How Cincinnati became the birthplace of American astronomy
How did Mount Adams get his name? Eleven-year-old Kate Langlinais wanted to know, so we went with her on a journey that led us to the oldest telescope in the United States and the inspiring story of Ormsby Macnight Mitchell, a 19th-century Cincinnatian who wanted his young country to reach for the stars.

Cincinnati is a city in Ohio, on the Ohio River. The Over-the-Rhine district is known for its 19th-century architecture, including Findlay Market, which has food and craft vendors. To the north is the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The Cincinnati Museum Center encompasses history, science and children's museums in the art deco Union Terminal. Works spanning 6,000 years are on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Cincinnati is Ohio's third largest city and the largest metro region. It lies on the north bank of the Ohio River in Southwest Ohio in the United States of America. Known as the Queen City or Queen of the West, Cincinnati was the only 19th century American city that left a favorable impression on the then 30-year-old English author Charles Dickens. “Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated,” Dickens wrote in “American Notes.” “I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favorably and pleasantly to a stranger at the first glance as this does: with its clean houses of red and white, its well-paved roads, and foot-ways of bright tile. Nor does it become less prepossessing on a closer acquaintance.”
Avondale is a primarily residential urban neighborhood near the center of the city, notable for the presence of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Hyde Park is an upscale, largely white and upper class residential neighborhood. Mt. Adams is a trendy, upscale neighborhood located directly northeast of downtown Cincinnati. Clifton, not to be confused with a nearby Clifton Heights, is also located near the city center. Mt. Washington is an up and coming economically diverse neighborhood located on Cincinnati's east side.
Northside is an economically and racially diverse neighborhood notable for a strong sense of community investment and pride. Oakley is an up and coming neighborhood that borders Hyde Park. ver-the-Rhine (OTR) is the city's historic district. Price Hill is one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, first settled in 1789 and named Price Hill in the 1870s after General Rees Price. West End the little bit that survived of this once large densely populated neighborhood would not be notable for travelers except for the Dayton Street Historic District. Riverfront/The Banks This is a newly developed area in downtown Cincinnati that falls between Great American Ballpark home of the Reds. Newport and Covington Though these neighborhoods are actually across the river in Kentucky.

Astronaut who spent nearly a year in space visits Cincinnati
WALNUT HILLS, Ohio (WKRC) - After a year in space, Astronaut Scott Kelly says it’s great to be any place with gravity. On Wednesday night, a crowd in Cincinnati was happy to spend time with him.
The Navy veteran and fighter pilot spoke at Walnut Hills High School with a captive audience.
Astronomer Dean Regas with the Cincinnati Observatory moderated the event.
“Oh I’m just as excited as everybody else. This is the first astronaut I’ve met in person. I’ve idolized John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, but to actually meet him, said Regas.
The astronaut commanded the International Space Station on three expeditions. Kelly talked about the effects of spending 340 days in space on the human body. He holds the American record for consecutive days spent in space. While he was there, Kelly's identical twin brother, Mark, remained on Earth.
“Microgravity, the effects are bone loss, muscle loss, some effects on our vision that we are trying to understand,“ Kelly said.
Kelly's new book is called, Endurance. It's not just about having to endure a year in space, but also about having the endurance to push through life. An evening with a star inspired the youngest in the crowd to reach for the stars.
You don't have to be good at something or at school. Put your mind to something, take steps, you can do it, said 13-year-old Jeremiah Ragan.
NASA says Kelly grew two inches during his time aboard the International Space Station. His body has since returned to its normal height.

Remembering John Glenn's local impact on space education
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Before John Glenn became a legend, he was just a kid from Ohio.
Glenn was born in Cambridge in 1921 and died in Columbus at age 95. For those who teach space education in the Cincinnati area Glenn was an inspirational hero. Glenn was an aviator, an engineer, an astronaut, a professor and a United States Senator, he was as many as having called, the last American hero.
Out of all the astronauts, he was my favorite,” said Dean Regas, an Astronomer with the Cincinnati Observatory. “The first American to go around the earth and then to go back out in space again as the oldest astronaut, what a life.
For Regas, growing up in Columbus he was aware of Glenn and his significance.
I think as an Ohio boy I thought that this is something that I could do with my life, that I could pursue,” said Regas.
And he did, for nearly 17 years Regas has held the Astronomer title at the Cincinnati Observatory.
A few miles northwest at the iSpace, Linda Neenan recalls when he she found out Glenn passed away.
This afternoon one of the staff members came in and said John Glenn had died. It was tough for all of us. He was just such an incredible human being,” said Neenan.
Neenan is the Executive Director of iSpace, a STEM learning place that uses space to teach science, engineering, technology and math.
We talk about all of the historical figures who helped to make the space program what it is today and of course, chief among them is John Glenn,” said Neenan.
Glenn leaves behind two children and his high school sweetheart, Annie. The two were married for 73 years.
