Ukraine's Largest Nativity Scene Set up in Ternopil
The largest nativity scene in Ukraine has been made in the city of Ternopil. It features massive, animated figures. The angels are flipping their wings, the tsars are walking towards baby Jesus, and the monk is drinking milk. The scene is set up at the St Peter's Cathedral in Ternopil.

Ukrainian vertep/birth ofJesus Ukrainian performance
The Vertep takes its inspiration from Chapter 2 of the Book of Matthew found in the New Testament. It highlights the Nativity scene and how King Herod found out the messiah had finally been born and how he sent his soldiers to kill all the infants in Judea.
The original meaning of the word is secret place, cave, den, referring to the cave where Christ was born, i.e., the Bethlehem. In the 17th century, the vertep arrived in the Russian Empire after the Ukrainian Cossack Hetmanate, where it was known as szopka, became a Protectoratof the empire in 1654 (it was formally part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth).
The Vertep began in the latter part of the 16th century and reached its popularity in the 18th century. It was primarily a puppet show practiced and developed by the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.The practice is deeply rooted in religion, and is considered the first type of street performance in Ukraine .

Щедрівка / Коляда з 15-го століття. Виконує: Василь Жданкін (з кубанських українців - народився в станиці Гурмай на Кубані) - український бард, кобзар, бандурист. Нині працює і мешкає у м. Кременці Тернопільської області, співає у церковному хорі.
Shchedrivka. Old Ukrainian carol, 15th cen. Performed by famous Ukrainian bandurist and kobzar Vasyl Zhdankin, Kremenets, Ukraine. He was born in cossack Kuban (Krasnodar land) but lives in Kremenets, Ternopil province, western Ukraine, sings in church choir.
The icon of Christ is Ethiopian / Egyptian.

Singing ancient Christmas carols in Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains
The village of Kryvorivnia is considered the capital of Ukraine’s Hutsul minority. People here have preserved Ukraine’s oldest Christmas carol tradition, which has existed since pre-Christian times. They start singing and dancing at the church, and travel around the area, singing for whole families, individual people or even animals.
