Dapeng Peninsula - Shenzhen's amenities being a coastal city
After our wedding we decided to relax and unwind a bit at the beach here in Shenzhen. We called a private driver who drove us there and picked us up again the other day. This particular place is in Pengchang Village/鹏城村 (JiaoChangWei/较场尾) on the east side of Dapeng Peninsula. The beach here isn't as nice as Dongchong or Xichong, but I decided to go there because the hotel here is offering some water activities and Dapeng Fortress is nearby, which I wanted to show our visitors!
The whole village is currently under massive renovation. The guesthouse prices are already steep, so I am guessing next summer will see a few more price hikes. There are plenty of restaurants and KTV bars along the promenade where you have some nice seafood and cold beer.

Shenzhen Mangrove Nature Reserve is located in the northeastern coast of Shenzhen Bay. It is belongs to a Birds Nature Reserve. It covers an area of 368 hectares. It is the only nature reserves that located in the urban area and the smallest one in China. It has been called Mini Protected Area by foreign environmental experts. There are 189 kinds of and the number of 100,000 migratory birds to come here to have rest or spend the winter, including white piano herons, Gulls, Xiaoqing Stilts, egrets and other kinds of birds. In addition to the mangrove plant group in the protection area, there are also 55 other species of plants. It is regarded as a green corridor in district of Shenzhen city, backed by a wide range of beautiful coastal road and fused with the coastal ecological park. It is also facing the rippling Shenzhen Bay. Here is not only a paradise for birds to habitat and a plant kingdom, but also a perfect place for people to hike to watch birds, sea view and experience the natural style. Shenzhen Mangrove Nature Reserve is gradually famous among tourists from home and abroad. Once visitors come to Shenzhen, they must go to this place to see the waterfront eco-park with meandering mangroves along the coast. And visitors can see tens of thousands of wintering waterfowl gathering here in winter, which is spectacular. Shenzhen Mangroves and Hong Kong Mai Po Nature Reserve are separated by a river. They together constitute the Shenzhen Bay wetland ecosystem and have become the most characteristic landscape of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border.

Urban population is increasing at an unprecedented speed. Density’s growth is inevitable. The living space has to be extruded from the ground up to satisfy the need of dwelling area. Each skyscraper is like an isolated island. We suggest a sky street at the height of 150 meters to connect all these unjoined realities and we superposed it in order to liberate the ground floor and let place to nature.
This new urban typology, the sky street, reproduces the qualities and infinite possibilities of the typical street. Central alley, variety of programs, human scale and freedom of plan and section planning allows to have a new layer of street which makes possible a new range of activities, impossible in the typical tower. This new urban typology is ideal for social encounters, creating a lively, non-generic situation in the high density urban condition.

New Cities: Shuiwei village in Shenzhen
“In the 1950s, the people’s way of life was just as farmers,” 65-year-old Zhuang Tiefeng explained, standing on a roof pointing to areas of land now occupied by large city buildings.
“After the opening up and reforms, Shuiwei village had experienced huge changes. The old way of farming gave way to new industry and business and we were given city IDs.”
In 1979, Shuiwei was incorporated into the new city of Shenzhen as part of a government drive to establish special economic zones around China. Shenzhen now houses a population of over 10 million people and is widely considered one of the world’s fastest growing cities. Much of its success has come from foreign and domestic investments into new manufacturing plants.
Special economic zones were established in three other cities- Shantou, Zhuhai, Xiamen as well as the whole island of Hainan following the 3rd plenary session of the 11th CPC Central Committee in 1978. It was a move that started a boom in foreign investment into China and the rapid growth of coastal cities.
For Zhuang Tiefeng, who grew up in Shuiwei in a simple farming community, not all the changes have been positive. “The disadvantage is the young teenagers have a comfortable life and lack strong ambition. Their lives may be too comfortable.” But when looking to the future, Zhuang is optimistic, “new technology and high speed trains will connect us better to the rest of China and the world. I don’t like to guess the future but I feel it is bright.”

Gwadar: The new Shenzhen?
CLICK THE LINK BELLOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PROPERTY IN GWADAR
Shenzhen was formerly a small fishing town in China with only 30k inhabitants, today has over 12 million people. The city started to change at a rapid speed from 1980 when it was declared a special economic zone. Since then it became a home for many high tech companies and manufacturers. In 2017, Shenzhen’s gross domestic product was a staggering $338 billion dollars.
Throughout the years, China saw how Shenzhen became a symbol of a changing and developing China and it was time to stretch its economic reach even more. Together with Pakistan, China founded The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and decided to invest $62 billion in Gwadar, a developing and thriving area next to the coast of Pakistan.
Just like Shenzhen, Gwadar has been declared as a special economic where important companies and business will be able to operate in a tax-free zone for 42 years. Thanks to the $4.7 Billion investment from China in Gwadar Port for building facilities such as in logistics, international trading, financial services, and fisheries, the port became the most important business hub of Pakistan.
Shenzhen and Gwadar have more in common than people think. Both are port cities, special economic zones. With the same backing from China, Gwadar is destined to become the next Shenzhen.
