MASCHKE: Liebeslied, played on Mason & Hamlin chapel organ
Ernst Maschke (1867-1940) was a German composer and organist. He studied with Max Bruch and was a cantor, organist and choir leader in Königsberg churches. (Königsberg is now the Russian city of Kaliningrad.) Maschke composed his Op. 15 “Trois Morceaux fantastiques” for reed organ; the set was published in Berlin in 1898, dedicated to Madame Bertha de Tresckocw. Liebeslied (Love Song) is the second piece in the set, in F major. Certain chords and progressions bring to mind the theme from “Brigadoon”… surely a coincidence! The instrument is an American chapel-model reed organ, built by the Mason & Hamlin firm of Boston in 1899. Performed by Michael Hendron; recorded 13 August 2014.
