Десятинная церковь в г. Киеве, столице Украины - это первая каменная церковь Киевской Руси, которая была возведена в 988-996 годах. Храм представлял собой трипрестольную каменную церковь. Главный престол был посвящен Богородице, а другие два престола – святому Николаю и святому Владимиру. Князь Владимир выделил на содержание и строительство храма десятую часть своих доходов – десятину и отсюда и произошло название Десятинной церкви.
The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin (Ukrainian: Десятинна Церква, Desiatynna Tserkva; Russian: Десятинная Церковь, Desyatinnaya Tserkov') was the first stone church in Kiev. Originally it was built by the order of Grand PrinceVladimir (Volodymyr) the Great between 989 and 996.
Christianity was accepted by Kievan Rus' Princess Olga, the ruler of Kiev, who was baptized, taking the Christian name Helen, in 955 (or 957). Her grandson, Grand Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich or Volodymyr the Great (960-1015) was a Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and ruler of Kievan Rus' State from 980 to 1015.
Grand Prince Volodymyr is known as Russian ruler who christened (baptized) Russian people in the state Kievan Rus'.
The legend says that until the age of 28 he was a great raver and a pagan, who persecuted Christians, murdered his brother Yaropolk and seduced his wife. But early Slavic chronicle, called Tale of Bygone Years, says that Prince Volodymyr chose Christianity, or Byzantine Christian Orthodoxy, between Judaism, Islamism and Roman Catholicism, and he was christened and advanced Russian Orthodox Church within the state named Kievan Rus'. He had got more than 13 children.
Prince Vladimir was baptized at Chersonesos in 988, taking the Christian name of Basil. Returning to Kiev, he desroyed pagan monuments and established many churches, starting with a church dedicated to St. Basil, and the Church of the Tithes (989).
Prince Volodymyr and Princess Olga were venerated as the Equal-to-apostles Saints by the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Сейчас рядом с ней находятся Пейзажная аллея, музей истории Украины, Андреевская церковь и Андреевский спуск. Церковь была возведена в качестве кафедрального собора неподалеку от княжеского дома, раскопанная часть которого находится на расстоянии 60 метров от фундамента Десятинной церкви. Неподалёку археологами были найдены остатки здания, считающегося домом церковного причта (состав лиц, служащих при какой-либо одной церкви), построенным одновременно с церковью (так называемый терем Ольги). Церковь освящалась 2 раза: по завершении строительства и в 1039 году при Ярославе Мудром. Внутреннее убранство Десятинной церкви состояло из икон, крестов и драгоценных сосудов из Корсуня. В украшении интерьера был использован мрамор, за что современники также назвали этот храм «мраморным». Перед западным входом, во время раскопок, были обнаружены остатки двух пилонов, предположительно служивших постаментами для бронзовых коней, привезенных из Херсонеса. В 1169 году Десятинную церковь разграбили войска князя Мстислава Андреевича, сына Андрея Боголюбского, а в 1203 году — войска Рюрика Ростиславича. В 1240 году орды хана Батыя, взяв Киев, полностью разрушили церковь. Лишь в 1824 году, спустя 585 лет, митрополит Евгений поручил расчистить фундамент Десятинной церкви. Во время этих работ был впервые открыт план фундаментов, найдены остатки мозаик и фресок. В августе 1828 года освятили начало строительства новой церкви. Храм был построен в 1842 году в русско-византийском стиле и не повторял первоначальной архитектуры предыдущей Десятинной церкви. В 1908—1911 годах фундаменты оригинальной церкви (там где они не были застроены новым зданием), были раскопаны и исследованы. Остатки фундамента были изучены лишь в 1938—1939 годах после окончательного сноса новой церкви — при советской власти, в 1928 году, она, как и множество других памятников культуры и искусства, была снесена.
Formation of new Ukraine church independent of Moscow raises fears
(21 Oct 2018) Tensions over the imminent formation of a Ukrainian Orthodox church independent of Moscow are raising fears of fierce battles over parishes and property and an escalation of tension between the two countries.
Earlier this month, a group of young Ukrainians brought clubs and brass knuckles to the Perchersk Monastery in Kiev, one of Orthodox Christianity's most important pilgrimage sites, apparently seeking to disrupt worship.
They were stopped by police, who spread-eagled them against a wall decorated in faded centuries-old frescos of placid and solemn saints, then forced them into buses and hauled them away.
The Associated Press witnessed the incident shortly after interviewing Metropolitan Antony (Pakanich) of the Moscow-loyal Ukrainian Church at the monastery.
He told the AP that in recent years about 50 churches in Ukraine that were under the Moscow Patriarchate were forcibly seized and transferred to the Kiev Patriarchate.
Since the late 1600s, the Orthodox Church in Ukraine had been a wing of the Russian Orthodox Church rather than ecclesiastically independent - or autocephalous.
