Clovelly, Devon
On the north coast of Devon, the whitewashed houses in the quaint village of Clovelly cluster around a narrow cobblestoned pathway that descends steeply to a sheltered harbor . Unusually, the entire village has been privately owned by a single family since the 1730s, and this continuity has helped maintain the picturebook atmosphere of the village. Until fairly recently, pack donkeys delivered luggage down to the harborfront hotel, but now the hotel can be reached via a Land Rover service down a limited access back road. Tenants in the houses that line the central pathway, handle heavy deliveries (e.g., coal for the winter fires) on improvised sleds designed to slide down the cobblestones.
As can be seen from the tidemark on the lower harbor wall, Clovelly experiences a high tidal range ---- at low tide, the fishing boats are high and dry, and the seashore is a rocky jumble.

Clovelly Fishing Village, North Devon UK
This is a beautiful village in Devon very popular with tourists and so it should be. The history is amazing.
Clovelly is a small village in the Torridge district of Devon, England. It has a harbour and is notable for its steep pedestrianised cobbled main street, donkeys and views over the Bristol Channel. At the 2011 census, the parish population was 443, which was 50 fewer than ten years previously. The ward of Clovelly Bay includes the island of Lundy.
There is a village visitor centre which charges a fee for parking, entrance to two museums, Clovelly Court gardens, and an audiovisual guide to the village's history.
Unusually, the village is still privately owned and has been associated with only three families since the middle of the 13th century, nearly 800 years. The estate is run by the Clovelly Estate Company, led by the Hon. John Rous, a descendant of the Hamlyn family who have owned the village, estate and manor house Clovelly Court since 1738. John Rous is the eldest son of Keith Rous, the 5th Earl of Stradbroke and Mary Asquith, granddaughter of former Prime Minister H. H. Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith.The scenery has been captured by artists for its richness of colour, especially in the separately accessed and separated Clovelly Court and along The Hobby, a road cut through the woods and overlooking the sea. The South West Coast Path National Trail runs from the top of the village and the section from Clovelly to Hartland Quay is particularly spectacular.

The novelist Charles Kingsley lived here as a child from 1831 to 1836, while his father, Rev. Charles Kingsley served first as senior curate then as rector. Later, in 1855, his novel Westward Ho! did much to stimulate interest in Clovelly and to boost its tourist trade.
Actor Joss Ackland and his wife Rosemary bought a property in Higher Clovelly on the outskirts of the village in 1989.[11] Ackland still lives there but Rosemary died in 2002 and is buried in the grounds of their home.[12] Ackland has appeared in promotional videos for the town and has spoken often of his love of and connection to Clovelly.
Clovelly is also described by Charles Dickens in A Message from the Sea and was painted by Rex Whistler, whose cameos of the village were used on a china service by Wedgwood.
The sixteenth-century Carys of Clovelly feature in the historical novel The Grove of Eagles by Winston Graham.
The surgeon Campbell De Morgan (1811–1876), who first speculated that cancer arose locally and then spread more widely in the body, was born here.
Clovelly is mentioned in passing by Rudyard Kipling in Stalky & Co. as being located to the west of the boys' academy.
In Susan Coolidge's In the High Valley (1890), part of the Katy series, a walk into Clovelly is described: ... surely a more extraordinary thing in the way of a street does not exist in the known world. The little village is built on the sides of a crack in a tremendous cliff; the street is merely the bottom of the crack, into which the ingenuity of man has fitted a few stones, set slant-wise, with intersecting ridges on which the foot can catch as it goes slipping hopelessly down.

