April 5, 1968 - Robert F. Kennedy's Remarks to the Cleveland City Club, Cleveland, Ohio
On the Mindless Menace of Violence was a speech given by United States Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. He delivered it in front of the City Club of Cleveland at the Sheraton-Cleveland Hotel on April 5, 1968, the day after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He sought to counter the riots and disorder emerging in the United States' cities and address the growing problem of violence in American society.
‘’What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created? No martyr's cause has ever been stilled by his assassin's bullet.
No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders. A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of the people.
Among free men, said Abraham Lincoln, “there can be no successful appeal from the ballot to the bullet; and those who take such appeal are sure to lose their cause and pay the costs. Violence breeds violence, repression brings retaliation, and only a cleaning of our whole society can remove this sickness from our soul. For there is another kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. This is a slow destruction of a child by hunger, and schools without books and homes without heat in the winter. This is the breaking of a man's spirit by denying him the chance to stand as a father and as a man among other men.’’
Squires Castle.wmv
Squire's Castle is a shell of a building located in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks in Willoughby Hills, Ohio (visible from River Road). It was built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire for use as the gatekeeper's house for his future country estate, which was never built. Squire, a founder of Standard Oil Company, bought the surrounding 525 acres (212 ha) of land but never completed the project. Squire sold the property in 1922 and the Cleveland Metroparks acquired it in 1925.
Today Squire's Castle is open to the public free-of-admission. In 2008 the structure still had a roof, the interior was bare and open to the elements, and second story no longer had a floor. The Willoughby Hills Public Library annually holds a history seminar there. The surrounding park offers a footpath, riding trails, cooking grills, and a large grassy field.
Squire's Castle has now acquired a sense of mystery. It is purportedly haunted by Squire's wife, Rebecca. The urban legend tells of her tripping and breaking her neck in the castle, but in reality, she died in Wickliffe, Ohio, in 1929, after the property was sold.

Rep. Scott DesJarlais commends Cleveland/Bradley Co. Chamber of Commerce
02.05.14
Full Text:
Mr. Speaker:
Last week, I had the honor of attending the Cleveland Bradley County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting where Mrs. Margaret Schenck and Mr. Bob Card both received awards for their devotion to free market values and dedication to our community.
I want to thank these individuals along with the entire Cleveland Bradley County Chamber of Commerce for their ongoing fight to grow and support local businesses.
Organizations like the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce show that American small business owners and entrepreneurs are doing their part in growing jobs and strengthening our economy.
Now it is time for Washington to live up to its end of the bargain. We must eliminate the numerous regulatory roadblocks that are being imposed on businesses and holding them back from reaching their full potential.
We know the path to prosperity will not be paved by Washington bureaucrats.
Rather a brighter future will be secured by groups like the Cleveland Bradley County Chamber of Commerce who seek to foster innovation and empower local businesses.
I yield back.

Late 1940s - Fremont Semipro baseball games - Wayne County
Longtime Fremont Mayor Oscar Turlington (1903-1971) was first elected in 1932 and except for a few short gaps; he completed his last term in 1969. Professionally he worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses, before opening his own general store from 1941 through the late 1960s. Turlington loved his home town, which he captured on 16-mm film with a movie camera. The footage spans from 1938 through 1950, and includes rare Dufaycolor stock, which was only available in England.
Original reel footage shared by Leon Mooring and the Oscar Turlington Family. Digitized by the Wayne County Public Library.

Heated Debate in Bradley County Sheriff''s Race
Voters in Bradley County listened in on a heated discussion between candidates for sheriff Thursday. Tennessee State Representative Eric Watson, R-Cleveland, and incumbent Sheriff Jim Ruth went head to head at Mountain View Inn in Cleveland in a packed room during a debate. Some voters had already decided who they want as sheriff, but others said they need to see evidence of good leadership. The candidates were fired up, rehashing the past to discredit their opponents.Remember when somebody in the sheriff's office shot through the ceiling of the sheriff's department? said Watson. Ruth countered that comment saying, One time in 41 years I have an accident, did something stupid. The Kiwanis Club held the debate so voters could get to know their candidates. Some talking points included how law enforcement officers are used, drug programs and county-wide crime rates. It's my first time ever coming to anything like this. It was very interesting, said voter Jeff Wagner. I was born and raised in Cleveland all my life. I've seen a lot of good sheriffs in and out. Each candidate told NewsChannel9's Briona Arradondo that they plan to stick to the budget and save taxpayers' money. Ruth said he has already done that by switching to more fuel-efficient sheriff's deputy vehicles. Watson said he would reduce the number of supervisors for deputies in the field within the department. It's a contentious election, with each candidate explaining why their opponent wasn't qualified for the top job. (I have) 41 years of experience in all aspects of law enforcement. My opponent has two years in actual pro-duty and his other 10 years he's been in the courts, which is vastly different from somebody who's running for sheriff, said Ruth.Watson said he would bring change to the county. There's a DARE program. We have to put the DARE program back into our school system, said Watson. The current administration took the DARE program out of schools. Nothing's been taught to our kids in schools for the last three years. The primary election for the county is May 6, and that's when voters will decide who they want to protect Bradley County.By Briona Arradondo

