Birmingham: City plans 1 million sq ft of office space to rival London for business
Birmingham plans to construct more than 1 million sq ft of office space in a bid to rival London for business.
The UK's second largest city, which is home to nearly 1.1 million people, wants to turn itself into a global financial services hub by 2030.
Part of the plan for the Midlands city includes a new skyscraper at 103 Colmore Row by Sterling Property Ventures and Rockspring. Costing £60m, the 364ft structure is the tallest office building in planning outside of London.
ADVERTISING
Birmingham is home currently home to 21,000 companies employing 220,000 people, with the city's GDP estimated to be $121.1bn (£78.5bn). The city was given a boost when banking giant HSBC announced in March that it would move its ring-fenced banking operation from London to Birmingham, including the relocation of 1,000 staff.

PM Shri Narendra Modi addresses City of London from the old library, Guildhall
PM Modi:
UK and India have known each other very well since several centuries. Our system of Governance is also based largely on the Westminster model.
• Our institutions know to interact with each other;
• Our people know to work with each other;
• Our businesses know to grow with each other
That is the reason that UK is among India’s major trading partners. UK is also the third largest foreign investor in India. And I must add- this is not one sided. India has emerged as the third largest source of FDI for UK. However, there is significant potential for India and UK to further strengthen their economic ties.
We have to effectively leverage the mutual understanding which is there for each other. We are particularly keen to develop the sectors where UK is strong. We are working hard to create conducive conditions for this engagement. A strong Indian community here keeps pushing us for better and better integration with UK.
Friends! Since my Government took over, we have been working relentlessly to put the economy on track. Particularly, we have worked very aggressively to make India an easy and simple place to do business. We believe that this is necessary for improving the lives of ordinary citizens in India.
The results of our hard work are now visible. IMF Chief has recently said that India is among few bright spots in global economy today. Our growth rate in the last year was 7.3%.
The World Bank has very recently projected our growth rate at 7.5% for this fiscal and even better in the coming years. Thus, we are fortunate to be sailing in the right direction. In the World Bank Report of 2016 on ease of doing business, India has moved up by 12 ranks at one go. No other country has made such a big improvement.....

The Isabella Breviary (Flanders,15th C.) The British Library, London
The Isabella Breviary is the British Library's most highly prized treasure. This amazing manuscript was conceived of as the most luxurious Flemish breviary. Each of its pages has been masterfully illuminated by the finest Flemish painters, resulting in a lavish manuscript of peerless beauty.
The originality and impact of the miniatures in the Isabella Breviary make this a unique codex. Having more texts than a book of hours, a breviary offers illuminators a wider range of themes and consequently more artistic license and a greater variety of images. The six masters who worked on the Isabella Breviary paid particular attention to the scenes depicting the building, destruction and reconstruction of the temple and city of Jerusalem and also the celebration scenes with musicians and singers led by David. No other contemporary manuscript features a similar series.
Isabella the Catholic was given the manuscript shortly before 1497 by her ambassador Francisco de Rojas to commemorate the double marriage of her children, Infante John of Asturias and Infanta Joanna, to the children of emperor Maximilian of Austria and duchess Mary of Burgundy, Margaret and Philip. A full-page miniature shows the joint coat of arms created by Isabella and Ferdinand with a large eagle, the symbol of St John the Evangelist, and the coats of arms of the two new couples underneath.
The Isabella Breviary is of great historical importance because it reflects not only the artistic context but also the great political unrest in late-fifteenth-century Europe, a time when royal marriages meant international political alliances, territorial expansion etc.
