Loneliest Road in America
Recorded June 4, 2019
The most famous segment of U.S. Highway 50 is largely useless, running through Nevada about 100 or so miles south of Interstate 80, which is what sane people use today to travel the state. And yet this 287-mile stretch of highway has attained legendary status as the Loneliest Road in America. The designation was made by Life magazine in 1986 and has stuck, in good part because Nevada tourism authorities recognized what the acolytes of ruin porn have long known about the strange magic desolation works on the human spirit. There are, today, Loneliest Road signs along the road, and some stores in the sparse towns along Route 50 display I survived Route 50 signs in windows covered with geologic layers of grime.
Shortly after sunrise I depart Ely and set out across Nevada on this desolate stretch of highway. The index below contains the details of my adventure...

0:03:08 71 miles between towns

Driving a McLaren - Circuit of the Americas Austin, TX
My three laps around Circuit of the Americas, top speed allowed was 120 on the backstretch. The Ferrari in front really slowed us up at times, on third lap we held back to get some running room.
The Loneliest Road in America Highway 50 Nevada Adventure
Few places in the U.S. lower 48 states are as remote as the stretch of Highway 50 that runs through the Basin and Range of Nevada. The highway is so far off the beaten path, Life Magazine nemed it The Loneliest Road in America. Driving it west from the Utah state line, we really didn't see a lot of other vehicles. What we did see, however, was wonderful. We occasionally passed through old mining towns with names like White Pine, Eureka and Austin that had a mix of saloons, trinket shops, empty storefronts and mine tailings and abandoned mining equipment that hinted at their storied pasts. We camped in a dusty campsite that had natural hotsprings we could soak in just east of Austin. Exploring the area in our Subaru Outback -- you must have an off-road capable vehicle if you go off the highway -- we were astonished to drive 50 miles to Belmont, Nevada, only to find the designated ghost town was full of friendly and/or quirky people (mostly RVers and ATVers) preparing to celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade and other festivities on the town's unpaved main street. We also marveled at ancient, Native American petroglyphs, wild horses and mules, and the wide open sky, which is a stunner day and night. Larry Richardson created this video using a Sony FDR-AX53 camcorder for 4k video and Apple iPhone 7 for HD video. The video was edited on a Mac Book Pro using Apple Final Cut Pro X software.
Things to Do in Nevada: My Top Outdoor Activities in Reno and Lake Tahoe
We start our Reno Experience 20 minutes outside the city on one of the peaks of Sierra Nevada. Here, we join Tahoe Adventure Company for a snowshoe tour for some of the most epic views of Lake Tahoe. Next, we head to Diamond Peak Ski Resort which has some of the most scenic ski runs I’ve ever experienced. Make sure to ride the Crystal Express run to the bottom. It’s a long easy trail with stunning views of Lake Tahoe juxtaposed against the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Located less than an hour drive from Reno, it is easy to spend a day skiing Diamond Peak before heading back to Reno, which has more lodging and dining options, come evening. The small city hosts a range of hotels including Circus Circus and the Eldorado.
And while many people associate Reno mostly with casinos, there is actually quite lot more to do here than gamble. You’ll notice right away, driving down the main drag, that there’s also a giant climbing wall. At 164 feet it is the world’s largest manmade wall of its kind and is part of the just opened Basecamp rock climbing gym, which also has a 7,000-square-foot indoor component inside the Whitney Peak Hotel. If you’re looking for indoor kid friendly amenities, look no further than Nevada Discovery Museum. It features a number of fun interactive exhibitions including Nevada Stories, Under the Stars and Inside Out an Anatomy Experience.
Back on Virginia Street, there is plenty more entertainment. You don't want to miss eating at Kingpai inside the Circus Circus, which is a 24 hour all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on the weekends. After mosey on down to the Eldorado, where you can grab a drink at the Roxy, a jazz and martini bar inside with awesome happy hour specials. The music is fantastic and the jazz piano player takes songs by request and also sings his own sets. Try the chocolate martini or if you prefer a different spirit, The Kentucky is great for bourbon drinkers. Before you know it, the sun has set on Downtown Reno, closing out the perfect day in this city.

