LINCOLN'S DEATH BED | 1893 WOLD'S FAIR | Chicago History Museum
Come along with us as we tour the Chicago History Museum and see some of the interesting past of Chicago. This museum also houses the actual Lincoln Bed from the Peterson house. The Chicago History Museum was founded in 1856 to study and interpret Chicago's history. It is located in Lincoln Park at 1601 North Clark Street at the intersection of North Avenue in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood. The CHS adopted the name, Chicago History Museum, in September 2006 for its public presence. We visited the museum on November 18, 2019.

Illinois Adventure #1701 Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site
The Italianate structure known as the U. S. Grant Home was built in 1859-60 as a residence by Alexander J. Jackson of Galena.
The Grant Home site includes several small mid-19th century homes comprising the three-block Grant Home Historic Neighborhood. Grant State Park, a tree-shaded area south of the Grant Home has picnic tables for public use. Also in the park is the Long House, a log building constructed ca. 1851 and moved to the site from Elizabeth, Illinois in 1976, representing a typical settler's home of mid-nineteenth-century Jo Daviess County.
Visitors are provided with an interpreter-conducted tour of the Grant Home. Interpreters are dressed in historic costumes from April through October. The tour emphasizes Grant as the victorious war leader, the 1868 candidate for president, and the eighteenth President of the United States. The adjacent building contains exhibits on Grant's life and history of the Grant Home. The first floor of the Home is accessible to persons with disabilities, as are the exhibit room and restrooms in the building next door. The Home's second floor is not accessible.

Motor Row Historic District, Chicago Locomobile, Hudson, Marmon More
It looks like a sad ghost town for the most part as serious redevelopment of this area has yet to take place. That's too bad because the area is full of history beyond that regarding car dealers. Other attractions to area include Prairie St. home to some of the cities oldest mansions and at 2140 Michigan Chess studios.
Here is how one of the markers describes what was the original magnificent mile.
In 1902 there were only 600 automobiles in the Chicagoland area. Within thirty years there were 90,000 cars. The interest in motor vehicles continued to expand rapidly with 300,000 on the road by 1935. Many of the automobiles purchased during this time frame were purchased on Chicago's Motor Row.
A gateway to opulence for the automobile industry was fashioned on south Michigan Avenue. The buildings that served as showrooms for the automobile manufacturers were custom made for every aspect of sales and service. Architects such as Christian Eckstrom, Alfred Alscheuler, Philip Maher, William Holabird, Martin Roche and Albert Kahn crafted these multi-storied structures for the repair, painting, storage and selling of the most modern advance in private transportation: the automobile.
This group of commercial buildings here on the Near South Side of Chicago is considered to be the largest, intact early automobile row in the United States. At it's peak as many as 116 different automobile manufacturers were represented within several blocks of downtown Chicago. Ford, Fiat, Buick, Cadillac, Pierce Arrow, Locomobile, Marmon and Hudson, to name a few, were displayed for the cunsumer's pleasure. The excitment and pulsating atmosphere was matched only by the smooth ride and shiny exterior of a brand new motor vehicle.
This video features four of the buildings.
The Locomobile of America Co. showrooms was at 2000 South Michigan Avenue . Designed by architects Jenny, Mundie & Jensen it opened in 1909. A three-story corner building .. of reinforced concrete trimmed in brick and terra
The Hudson Motor Showroom is at 2222-2228 South Michigan Ave. Architect: Alfred Alschuler designed a richly decorated building with details like; H for Hudson medallions above the Palladian windows, the twisted columns, rope modelling around the windows and more.
The Marmon Co. Showroom at 2232 South Michigan Avenue was designed by architect: Alfred Alschuler and finished in 1922.
This Spanish-revival style building still has the company name Marmon on its terra cotta facade .. It has been renovated and converted in Marmon Grand banquet ..
Trivia: One car in the Marmon line, the Wasp, is the legendary winner of the first Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, in 1911
The Chicago Motor Club building 2400 S. Michigan Ave. Designed by Prairie School architect Philip Maher, opened in 1936.The Chicago Motor Club building was designed and completed within 265 days in 1928 and opened January of the next year. Having been granted National Register status in 1978, the building is widely regarded as one of Chicago's finest Art Deco style skyscrapers.
In 1954 it was sold to the Chicago Defender newspaper in 1954. They filled in the basemant pool, moved in printing presses and operated out of here for forty years. It has stood vacant since 2006 and is looking pretty rundown. It is on the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois Chicagoland Watch List
There is an extensive post about this building on the Forgotten Chicago site.

Cahokia was the center of a pyramid civilization, a.k.a. mound-building culture in the center of what is today the United States. It is the largest pyramid complex north of Mexico and it was one of hundreds of such pyramid sites in US territory.
You can still climb the pyramids in Cahokia State Park in southwestern Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri.

[Wikipedia] Prairie Avenue District
The Prairie Avenue District is a historic district in the Near South Side community area of Chicago, Illinois. It includes the 1800 and 1900 blocks of South Prairie Avenue and the 1800 block of South Indiana, and 211-217 East Cullerton. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Dearborn and became the city's most fashionable residential district after the Great Chicago Fire. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on December 27, 1979. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1972. The John J. Glessner House, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson in 1885–1886 at 1800 S. Prairie Avenue, has been restored as a historic house museum and is open for public tours. In 2006, the Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance, a non-profit organization was formed to provide representation for thousands of South Loop residents, including the Prairie District, Central Station and Museum Park, Motor Row, the South Michigan Ave Corridor, as well as other areas of the Near South Side.