Many Ukrainians chafed at the arrangement, resenting its implication that their country was a vassal state of Russia.
Two schismatic churches formed under their own Ukrainian leaders, but they were not recognised as canonical by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the so-called first among equals of leaders of the world's Orthodox Churches.
That is about to change.
The Istanbul-based patriarchate recently removed an anathema against Ukrainian church leaders, a major step toward granting full recognition to a Ukrainian church that does not answer to the Moscow Patriarchate.
The Russian Orthodox Church reacted with fury, announcing it would no longer recognise the authority of the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Some religious leaders in Moscow warned that if there was a declaration of full ecclesiastical independence, known as a Tomos of Autocephaly, it could spark the worst schism since Orthodox and Catholic Christianity parted ways nearly 1,000 years ago.
They also fear the loss of deeply cherished sites, including the Pechersk Monastery, which is the seat of the church's Ukrainian branch and a tourist destination renowned for its richly decorated churches and labyrinthine caves holding the relics of holy men.
There are approximately 12,000 churches in Ukraine that are under the Moscow Patriarchate.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who hailed the creation of a full Ukrainian church as a guarantee of our spiritual freedom, has pledged that there will be no action against parishes that choose to remain under the Moscow Patriarchate.
A similar promise came from the leader of the larger of Ukraine's two schismatic churches, Patriarch Filaret, who said both churches should be able to co-exist in Ukraine, although he continued by warning Russia against interference,
But some nationalists appear ready to use force.
Serhiy Mazur, a leader of the ultranationalist C14 group, whose adherents twice attacked the Tithes church in Kiev, sees the presence of Moscow Patriarchate churches in Ukraine as a form of propaganda by an aggressor country.
The Russian Orthodox Church has close ties with the Kremlin and the Tithes church is the Kremlin's political tool, Mazur said.

The Epiphany, celebrated in Ukraine and Russia on January 19, marks the baptism of Jesus in the Orthodox Church. Believing that on this day water becomes holy and is imbued with special powers, Ukrainians and Russians cut holes in the ice of lakes and rivers, often in the shape of the cross, to bathe in the freezing water.
I was one of many participants in the ritual may dip themselves three times under the water, honoring the Holy Trinity, to symbolically wash away their sins from the past year, and to experience a sense of spiritual rebirth. Orthodox priests are on hand to bless the water, and rescuers are on hand to monitor the safety of the swimmers in the ice-cold water. Other less intrepid people may limit their participation in the Epiphany rites to those conducted inside churches, where priests perform the Great Blessing of Waters, both on Epiphany Eve and Epiphany (Theophany) proper. The water is then distributed to attendees who may store it to use in times of illness, to bless themselves, family members, and their homes, or to drink. Some Ukrainians think any water - even from the taps on the kitchen sink - poured or bottled on Epiphany becomes holy water, since all the water in the world is blessed this day. In the more mild climate of the southern cities of Odessa, Sevastopol, Mykolaiv, Evpatoria, Balaclava, Yalta meanwhile, where air and water temperatures both hover in the low to mid 10 degree Celsius range in January, thousands of people jump into the Black Sea at midnight each year on Epiphany and begin to swim in celebration of the feast.
First steps of Orthodox Bisantine Christianity in Kievan Rus medieval state started on the second half of 9th cent. The definitive Christianisation of Kiev dates from the late 980s (the year 986 is disputed), when Vladimir the Great was baptized at Chersonesos (Crimean peninsula), proceeding to baptize his family and people in Kiev. The place of Vladimir's baptism is marked by St. Vladimir's Cathedral (Sevastopol towm nowdays).
Returning from Crimea to Kiev in triumph, Vladimir baptised his 12 sons, guards and many nobles. He destroyed the wooden statues of Slavic pagan gods (the statue of Perun — the supreme god — was thrown into the Dnieper). Then Vladimir sent a message to all residents of Kiev, rich, and poor, and beggars, and slaves, to come to the Dniper river on the following day, lest they risk becoming the prince's enemies. Large number of people came; some even brought infants with them. They were sent into the water while Orthodox priests, who came from Chersonesos for the occasion, prayed. To commemorate the event, Vladimir built the first stone church of Kievan Rus', called the Church of the Tithes, where his body and the body of his new wife were to repose. Another church was built on top of the hill where pagan statues stood before.
By the way, Moscow [Moskva - in Slavonians transcription] was faunded, as known, in 1147 only (it was a very smal village on little island on the river Mokva [swamp - from Slavonian languages]. But Kiev was one of the biggest towns in Europe on that time.

They built churches in Russia. The three bar cross is the cross of Kyiv, Ukraine. Many Ukrainians have forgotten about these things and think they are foreign elements. The Russian church uses these traditions and call them Russian. But that doesn't mean that they are in the Muscovite sense
