Florida Trip 2016 - Coral Gables, Villa Vizcaya

About Coral Gables:
Coral Gables is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States, located southwest of Downtown Miami. The city was developed by George Merrick during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. The city's architecture is almost entirely Mediterranean Revival style, including the Coral Gables Congregational Church, donated by Merrick. The domed, Catholic Church of the Little Flower was built somewhat later, in a similar Spanish Renaissance style. Every house in Coral Gables is different and most of the houses were built with coral. By 1926, the city covered 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) and had netted $150 million in sales, with over $100 million spent on development. Merrick designed the downtown commercial district to be only four blocks wide and more than two miles (3 km) long.
About Villa Vizcaya:
Villa Vizcaya is the former estate of businessman James Deering. The early 20th century Vizcaya estate also includes: extensive Italian Renaissance gardens; native woodland landscape; and a historic village outbuildings compound. The landscape and architecture were influenced by Veneto and Tuscan Italian Renaissance models and designed in the Mediterranean Revival architecture style, with Baroque elements. The estate property originally consisted of 180 acres (730,000 m2) of shoreline Mangrove swamps and dense inland native tropical forests. The villa was built primarily between 1914 and 1922, while the construction of the extensive elaborate Italian Renaissance gardens and the village continued into 1923. Deering used Vizcaya as his winter residence from 1916 until his death in 1925. The estate's name refers to the northern Spanish province Vizcaya (In English Biscay), in the Basque region along the east Atlantic's Bay of Biscay, as 'Vizcaya' is on the west Atlantic's Biscayne Bay. Records indicate Deering wished the name also to commemorate an early Spaniard named Vizcaya who he thought explored the area, although later he was corrected that the explorer's name was Sebastián Vizcaíno. James Deering died in September 1925, on board the steamship SS City of Paris en route back to the United States. After his death Vizcaya was inherited by his two nieces, Marion Chauncey Deering McCormick and Ely Deering McCormick Danielson. Over the decades, after hurricanes and increasing maintenance costs, they began selling the estate's surrounding land parcels and outer gardens. In 1945 they sold significant portions of the Vizcaya property to the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida, to build Miami's Mercy Hospital. 50 acres (200,000 m2) comprising the main house, the formal gardens, and the village were retained. Vizcaya began operation in 1953 as the Dade County Art Museum.

Vox pops from Cuban-Americans attending Sunday service

2. People going inside church
3. Various of woman lighting candles inside church
4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Father Arthur Dennison, Pastor of the Church of the Little Flower:
Certainly the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, when he visited Cuba, repeatedly said of the need for human values and the need to work together, the need to structure mutually a just society, a humane society... no one knows exactly what is going on now in Havana. However, we all know eventually, maybe sooner than we think there may be a change. When the change comes, we all have to work together to form a new society, to form a society based on reconciliation.
5. Various of service
6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sergio Quintana, Vox Pop:
I don't really feel any different quite honestly. There really hasn't been any news since the announcement about a week ago, so everything is just speculation from everyone.

8. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Pedro Jimenez, Vox Pop:
It's been a very long time since he (Fidel Castro) started destroying the Cubans.
(Q: What would you say to the Catholics on the island?)
Well the Catholics they have to think like we do here, they have to agree with us that it should end up soon. It was about time!
(Q: Do you have more hope now?)
Of course I'm more hopeful, everyday a little bit more.
9. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Father Arthur Dennison, Pastor of the Church of the Little Flower:
Maybe now if there is a change we could go and develop something and create a new society with all the people together, like brothers. It's true that there are brothers here in south Florida but also in Cuba. This must be a moment for reconciliation.

STORYLINE
As Latin America's leading leftists expressed confidence on Sunday that Fidel Castro would soon return to office, some Cuban-Americans spent their day worshipping at the Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables, Florida.
Cuban officials have provided no details and released no pictures of Castro since his surgery was announced last Monday, fuelling speculation around the world about his condition.
Raul Castro, the Defence Minister, also has not been seen in public since the announcement.
Talking about an eventual post-Castro Cuba, Father Arthur Dennison, Pastor of the Church of the Little Flower, said When the change comes, we all have to work together to form a new society, to form a society based on reconciliation.
Parishioner Sergio Quintana brushed off any talk of Castro's demise as speculation.
But another church goer Pedro Jimenez said with each day that passes with no news of Castro's health I'm more hopeful, everyday a little bit more.
In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Sunday that the United States wants to help Cubans prepare for democracy but is not contemplating an invasion of the island in the wake of Castro's illness.
Still, Cuban authorities have beefed up security by mobilising citizen defence militias, increasing street patrols, and ordering decommissioned military officers to check in at posts daily.

These Dead Shall Not Have Died in Vain
Freedom! How precious and how rare it is. Most people today probably don’t know that when freedom of religion was proclaimed in the First Amendment of our Constitution, that for the first time in history a nation guaranteed full religious liberty to its citizens. And many wars have since been fought to preserve that freedom. D. James Kennedy reminds us that best way we can remember and honor those who gave their lives for this country is to maintain the freedoms for which they died. And we look at how the removal of God has wrought havoc in our schools.

Peyote: The people who take drugs to see God - BBC News
Mawaan Rizwan was brought up in a religious family but is no longer practising and feels detached from spirituality. He visits the Oklevueha Native American Church in Salt Lake City in Utah, America, where people take the Class A drug peyote in the hope of finding religious enlightenment. A powerful hallucinogen, its active ingredient mescaline puts peyote in the same category as heroin. Its effects are like that of LSD. Taking it could put someone at risk if they or a member of their family have suffered from psychosis in the past. People have been known to harm themselves while under the effects of hallucinogens. The medicine man James Flaming Eagle Mooney and Ohio-based believer Richard say taking traditional medicines like peyote connect them to a higher power. A sceptical but curious Mawaan joined them on one of their ceremonial retreats in the mountains.
