Nightclub fire brings dark memories

For a lot of people in our state, news of that Brazilian night club fire that killed more than 200 people stirs some dark memories. It was nearly ten years ago when 100 people died in a nightclub fire in New England. The cause was pyrotechnics which is also believed to be the source of the fire this weekend in Brazil.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people stormed the exits of a crowded Chicago night club after a disturbance broke out early on Monday, killing at least 21 people and leaving many more injured, police said.
There were more than 1,500 people in the two-story Epitome Night Club when someone released pepper spray or mace into the air in the early morning hours. a fire commander said.
Police said that patrons appeared to have had difficulty leaving the building.
Club patrons told local television stations that people were trampled in a rush for the door.
Medical teams from local hospitals responded to the site, along with several ambulances and paramedics.

Cold fireworks must be banned entirely, so that no one can use any kind of fireworks in clubs, because people suffer and their families suffer. We pay money and in return we get people losing their lives.

STORYLINE
A day of mourning was declared in Russia on Monday for victims of deadly nightclub fire in the industrial city of Perm that left at least 112 people dead.
Grieving relatives were laying floral tributes and photographs outside the Lame Horse nightclub in memory of the victims.
About 130 people remained in hospital with injuries from the early Saturday blaze, which witnesses say was sparked by onstage fireworks that shot into the decorative twig ceiling of the Lame Horse club.
Four people have been ordered held pending an investigation into the country's worst blaze in decades.
The federal Investigative Committee said the suspects - the club's owner, the executive director, the artistic director and a businessman hired to install pyrotechnics on the night of the blaze - were ordered taken into custody on Sunday by Perm's Leninsky District Court.
The committee's Web site said they were suspected of negligence causing multiple deaths, and violating fire safety rules causing multiple deaths.

I was downstairs in the toilet, and all of a sudden I can smell something more than a proper smell, and I came out, and I came upstairs, and theres smoke everywhere and people are running out, and I look up and there's people firing fireworks up in the air - up inside the building so it hit the arch of the arena and everything's up in smoke.
And then everyone's running out panicking, everythings up in smoke so quick, and we're running out and everyone's running over everybody, trapperling, and theres people still inside knocked out on the floor its crazy man! This is so dramatic for this new years, its unbelievable, its still unbelievable, I'm touched by this - I can't believe it!

Death toll hits 113 in club fire as survivors recall nightmare

The death toll from Friday's fire at a nightclub in the Russian city of Perm has risen to 113 as a national day of mourning is held. One-hundred and twenty were injured, some in a critical condition. An indoor firework display is suspected as the cause, but the investigation is ongoing.
