Quedlinburgs architektonisches Erbe steht seit 1994 auf der UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes und macht die Stadt zu einem der größten Flächendenkmale in Deutschland. In der historischen Altstadt mit ihren kopfsteingepflasterten Straßen, verwinkelten Gassen und kleinen Plätzen befinden sich 1200 Fachwerkhäuser aus sechs Jahrhunderten. Am Markt liegt das Renaissance-Rathaus mit der Roland-Statue, südlich davon der Schlossberg mit der romanischen Stiftskirche und dem Domschatz als Zeugnisse des Quedlinburger Damenstifts. Auch der Münzenberg mit der romanischen Klosterkirche St. Marien und im Tal dazwischen die romanische St. Wiperti, der sich anschließende Abteigarten und der Brühl-Park gehören zum Weltkulturerbe.
Zur Zeit des Dritten Reiches wurde die Tausendjahrfeier (936--1936) des Todestages König Heinrichs I. von den Nationalsozialisten in Gestalt der SS als ein propagandistisches Geschenk angesehen. Heinrich Himmler entwickelte ab 1936 einen Kult um den König, dass er selbst als eine Reinkarnation Heinrichs angesehen wurde, was ihm geschmeichelt haben soll, wie sein Leibarzt Felix Kersten berichtet. In Quedlinburg wurden die Wipertikrypta und die Kirche St. Servatii beschlagnahmt und zu Weihestätten der SS umfunktioniert. Himmlers persönliches Erscheinen (bis 1939) zu den jährlichen Feierlichkeiten am 2. Juli, die bis 1944 stattfanden, wurde zum Beispiel 1937 propagandistisch mit Nachrichten über das Auffinden der verlorenen Gebeine Heinrichs I. aufgewertet.

Quedlinburg's Old Town encompasses an area of some 80 hectares, all of which has been listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. An outstanding example of a European city of medieval origin which has been preserved throughout the centuries, Quedlinburg is distinguished by its exceptional architectural heritage of Romanesque and half-timbered buildings, many of remarkably high quality. Buildings of all styles and epochs make Quedlinburg the perfect place to study the development of half-timbered building techniques and styles throughout the ages.
Quedlinburg was at the heart of the East Franconian Empire at the time of the Saxon dynasty - the rule of the Ottonians. Founder of the Saxon Dynasty was King Henry I., elected by the assembled dukes of the German tribes and crowned in 919. Quedlinburg`s Castle-Hillbecame one ofhis favorite seats of residence. Thus it was here that he was laid to rest after his death in 936. In that same year and on the same hill, his widow Mathilde established a ladies' convent, endowed by Henry`s successor, Otto I. (the Great), with considerable wealth and political influence. The collegiate church of St. Servatius on a hill above the old town is an architectural masterpiece which also houses a famous collection of church treasures. St. Servatius and the thousand-year-old Wiperti Church in the nearby fields, together with the remains of a Monastery of St. Mary on the neighboring Münzenberg hill still reflect the prestige that Quedlinburg enjoyed as political and cultural metropolis of the German empire at a time when German lands were stillin the process of evolution into what was to become their later political fabric.
The Old Town of Quedlinburg with its 1,200 half-timbered houses from six centuries and its medieval urban profile offer an extraordinary example of a medieval European city. The collegiate church, St. Servatius, with the graves of the first German King Henry I. and his wife Mathilde together with the recently returned church treasures constitute a Romanesque architectural masterwork.
Quedlinburg Germany Castle Views UNESCO world heritage site
Quedlinburg, former royal palatinate and member of the Hanse League, is a charming mediaeval city, over 1000 years old. It lies to the North of the Harz mountains. Its fascination derives from its narrow winding lanes covered with ancient cobble-stone and its spacious squares ringed by half-timbered buildings, and dominated by the massive sand-stone mound which bears the castle and the Romanesque Collegiate Church of St. Servatius.
This is where Germany's history began more than 1000 years ago.
At the foot of the castle-hill, Saxon Duke Henry is to have been offered the RoyalCrown in 919. He and his successors made the Quedlinburg palatinate an important centre of imperial politics. Henry I was buried here in 936. On the hill, his widow Queen Mathilde founded a Ladies' Convent which continued to exist for nearly 900 years. A priceless church treasure still reflects the splendour of the Ottonian dynasty. The halls and chambers of the former Convent now hold the Castle-Museum, featuring exhibitions on the history of town and convent, and still awing the visitors with their dignified ambiance.
The greatest attraction in fact is Quedlinburg in its entirety. Some thirteen hundred half-timber buildings arrange themselves at the foot of Castle-Hill in quasi organic patterns on an area of about 80 hectares. Richly decorated facades exhibit the historic development of the half-timber architecture - like in a picture-book.
The completeness of this historic townscape is unique among Germany's timber-frame towns, justifying its selection in 1994 to be listed as one of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage sites.

Quedlinburg, in the Land of Sachsen-Anhalt, was a capital of the East Franconian German Empire at the time of the Saxonian-Ottonian ruling dynasty. It has been a prosperous trading town since the Middle Ages. The number and high quality of the timber-framed buildings make Quedlinburg an exceptional example of a medieval European town. The Collegiate Church of St Servatius is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque architecture.

Germany: The Town of Quedlinburg a World Heritage Site
Quedlinburg is a town located north of the Harz mountains, in the district of Harz in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Until 2007 it was the capital of the district of Quedlinburg. Some places in town with Romanesque architecture are part of the holiday route Romanesque Road, such as St Servatius' church at the castles hill, St Wigbert's church down the valley and St Maries church on the Montsion's hill (Münzenberg).
In the innermost parts of the town a wide selection of half-timbered buildings from at least five different centuries are to be found (including a 14th century structure one of Germany's oldest), while around the outer fringes of the old town there are wonderful examples of Jugendstil buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Since December 1994 the old town of Quedlinburg and the castle mount with the collegiate church are listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Quedlinburg is one of the best-preserved medieval and renaissance towns in Europe, having escaped major damage in World War II.

Fairytale Castle in Wernigerode - A weekend in the Harzgebierge - Beautifully Vlogged
Back in February, Gary and I travelled to Germany's magical Harzgebirge for my Grandma's 80th birthday. We stayed there for three days.
This is a vlog of our last day in the Harz. In the morning we re-visited the neo-Viking Gustav Adolf Stave Church. We then drove to Wernigerode, where we explored first the medieval town and then it's fairytale castle. Truly one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. Wernigerode Castle is a Schloss located in the Harz mountains above the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The present-day building, finished in the late 19th century, is similar in style to Schloss Neuschwanstein, though its foundations are much older.
We ended the day in Goslar, where we had a hot chocolate in a German Gaststätte.

ABOUT THE HARZ
The Harz is the highest mountain range in Northern Germany and its rugged terrain extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The name Harz derives from the Middle High German word Hardt or Hart - which translates to mountain forest.
The Harz Mountains is the land of German fairy tales: steep-roofed houses with tiny windows and narrow, cobblestone streets, dark forests, rushing streams and stormy mountains.
The highest mountain in the Harz is the Brocken, setting for one of the most famous scenes in Goethe's Faust.
The devil takes Faust up on the Brocken on Walpurgis Night to tempt him, where he watches a wild night of revelry among the witches and other evil creatures.
According to local legend, witches gather on April 30 every year on top of the Brocken for a German version of Halloween.
