The Pantocrator
This video describes the history and symbolism of the icon of the Pantocrator when used in the dome of Eastern Orthodox churches. Παντοκράτωρ (pantocrator) is Greek for the ruler of all. The iconic image of Christ Pantocrator was one of the first images of Christ developed in the Early Christian Church and remains a central icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

There are over 900 churches in the city of Rome, but this one is far different from all the others. Built by Andrej Obolenskij on the grounds of the Russian embassy to the Vatican, the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the city’s first Russian Orthodox place of worship in almost a thousand years. The sanctuary is unapologetically Russian in its architecture, with a massive onionshaped dome covered in turquoiseblue porcelain.
ROME — The Vatican described a solemn ceremony on Sunday for the consecration of the first parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Rome as a sign of further thawing of relations with the Russian Orthodox Church.
“We are happy that the Russian Orthodox community has a new church in the center of Rome. It is a sign that we are nearer to each other,” said Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, who attended the three-hour dedication of the Church of the Great Martyr Saint Catherine on the grounds of the Russian Embassy.
Expatriate parishioners joined a Russian delegation that included Svetlana Medvedev, wife of the Russian president, and Yuri M. Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow. Overflow spectators watched the ceremony — officiated by Metropolitan Valentin of Orenburg and Buzuluk, along with other ranking patriarchate clergy — on television screens set up in a chapel underneath the main church.
“We are very excited,” said Anja Senynets, an immigrant from Ukraine. “There is nothing like celebrating in our own language, with our own habits.”
A Russian Orthodox church has existed in a palazzo near the Termini train station since the 1930s, and Roman Catholic churches regularly host Orthodox congregations. But the green-roof, gold-domed church consecrated Sunday is the first “to look like a Russian Orthodox church is supposed to look,” said Anna Rudakova, a parishioner. Painters came from Russia to work on the traditional iconostasis, a partition inside the church depicting icons and religious scenes.

The idea for an official Orthodox church in the Italian capital dates from the 19th century, but revolution and 70 years of communism intervened. A building fund was established in 2004 whose contributors included the Russian ambassador to Italy, Alexey Meshkov, and the AC Milan soccer forward Andriy Shevchenko. The church has been open for services since October 2006.

Saintly Relics that Heals the Body and Soul
In this video are some of what the Vatican calls First Class Relics, or relics that came from the mortal body (a piece of flesh or bone) of the Saint itself. Praying, touching, or even kissing the relic is said to cure all ailments both bodily and spiritual, hence the crowd of devotees making a pilgrimage to see these treasures of the Church.

LITHUANIA: PATRIARCH OF RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AT BLESSING
Russian/Eng/Nat
The Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church and the head of the Lithuanian Catholic church held a joint blessing on Saturday in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.
Alexy II's visit commemorates the 650th anniversary of the death of three Lithuanian martyrs killed by pagans, and the 400th anniversary of the Vilnius Holy Spirit monastery the stronghold of Orthodoxy in Lithuania.
The meeting of the spiritual leaders is well-timed, taking place during a period of strained relations between the two churches.
Patriarch Alexy II greatly angered Catholics last week by proposing a bill effectively ending their practice in Russia.
The increasing tension between the Orthodox and Catholic churches was temporarily forgotten in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on Saturday.
Alexy II, Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, and Audris Joseph Bachkis, the Catholic Bishop of Lithuania, joined together to offer their benedictions to the people.
The two churches are currently engaged in a war of words since the Russian Patriarch infuriated Catholics worldwide by proposing a bill to stop the activities of various 'foreign' religions.
He proposed that those religions unable to demonstrate a continuous presence for the last 15 years would be outlawed.
Catholicism, banned in Soviet society, would have no place in Russian society under the proposals.
But this sensitive issue did not appear to put the crowds off, and around five-thousand people gathered in the streets to watch the historic ceremony.
Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas was among those receiving the blessings.
During the service the Patriarch commented on the problems and uncertainties facing Christian people in Europe.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Christian people of Europe are today faced by serious problems, both in the general and global sense, such as a sense of disappointment and uncertainty for the future.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexy II, Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church
The head of the Lithuanian catholic church said Saturday's service was a step towards a better understanding between the two religions.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think it's a very good example of the way we can stay together and pray together - so I think it's a good step towards a better comprehension between Catholic and Orthodox on the one level.
SUPER CAPTION: Bishop Audris Joseph Bachkis, Head of Lithuanian Catholic Church
The Patriarch is on the second day of his three-day trip to the Lithuanian capital.
In a cordial meeting with Lithuanian Algirdas Brazauskas on Friday, the Lithuanian President presented him with the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania for his contribution to friendship between the two countries.
And in a reciprocal gesture, Alexy II then bestowed upon Brazauskas the Order of Prince Daniel the Faithful of Moscow.
During an overcast day full of official duties, the Patriarch also laid a wreath in honour of those Lithuanians who died fighting for independence in 1991.
He then went on to a church for another remembrance service.
The solemn service commemorated the 650th anniversary of three Lithuanian martyrs killed by pagans.

The Life of Hieromartyr John of Santa Cruz, California
Fr. John Karastamatis (+1985) was a faithful priest who labored primarily in Santa Cruz, CA. Having zeal for Christ since his youth in Greece and known for his concern for others, he was ordained a priest and first served in Anchorage, Alaska, later in Vancouver, Canada, then Anaheim, Pennsylvania, and finally in Santa Cruz, California. He helped establish the St. Elias parish in Santa Cruz and ministered to the poor, the local UC Santa Cruz students, and anyone whom he could.
On May 18th, 1985, Fr. John was murdered in his church by assailants for unclear reasons. What is clear is that he was alone in the middle of the night and the church was not desecrated: the holy man was sought out and killed.
Although not yet canonized, many Orthodox Christians venerate him as a Saint and there are numerous accounts of his heavenly intercession, one of which is in this recording.
Holy Hieromartyr John, pray to God for us!