Weekend Two, Friday
Inside Nevada’s Moonlite Bunny Ranch
The women of Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel are both sex workers and master negotiators.
Come for the sex, stay for the negotiating skills: At Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch, success depends less on beauty and more on a woman's skill at asking for what she deserves.
Unlike most industries, many legal sex workers in legal prostitution are paid more than their illegal counterparts. The price difference is in part due to the negotiation, which creates an opportunity for price discrimination (charging more to customers willing to pay). The brothels are legal, but listing prices are not. Negotiation skills are mandatory for these women.
The brothel has something of an employee manual that contains tips and instructions on how to negotiate. The Bunny Bible was written by Dennis Hof and his COO, Suzette Cole.

Bigger in Texas
Clean energy is booming in Texas and across red states, but the Trump administration's policies could tilt the playing field in favor of fossil fuels.

Interstate 10 (I-10) is the major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States. In the U.S. state of Texas, it runs east from Anthony, at the border with New Mexico, through El Paso, San Antonio and Houston to the border with Louisiana in Orange, Texas.
At just under 880 miles (1,420 km), the Texas segment of I-10, maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation, is the longest continuous untolled freeway in North America that is operated by a single authority.
It is also the longest stretch of highway with a single designation within a single state. Mile marker 880 and its corresponding exit number in Orange, Texas, are the highest numbered mile marker and exit on any freeway in North America. After widening was completed in 2008, a portion of the highway west of Houston is now also believed to be the widest in the world, at 26 lanes. There is a wider section in China on the G4 Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway; however, that section is a toll plaza approach.
More than a third of I-10's entire length is located in Texas alone. El Paso, near the Texas–New Mexico state line, is 785 miles (1,263 km) from the western terminus of I-10 in Santa Monica, California, making it closer to Los Angeles than it is to Orange, Texas, 857 miles (1,379 km) away at the Texas–Louisiana state line. Likewise, Orange is only 789 miles (1,270 km) from the eastern terminus of I-10 in Jacksonville, Florida. - WIKIPEDIA
President Barack Obama visits Auditorium Shores | Austin, TX 2007
Could a marker honoring President Obama be coming to Auditorium Shores? Two City Council members have proposed a permanent marker at the park to commemorate a 2007 rally held by President Obama's campaign. The measure is an item on this week's City Council agenda.
BROTHEL The Perfect Recession Proof Business
BROTHEL - The Perfect Recession Proof Business?
Recession hits the brothel business
One Nevada madam says clients no longer have as much money to spend, and she worries about the fiscal cliff negotiations in Washington.
he world's oldest profession took a hit during the recession as customers were forced to cut back on their, uh, entertainment expenses. But just when a recovery seemed under way, even prostitution has become a victim of the fiscal cliff, CNBC reports.
In this video, the madam who runs the famous Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada says business has been better. Susan Austin thought prostitution would be recession-proof, but that didn't happen.
When a lot of my high rollers all of a sudden discovered they didn't have the discretionary income and they couldn't play as hard as they used to, well that definitely dug into their wallets which definitely affected us, she told CNBC's Jane Wells.Image: Couple holding hands (Corbis/Corbis)
The company doesn't count prostitutes among its employees. Instead, the prostitutes work as independent contractors that negotiate prices with customers and then pay Mustang Ranch a commission, Wells reports. If customers decide to use one of the larger, nicely decorated suites, it can add $1,000 to their bill.
The Ranch has been forced to drop prices on its Pleasure Menu. And though it's tough to imagine the fiscal cliff being a top conversation topic there, Austin seems to be worried about the potential of higher taxes and a heavier burden on the rich that the fiscal cliff may bring.
Anything that happens in Washington affects everybody in the United states, she said. It's going to trickle down to me sooner or later. So it's definitely going to hurt me in the end.
Nevada has been hit harder than any other state in the downturn. Last month, it had the highest unemployment rate and the second highest foreclosure rate in the country.
Las Vegas is slowly recovering.
Further north, there's still a fiscal Reno 911.
Nevada's second largest city calls itself The Biggest Little City in the World. Situated near Lake Tahoe, the recession hit Reno almost has hard as it hit Las Vegas. The recovery has been even slower.
It's been a very difficult go, said real estate developer Lance Gilman.
Gilman may have the most diverse resume in America. He's a former Harley-Davidson dealer and a veteran real estate developer. He and a partner have built the 30,000-acre Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, a major manufacturing and distribution hub for Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, PetSmart, and dozens of other companies.
There's no debt on this park, he proudly claimed, there's not even a credit line.
Gilman was recently elected to the Storey County Commission, home to Virginia City of Bonanza fame. But his most famous venture is the Mustang Ranch, Nevada's first licensed brothel. Gilman bought the business in 2003. It's as normal a service business as there is on Earth today.
