Badlands National Park, South Dakota - Cliff Shelf Nature Trail (2019)
Badlands National Park (Lakota: Makȟóšiča) is an American national park located in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi; 982.4 km2) of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The National Park Service manages the park, with the South Unit being co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.
The Badlands Wilderness protects 64,144 acres (100.2 sq mi; 259.6 km2) of the park as a designated wilderness area, and is one site where the black-footed ferret, one of the most endangered mammals in the world, was reintroduced to the wild. The South Unit, or Stronghold District, includes sites of 1890s Ghost Dances, a former United States Air Force bomb and gunnery range, and Red Shirt Table, the park's highest point at 3,340 feet (1,020 m).
Authorized as Badlands National Monument on March 4, 1929, it was not established until January 25, 1939. Badlands was redesignated a national park on November 10, 1978. Under the Mission 66 plan, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center was constructed for the monument in 1957–58. The park also administers the nearby Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Movies such as Dances with Wolves (1990) and Thunderheart (1992) were partially filmed in Badlands National Park.

Hiking Notch Trail: Badlands National Park
A visit to Badlands National Park wouldn't be complete without hiking the Notch Trail. This trail is unique not only for the amazing landscape that it traverses, but for the ladder like steps you have to climb to access it's upper sections. The hike is relatively easy, but can get hot in the summer. There are also signs warning about the potential for rattlesnakes on the trail. This hike is a there and back hike. You come back the same way that you hike in because the trail dead ends at the edge of a 50 foot cliff where you can sit and take in views of the Badlands and the prairie beyond.
Badlands National park protects over 240 thousand acres of buttes, pinnacles, and mixed grass prairie. It was made a national park in the year 1978 and is such a unique place. The Badlands has several places to hike, picnic and learn about the flora, fauna, and ancient history of the area. The land was originally hunting grounds of many Native American tribes. It was originally the Lakota people that gave the area the origins of it's name. They called it Mako Sica or Land Bad.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to stay very long in Badlands National Park because it was only a stop on our way to somewhere else, but this park definitely merits exploration! We hope to return someday. Also unfortunately I accidentally deleted a huge chunk of the video that we captured from this trip! AAAARRRGH! Such is the life of a Youtuber!

Badlands National Park
Recorded June 24, 2019
Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and towering spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. It is desolation at its truest, where you can look for miles and see no sign of civilization. Bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs inhabit its sprawling grasslands. The Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) winds past scenic lookouts. This video covers my drive through the park on a sunny day in June. See the index below for more details...

Our adventures in the Badlands continue!
Last week, you saw our first taste of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. But we definitely needed to get dirty and sweaty in order to really experience the park.

We headed out one morning on Saddle Pass Trail...well, at least we tried to. We parked at the trail head but could not find the marked trail for the life of us!
With a complete stranger along for the adventure, we all scrambled up a very non-trail route in order to reach the pinnacle of the hike and get a great view of most of the park. And it was stunning. What a unique and truly beautiful place we had found.
After our initial ascent to the peak, we dropped back down and were greeted by some Bighorn Sheep (two mommas and two babies). Not really greeted so much...they were just trying to get away from us, but they did startle us as they tried. (no, we weren't chasing them.)
So yes, always Beware in the Badlands!
But it was still one of the unique moments in nature that we treasure so much, and part of what keeps us coming back to the national parks over and over again. There is so much beauty to experience, so much wonder to absorb. The parks are, without a doubt, sacred spaces for our family.
After one more scramble to the top of another peak that somehow gave us even better views than the first spot, we hung out for a bit, ate a snack and just enjoyed the mild temps of the day with a view fit for kings.

Badlands National Park | Badlands Loop Road and Sheep Mountain Table
Badlands National Park in South Dakota is one of the most unique US National Parks that we've visited. The dramatic landscapes span layered rock formations, steep canyons and towering spires. Take a drive with us as we explore Badlands Loop Road, hike Medicine Root Loop and make our way to Sheep Mountain Table for a spectacular sunset. The highlight of our time here was seeing the majestic bighorn sheep, the colorful mounds at Yellow Mounds Overlooks and the incredible views that this park has to offer by car and on foot.