On Sunday 28 October 1838 twelve fishing vessels with a total of twenty-six men on board left Clovelly harbour for the fishing grounds. Only one vessel and its crew ever returned after a ferocious storm in the Bristol Channel. This event led to the founding of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society early the following year with the object of:
giving relief and assistance to the widows and orphans of fishermen; and of mariners, members of the Society, who lose their lives by storms and shipwreck on any part of the coasts of the United Kingdom, while engaged in their lawful occupations; and also to render necessary assistance to such mariners, soldiers, or other poor persons as suffer shipwreck upon the said coasts.
The charity is active supporting the seafaring community suffering hardship and distress.
CLOVELLY, DEVON & A SURPRISE!
Last weekend I explored the cobbled streets of a the quaint, steep (!) North Devon village of Clovelly. No cars or motorbikes allowed in this scenic little hillside village, which means a unique access method for heavy goods and shopping!

Wir fahren nach Clovelly. Clovelly ist ein kleines Dorf im Bezirk Devon, wenige Kilometer nördlich von Cornwall, am Keltischen Meer nahe dem Bristal Canal. Es liegt an einem Hang oberhalb der Küste. Wir sind diesen Hang quer durch den Ort hinunter gegangen. Es ist ein sehenswerter Ort.

Having spent a lot of my own childhood down in Clovelly, Devon throughout the summer months each year, I thought I'd put together a video highlighting just some of the breathtaking views that this and many villages a long the North Devon Coast have to offer.
I was stretched to what footage to include as over the past week (May 2013) this year I've captured some amazing sights. This will be one of a group of videos I post related to the village. I hope you enjoy it.

• Clovelly Village in North Devon is a very special place and somewhere you must visit if you find yourself in this part of the world. Clovelly bay and harbour really are a wonderful sight to behold.
• The Clovelly estate has been home to the Rous family for over 400 years. From Elizabethan times until today, it has remained in private ownership and the village remains a fully functioning working fishing village.
• After you have parked your car, you head to the modern visitor’s centre. Clovelly is open every day of the year except Christmas day. Adults are £7.50 and Children are £4.50 with children under 7 and dogs going free. It’s worth noting that your admission price includes the parking. Clovelly advice that the cobble streets of the village are not suitable for wheelchairs, but there is a land rover service, for a small charge, that will take you down to the harbour and back again.
• Within the visitors centre there is a small cinema that will show you a short film all about the history of the village. It might be tempting to skip this but honestly don’t. It’s worth watching to get a real flavour of the village.
• The visitors centre has an extensive souvenir shop on two levels. Plus, as you leave the visitors centre, down the converted stable yard will find more artisan shops selling beautiful silks and pottery.
• Before you begin your decent, it’s work taking a moment to enjoy the view out to sea at the Mount Pleasant memorial. Known by the locals as Peace Park this is a beautiful place to have a picnic.
• Right the fun begins. Brace yourself for the Clovely steep hill, cobbled decent into the village. Take your time, there is no rush and remember to hold on to the sides if you feel unsteady. Clovelly will certainly give your legs a good workout.
• Unlike most villages, Clovelly has been closed to all vehicles since the 1920’s. The Clovelly Donkeys and sledges bring things in and out of the village.
• As you decent you will find quaint shops, two museums, The Kingsley Museum and the Fisherman’s Cottage both of which are well worth popping in to.
• There are also two hotels come pups in the village, the New Inn Hotel half way down and the Red Lion Hotel on the Harbour itself. Both offer accommodation as well as food and drink. If you fancy something a bit different there are several cafes selling locally caught crab sandwiches as well as other delicacies. They can cater for vegetarians but you might need to ring ahead if you are gluten free or vegan.
The windy lanes decent towards the 14th Century Quay and harbour. Well done if you have made it this far. The views will be worth it.
• Recently Clovelly has featured in the highly acclaimed film version of the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer.
• It’s amazing to think that parts of this village, quay and harbour has been here for over 600 years, relatively unchanged.
• So you now have two choices, you can either walk all the way back up, which is exactly what we did stopping for lunch on the way in a delightful café. Or you can catch the land rover from the other side of the Red Lion Hotel. This will take you back to the converted stable yard via a side road. There is fee for using the land rover.