FILM DESCRIPTION:
An inept cop suddenly gets a new partner in the person of a cabbie with attitude in this high-rolling comedy. Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) is a police officer who becomes the laughingstock of the department after a series of traffic accidents cause him to lose his driver's license. One day, Washburn gets an urgent call to head out to the location of a bank robbery; unable to drive himself there, he hails a cab. As it happens, the taxi is being driven by Belle (Queen Latifah), a single mom who, after making a name for herself as the fastest pizza delivery person in New York, has moved up to driving a hack. What begins as a wild ride to the scene of the crime gets even wilder as Washburn and Belle become unexpected allies while following the trail of a team of beautiful but reckless female bank robbers led by Vanessa (Gisele Bundchen). Adapted from a popular French action comedy with the same name, Taxi was Jimmy Fallon's first big-screen vehicle after leaving the cast of the popular sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.

How feasible is traveling via bus in Knoxville? Ryan Wilusz tries riding KAT for a week
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero recently proposed $13.31 million in funding for Knoxville Area Transit, showing city officials are invested in public transportation. Councilwoman Stephanie Welch is one of those officials who loves the bus system and wants to see more people using it.
I wanted to love it, too.
But Welch is right about one thing: People are going to use whatever transportation option is easiest.
In Knoxville, though, that’s not the bus system.

Focus on Sex Offender in Maryland Girl's Death
News Source Fox 13 Now
SALISBURY, Md. (AP) — Everyone from hunters to homeowners joined in the search for a missing 11-year-old girl, and thousands of people combed Maryland's Eastern shore on Christmas Day with the hope she was alive.
On Friday afternoon, three days after Sarah H. Foxwell was last seen at her home, law enforcement found her body near the Delaware state line. Investigators were working Saturday to determine how she died.
This is not the way we wanted to find our young lady on Christmas, but at the very least we've given closure to the family, Wicomico County State's Attorney Davis R. Ruark said at a news conference.
Ruark said Saturday that an autopsy was being conducted, but he did not expect a cause of death to be released immediately. He added that investigators were working Saturday but said any new charges would likely come after an investigation is complete.
Currently, the focus of the investigation is on Thomas J. Leggs Jr., 30, who was charged Wednesday in Sarah's kidnapping.
There's no indication of involvement of any other individuals at this point, Ruark told The Associated Press.
No new charges were filed as of late Friday.
Leggs is a former boyfriend of the girl's aunt, who is her legal guardian. A public defender representing him has not returned phone calls and a woman who answered the door at Leggs' parents' house declined to speak to a reporter.
Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said the body was found in the northern part of the county, where authorities had focused their search.
Volunteers met up at a stadium in Salisbury early Friday and fanned out to search for her. Lewis also asked property owners in the county to check their fields and yards for the girl and to display something red to let law enforcement know the area had been searched. He also asked hunters to be on the lookout.
Lewis said Sarah was last seen Tuesday night at her home on Maryland's Eastern Shore. A relative discovered she was missing early Wednesday while checking on Sarah and her 6-year-old sister. A charging document says Leggs was the last person seen with Sarah.
A juvenile witness awoke during the night Tuesday and saw Sarah leave the bedroom with Tommy, and said he was wearing blue jeans, an orange jacket and white sneakers, the charging document says.
Sarah lived with her aunt, Amy Fothergill, who told police the child's toothbrush was missing from the home, according to the statement of probable cause.
Deputies said they found a green toothbrush and a lollipop in a truck Leggs admitted driving. Leggs said he had been wearing jeans and white sneakers the previous night — the same clothes he was wearing when police questioned him.
The sheriff said Thursday that Leggs has been uncooperative and of no assistance to our investigators.
Sarah was a sixth-grade student at Wicomico Middle School, bright and lighthearted, Tracey Powell, a paternal aunt, told The Baltimore Sun at a Christmas Eve candlelight vigil for her niece on Thursday night.
She would just run the hallways laughing and giggling, and just jump into your arms, Powell said.
Leggs is listed on the Maryland and Delaware sex offender registries. The Maryland listing notes that he is a child sex offender, but does not give details about his conviction.
Lewis said Leggs has been convicted of a sex offense in Wicomico County and was charged Oct. 29 with fourth-degree burglary.
In 2001, Leggs was convicted in Delaware of rape involving a victim who was 16 or 17, according to the Delaware registry. The registry describes his risk level as high and notes he is unemployed.
Leggs, who has been convicted of assault several times, also is awaiting trial on charges of burglary and destruction of property in Ocean City.