I drove through downtown St. Louis. This is what I saw.
We begin our tour of St Louis on the corner of Broadway and Cole street, downtown, at the Dome at Americas Center. This is where the St Louis Rams used to play. It’s on the north end of downtown.
We’re going to drive up and down the streets of downtown St. Louis and show you different points of interest. It’s Wednesday, December, 18, 2019 at 10 o clock in the morning.
St Louis had just received 4 inches of snow the previous day, but on this day, the sun was shining bright. On an average year, St Louis gets about 16 inches of snow, so for St Louis, this was considered pretty decent snowfall.
St Louis was named for King Louis IX. The city was founded in 1764 as a French fur-trading village. Nicknamed the gateway to the west, St Louis has more free major tourist attractions than any other city in the country outside Washington, D.C. Visitors pay nothing to visit the art museum, the history museum, the science center and the zoo.
We’re coming up on Clark Street, which is where Busch Stadium is. This is home to the St Louis cardinals, Say Mappy: Did you know: The cardinals have won 11 world series titles. Also on this street is ballpark village on the right, where there are lots of restaurants and bars. On game days you can sit on the roof and watch the games from across the street.
We’re heading west now towards the Enterprise Center, which is another venue where they play hockey games and hold concerts. This is where the St Louis Blues play for the NHL. They just won the Stanley Cup only a few months back.
We’re heading north now on14th Street up towards the heart of downtown. Off to the east, you can see The Arch, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. We’ll go down there and get a closer view later.
We’ll head east now on Washington Street.
The American Planning Association called Washington Street one of the 10 best streets in America. Years back this was a pretty dumpy street, but after $100 million in renovations, now its one of the trendiest and hottest spots in St. Louis.
They say Washington Street is the perfect combination of modern chic meets classic 19th century architecture lined with beautiful lofts, eclectic boutiques and restaurants and exciting nightlife.
Now, we’re going to head south on 6th Street.
In 1904, St. Louis was the first U.S. city, and only the third in the world, to host the modern summer Olympics. St. Louis is home to Anheuser Busch, and Nestle Purina.
Directly in front of us is Keiner (like weaner) Plaza Park, which has a skating rink, playground, fountains and a concert area.
Off to the distance you can see the arch. The big domed building is the old courthouse, which is now part of the Gateway Arch National Park. It used to be where many important court cases, including the infamous Dred Scott anti slavery court case.
We’re going to go back down Broadway and take Market Street.
Now we’ll take Tucker Blvd north again.
This is Olive Street.
Now, we’re going to go back to 4th Street and head north so we can get to the entrance for the Gateway Arch.
In this part of town are a number of casinos.
The Gateway Arch is 630 feet high. It’s nicknamed the Gateway to the West, and is a monument to the Western Hemisphere. It’s the tallest arch in the world and the tallest man-made monument in the United States.
It was built in 1965 for a cost of 13 million dollars.
For $12 bucks you can take a tram to the top where there are windows from which you can see 30 miles to the east and west. People who go to the top sometimes get scared, since on windy days, it sways as much as 18 inches in either direction.
South of the arch now, we begin our departure from St. Louis. We’ll cross the Mississippi River over I-55 on the Clay Bridge.

St Louis gets a bad rap for being one of the most dangerous cities in the country, and there are some really bad and dangerous areas in the greater St Louis Metro area outside of downtown proper.
But as far as downtown itself, it’s a great city.

This is one museum every bookworm should visit
Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, Tupac Shakur's song Dear Mama, Patrick Henry's speech Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death – what do they all have in common? They all rank among the nation's great works of writing, and they're all celebrated at the new American Writers Museum (AWM) in downtown Chicago, this year's 10Best Readers' Choice winner for Best Attraction in Illinois.
The museum opened its doors in May of 2017 as the first museum in the United States dedicated to America's writers and works. After an inspiring visit to the Dublin Writers Museum in Ireland, AWM founder Malcolm O'Hagan was surprised to find that nothing similar existed in the U.S.
Almost a decade later, his idea became an 11,000-square-foot reality on Chicago's Cultural Mile.

Illinois Adventure #1704 Millennium Park
Millennium Park is a public park located in the heart of downtown Chicago. It is bordered by Michigan Avenue to the west, Columbus Drive to the east, Randolph Street to the North and Monroe Street to the South. It is a prominent civic center and arts display area on the City of Chicago's Lake Michigan lakefront. In 2004, a 24.5 acre section of northern Grant Park, previously occupied by Illinois Central rail yards and parking lots, was built over and redeveloped as Millennium Park.
Highlights of the 2014 Risa K. Lambert Luncheon
The Museum welcomed more than 2,200 people to this year's Risa K. Lambert Luncheon in Chicago, at which Manny and Fern Steinfeld received the 2014 National Leadership Award. The luncheon was chaired by Karyn and Bill Silverstein and featured remarks by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. Presidential historian and award-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin delivered the keynote address. This short video presents highlights of the luncheon.
