Debbie Center Plays the Carillon (Bell Tower), City & County Building, Denver, Colorado
I'm celebrating my 25th year of playing the carillon (bell tower) at the City & County Building in Denver, Colorado. I have played almost every year since 1984 for Christmas, Chanukkah, as well as various Broncos events and other events! I've even been known to sneak in a Grateful Dead tune here and there, just to see if people are really listening! Tonight I also played Dark Star and Black Muddy River! I wonder if people were twirling in the streets while I played? In this video, I'm playing Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella, in loving memory of my mom, Janette Shulman. I used to play the piece for her every year. She just loved that! Miss you, Mom ...
Walking around the state capitol building in Denver, Colorado
Colorado's Capitol building is located in the city and county of Denver at about the intersection of Colfax Avenue (200 East) and Sherman Street (you can see the intersection in this video). The Capitol Building is the home of the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado.
The building was intentionally designed similarly to that of the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. Colorado's capitol building was constructed in the 1890s from Colorado white granite, and opened for use in November 1894.
The building's gold dome consists of real gold plate, first added in 1908, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush.
On the exterior west steps, leading into the building, there's an engraving marking the elevation as exactly on mile above sea level (visible in this recording). These steps, and the engraving, face west towards Civic Center Park (just across the street) and the magnificent Rocky Mountains.
