Visually stunning, kinesthetically invigorating, and intellectually evocative, Museum of False Memories is a tour de force of visual movement theater that examines the dynamic relationships between memory, objects and perception over time. The performance is inspired by the work of visual artist Joseph Cornell whose boxed assemblages earned him the reputation for being one of the most poetic and mysterious artists in the US.
Recipients of Dance Metro DC's 2010 Founders Award for Innovation in Dance, Dance Box Theater Artistic Directors Stephen Clapp and Laura Schandelmeier present a spirited quintet featuring unique box solos, a dance that takes place inside a giant bubble and an intricate and evocative ensemble. Performed to a majestic and dramatic orchestral score by local composer Jamie Kowalski, the work is danced by Clapp and Schandelmeier with guest artists Valerie Branch, Briana Carper, and Ilana Faye Silverstein. With lighting design by Ben Levine and costumes by Renate Maile-Moskowitz, Museum of False Memories marks Dance Box Theater's eighth full-evening performance.
Known for their unique approach to creative processes, use of new technologies and development of innovative partnerships, Laura Schandelmeier and Stephen Clapp (Co-Founders and Co-Artistic Directors of Dance Box Theater, Inc.) have been collaborating since 2004 and have since premiered seven full-evening performance works with increasing recognition regionally, nationally and internationally. Schandelmeier and Clapp have received choreographic commissions from the Creative Communities Fund of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, the InSeries and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Co-Artistic Directors have each received numerous awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council for their individual artistry.
Dance Box Theater has had works presented by Dance Place (Washington, DC), The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, DC), the Source Theater Festival (Washington, DC), Joe's Movement Emporium (Mount Rainier, MD), The Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts (College Park, MD), Theatre Project (Baltimore, MD), The Goose Route Dance Festival (Shepherdstown, WV), The State of The Nation Festival/ArtSpot Productions (New Orleans, LA), Alternate ROOTS (Atlanta, GA), Dance Base (Edinburgh, UK).

Women's Work & Other Stories / Renewal
Born and raised in Kentucky, choreographer Angella Foster explores her kinship with the strong women who shaped the land and the character of her home state with their bare hands. Inspired by her grandmas stories of growing up the daughter of sharecroppers, Foster captures in Womens Work the rhythm of daily labor and explores the emotional landscape of an imagined community of women in rural Kentucky. The production premiered at the Clarice Smith Center in College Park, MD in 2009 with a musical score composed by Rob Collier.

Other Suns (A Trilogy)
... a fiercely visceral piece that felt like one had stepped onto a platform that revolved sometimes at dizzying speeds. — SF Bay Guardian
... a stunning new synthesis that unites the hectic language of the limbs with morphing group sculptural forms, tied together with [Jenkins] unflinching commitment to beauty. — Contra Costa Times
YBCA is thrilled to co-commission Other Suns (A Trilogy), a world premiere trilogy of dances created by Margaret Jenkins and her company in a cross-cultural collaboration with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company of Guangzhou, China. Jenkins, who has for 35 years been one of the Bay Area's most influential and innovative choreographers, investigates symmetry and asymmetry in both Chinese and American cultures. Through an intricate blend of contemporary dance forms, Other Suns (A Trilogy) transcends national and cultural barriers, offering a new perspective on balance and imbalance in our fast-changing, global society. Live music composed by Paul Dresher and performed by the Paul Dresher Ensemble, with additional music by Bun Ching-Lam.
Other Suns (A Trilogy) has been co-commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Peak Performances at Montclair State University in New Jersey, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, with additional support from Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, The Hellman Family Philanthropic Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Bernard Osher Foundation, The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, The San Francisco Arts Commission, The San Francisco Foundation, and generous individuals.
