the 40-day period between Easter and Ascension Day is referred to as paschal (пасчал).

Russia - Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl is a city located 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The historic part of the city, a World Heritage Site, is located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers. It is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history.
The most well-known building in the city is the 'Spaso-Preobrazhensky' ('Transfiguration of the Savior') Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. This monastery was founded in the 12th century. The Transfiguration Cathedral itself is built in 1516.
Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin. The monastery is surrounded by a thick 16th century, white-painted wall, complete with watchtowers and embattlements. Within these walls stand the magisterial churches, which, with their asymmetrically-ordered towers and beautifully decorated interiors, make for wonderful examples of traditional Russian sacral architecture.
[
St. John the Baptist Church in Yaroslavl is considered to be the acme of the Yaroslavl school of architecture. It was built in 1671-1687 on the bank of Kotorosl river.
Its walls and dome drums are covered with richly glazed tiles. The entire interior is covered with frescoes depicting Christian saints, St. John the Baptist hagiography and biblical topics. They were painted by Dmitry Plekhanov and Fyodor Ignatyev in 1694-1695.

Dmytri Stepanovych Bortniansky (1751–1825) was a composer and conductor of Ukrainian origin. Contemporary of Ludwig van Beethoven in Western Europe, he was one of the Golden Three of his era in the East of the continent, along with Artemy Vedel and Maksym Berezovsky. Bortniansky composed in many different musical styles, including choral compositions in French, Italian, Latin, German and Church Slavonic.
Russia River Cruising with Scenic | David Whitehill in Uglich
For more information visit:
Read below for full transcript:
Our Scenic journey sets sail in Moscow and now lands us in one of Russia's oldest towns Uglich.
Leaving the business of Moscow behind Scenic give you the chance to come and have a look at some of the smaller towns here in Russia.
Where tradition is strong the people are absolutely lovely and if you pay with cash there's some cracker deals.
Yep these are the not-so-secret locations that let you save some money and give you a chance to get to know the locals.
David: “and you love all the tourist boats coming in and all the tourists from around the world coming to visit you?”
Tatiana: “I love all the tourists you see and just we even just happy when we see foreigners and when I hear the words oh I have got what I was looking for you see that is the best”
David: “this is the place to shop”
Uglich is a pretty town, with a pretty dark history this was where the son of the first Russian Tsar was murdered and as you can imagine started a pretty serious uproar, the Church of St Dmitry is his legacy.
They were such hard times back then that even the bell was punished for being rung at the time of his death and it was exiled to Siberia for three centuries.. well I guess it won't do that again.
Just a stone’s throw up the Volga River is the world heritage-listed Yaroslavl; an open-air Museum of Russia's colourful past.
The history that surrounds some of these places you get to visit is absolutely incredible, I mean Yaroslavl has just celebrated its 1000th birthday.
The art frescoes in the Elijah cathedral are some of the best preserved in Russia and get this it's only ever been washed once but somehow it's kept its magic, possibly a bit of divine intervention?
This little town is named after Yaroslavl the wise now he's very educated man that's a given but what he was really smart at is that he married his three daughters of to the French the Norwegian and the Hungarian Kings. Now that is how you make some pretty serious allies..
Allies to protect you and your town for centuries.
While we're cruising between ports Scenic give you the chance to try some of the more traditional crafts like matryoshka dolls and these are meant to be our masterpiece, Billy yours is looking alright
Are you happy with that?
I would be concerned I’m the only woman in this
Not woman
I'll tell you now the matryoshka doll competition is not for the faint-hearted.. too much?
The Scenic Tsar is your home away from home while you’re here in Russia and this boat was specifically designed for this kind of cruising.
This technology you and I wouldn't even understand its luxuriously appointed for the more sophisticated among us.
And your private deck is well.. private.
This is one of the newest vessels in Russia so expect the bes, comfort is everything and you can even check in on the captain to make sure it's smooth sailing all the way to St. Petersburg.

You will get to see in order of appearance: the oddly Martian looking Rumyantsevskiye Hills, the Kulikova Battlefield and its bright white Museum, The Sergius of Radonezh Cathedral on Red Hill, the Tula Kremlin, Downtown Tula, the tiny village of Monastyrshino and its bright red church, the “Equestrian Courtyard” which offers horse and buggy tours of the Kulikovo area, the black and gold Dmitry Donskoy Column, the Tula State Museum of Arms, the Octava Cluster, the hip and trendy Iskra District, the rather uniquely designed Defenders of the Heavens of the Fatherland Memorial.
We had a great time in Tula and it is only two hours by train or car from Moscow, so what are you waiting for? Give Tula (the arms capital of Russia) a shot.
