One of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, the building has been hailed as a signal moment in the architectural culture, because it represents one of those rare moments when critics, academics, and the general public were all completely united about something. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was the building most frequently named as one of the most important works completed since 1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among architecture experts.
The museum notably houses large-scale, site-specific works and installations by contemporary artists, such as Richard Serra's 100-meter-long (340 ft) Snake, and displays the work of Basque artists, as well as housing a selection of works from the Foundation's modern art collection. In 1997, the museum opened with The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of This Century, a 300-piece overview of 20th-century art from Cubism to new media art. Most pieces came from the Guggenheim's permanent collection, but the museum also acquired paintings by Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still and commissioned new works by Francesco Clemente, Anselm Kiefer, Jenny Holzer and Richard Serra.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was opened as part of a revitalization effort for the city of Bilbao. Almost immediately after its opening, the Guggenheim Bilbao became a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe. In its first three years, almost 4 million tourists visited the museum, helping to generate about €500 million in economic activity. The regional council estimated that the money visitors spent on hotels, restaurants, shops and transport allowed it to collect €100 million in taxes, which more than paid for the building cost.

Welcome to Bilbao!
This is a running trail in the capital of the Basque Country located in Northern Spain.
Its an autumn morning and the weather is very typical of Bilbao, a little cloudy and it has been raining a little the night before, Txirimiri, as the locals call it.
The Bilbao metropolitan area has a population of just under 1 million making it one of the major cities in Spain. With a steep history in exporting of iron, the city´s port is world famous, but the city has more recently received a serious makeover with its now most iconic building the Guggenheim Museum being built back in 1997. The riverbanks along the Nervión have been completely transformed and this trail will take you along it between both historic buildings and superb modern architecture.
Look out for the Calatrava bridge, the town hall and several points of interest, including the Guggenheim of course where a surprise is waiting!...
Bilbao cannot be visited without mention of the biggest football team in the region, Athletic Club Bilbao. The trail finishes up just near the San Mamés Stadium where the “Lions” play there games in the Spanish La Liga.
We were here in Autumn, but we would recommend this city for all seasons, mainly for the food scene (try the so called “Pintxos) which is incredible but also in early Summer when you can head to nearby Mundaka, a famous surfing spot.

BILBAO, SPAIN: DAY ONE!
This past weekend my roommate and I took on Bilbao, Spain, and this was our first day there! Bilbao is actually the fifth biggest city in Spain. It's in the northern part of Spain, in País Vasco (or Basque Country), only about a 20-minute drive from the sea. País Vasco is one of the three autonomous communities in Spain where they speak another language (Vasco, or Euskera). It's extremely different than Spanish, but luckily they also speak Spanish there. San Sebastián / Donostia - Spain’s Most Romantic City | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids
San Sebastian is a small city known as Donostia in the Basque language. Shimmering above the breathtaking Concha Bay, this elegant town has a favored location with even more famous golden beaches.
Some of the beaches of San Sebastián are the beautiful La Concha and the spacious Zurriola which is especially attractive for the surfers. Every summer a huge number of tourists flock to this town in Northern Spain to occupy every square inch. The Isla de Santa Clara is also very well known among travellers. Ferries leave a couple of times an hour for the picturesque island so it’s easily accessible.
La Playa de la Concha, is a golden sandy beach sweeping from Parte Vieja (the old town in the heart of the city) in the east, all the way to to Monte Igueldo in the west and it is a wonderful feature of this city.
It is probably, if not, the only city beach in Europe and possibly the world, you’ll want to spend a while at splashing in the sea or people watching. And let’s not forget Playa de Gros (also known as Playa de la Zurriola), a favourite with surfers.

City Break, Bilbao, October 2019
In October 2019 we decided to go for a three day break to Bilbao, Spain.
We spent the first day exploring the 'old town' and took a ride in a funicular, taking in the sights of the city.
We went to the Guggenheim Museum on day 2 (10 euro entry) which was really cool.
Finally on day 3 we had some time spare to go to the San Mames Stadium, home to Athletic Bilbao (14 euro for a tour and entry to the museum).
All in, a great city and a great break.

The Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall is located in the city of Bilbao, in the Basque Country, beside the Estuary of Bilbao, built in part of the area that was formerly occupied by the Euskalduna shipyards.
Palacio de Congresos y de la Musica Euskalduna was designed by architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios and construction started in 1994. It was inaugurated in February 1999 and contains a variety of spaces, functioning as a conference center, opera house and concert hall. In 2003 it was declared by the International Congress Palace Association as the world's best congress center. The building also won the Enric Miralles award. Euskalduna organizes and hosts a wide range of activities, including cultural, political, business, academic and social events. The main auditorium in the building has 2.164 and can host theatre, ballet, concerts, and opera. The building is equipped with storage space, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms.
Palacio de Congresos y de la Musica Euskalduna is located on the zone of Abandoibarra, near the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The building is connected to the rest of the city by EuskoTran's Line A, Bilbao Metro Lines 1 and 2 and Cercanías Bilbao lines C1 and C2. It is located in the centre of the city and activities like BAO are well-regarded. The ABAO opera season is a major event in this building. It also houses the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (BOS), founded in 1920.

The San Antón Bridge is an arch bridge in Bilbao, Spain. It spans the Estuary of Bilbao, linking the neighborhoods of Bilbao La Vieja and Casco Viejo. It is the oldest bridge in the city, with the original bridge being opened before 1318. At the time of its opening, and during centuries, it was the only bridge that crossed the river. It is located next to the Church of San Antón.
The San Antón Bridge is one of Bilbao's emblems and it is depicted on the city's coat of arms. Its origin is medieval. This bridge has a big historical importance, as the merchants were forced to use the bridge to carry their products from Biscay to Castile as it was the only bridge that crossed the river.
Several floods have pulled down the San Anton Bridge several times; to solve the problem the city hall decided to build a completely new one by the end of the 19th century. The new bridge was finished in 1880; the opening was delayed after it suffered damage on the Carlist Wars. It had to be reconstructed once more in 1937 after it was demolished on the Spanish Civil War. The 1937 reconstruction was the last one and the current bridge is from that time.

The Iberdrola Tower (Basque: Iberdrola dorrea, Spanish: Torre Iberdrola) is an office skyscraper in Bilbao, Spain. Its construction started on 19 March 2009 and was officially inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I on 21 February 2012.
The tower has a height of 165 metres (541 feet) tall and has 40 floors. The first eight floors of the tower were to hold a hotel by the Spanish hotel chain ABBA, but the project was eventually cancelled.
The hotel will be replaced by an auditorium with the capacity of 200 people. The remaining floors have an office usage. The tower, built as Iberdrola's headquarters, is the tallest building in the Basque Country and the city of Bilbao, and the eighth tallest building in Spain.
The tower was built in Abandoibarra, a former industrial area located next to the Nervión river that began to be renewed in the early 1990s and where other emblematic projects such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall have been built. There are two residential buildings designed by Carles Ferrater flanking the skyscraper. The entrance to the tower is located at the Euskadi Plaza.
