The Pyrenees - Episode 03 - Lourdes, Laruns, Berdún, Col du Pourtalet, Pamplona

In this 3rd episode of our journey through the Pyrenees, we depart the mystical town of Lourdes in France to ride deep into the french Pyrenees. From there we encounter an unexpected road closure at Col de Soulor that forces us to take a detour which turned out to be a very exciting road. As we zig zag through the mountains, we stop in the town of Laruns, a very picturesque French town were we indulge in some delicious crepes. Once done, we take up to the mountain road again into one of the most magnificent scenery's we have ever ridden in our lives, the Col du Pourtalet. At the top of the mountains, we reach the French/Spanish border. Once in Spain we descend the mountains until we reach the small village of Berdun, a very rustic and magical medieval town perched on a mesa. From there we travel to the spectacular city of Pamplona, also know for the world famous running of the bulls during the Fiesta de San Fermin. Jeudi 5 Juillet 2018, une super sortie clubs avec le club de Nogaro et le club de Saint Germé la montée du col du Pourtalet (en Espagnol Portalet). Le diminutif Pourtalet de l'Occitan pòrt (« col, passage »).
Le Pourtalet est un passage frontalier entre la France et l'Espagne, entre la vallée d'Ossau et la vallée de Tena.
Situé à une altitude de 1 794 m, il surplombe le cirque d'Anéou et offre une magnifique vue sur le pic du Midi d'Ossau. Nous sommes partie du village de Louvie Juzon* et nous avons fait l’ascension depuis Laruns (29km).
Le col du Pourtalet a été franchi une seule fois par le Tour de France, en 1991, lors de la 13e étape entre Jaca et Val-Louron. Le Belge Peter De Clercq y est passé en tête.
Ma première montée si longue et si haute heureusement le temps ni trop chaud ni trop froid pas de pluie. Je me suis détaché du groupe afin de pouvoir profiter de ces cartes postales qui défiles sous mes yeux. Passage au village de Eaux Chaude* souvenir de colonie de vacances lorsque que j’étais Minos. Aujourd’hui le village est triste et fait penser a un village fantôme dommage que tout est à l’abandon.
J’étais en compagnie de Bernard un cyclo de mon club qui lui aussi voulait profiter de la montée tranquille du cyclotourisme en fait !
Mais malheureusement Bernard a dû déclarer forfait au 10 derniers kms victime d’incident mécanique (roulement de l’axe pédalier Hs) impossible de pouvoir réparer sur place. Il a dû attendre le retour des membres du club. J’ai continué les 10 derniers km en solo des pentes finale entre 5 et 9 % sur les hauteurs un peu de chaleur et voila le panneau Col de Pourtalet franchi et heureux d’avoir fait cette montée.
*Louvie Juzon aux pieds des Pyrénées. Le village doit son nom à la présence ancienne de loups (louvie). C’est un des villages les plus peuplés de la vallée (1000 habitants). On y trouve des maisons anciennes des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. L’église Saint-Martin (XVIe) possède un ensemble de belles sculptures sur les chapiteaux et clés de voûte. la chaire est en bois doré et sculpté. Le buffet d’orgues est du XVIIIe siècle et inscrit aux MH. Chaque été sont organisées dans l’église les Estives Musicales Internationales (festival de musique classique).
*Eaux Chaude petit village et station climatique classée (altitude 675m). Au pied du Pic du Midi d'Ossau, à l'orée du Parc National des Pyrénées, à quelques kilomètres de la frontière Espagnole.
Dans la merveilleuse Vallée d'Ossau. Les sources sont sulfurées, sodiques, calciques et silicatées. Elles sont riches en glairine et barégine.

Laruns is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. Laruns is situated at the confluence of two mountain streams, the Gave d'Ossau and its tributary, the Valentin.
Formerly part of the province of Béarn, Laruns is now within the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, itself in France's Nouvelle-Aquitaine région. It forms part of the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie, and is the chef-lieu of the canton of Laruns.
Laruns is geographically the third-largest commune in metropolitan France, after Arles and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. It includes a large area of upland, around and between the Gave d'Ossau and its tributaries, stretching as far as the border with Spain at the Col du Pourtalet, 30 km (19 mi) to the south of the village of Laruns. The principal artery of communications through the commune is the D934 road, which runs south from the town of Pau, 40 km (25 mi) to the north, to the Col du Pourtalet. The D918 road branches off the D934 in Laruns village, and follows the Valentin before crossing the Col d'Aubisque to Argelès-Gazost in the next major valley to the east. There are no direct roads westward from Laruns.

Pyrenees & Pico's Motorcycle Tour | Ep1 | Col Du Tourmalet.
Welcome to a brand new tour series. This is episode one of six, in which myself and two mates went on an Epic Motorcycle Adventure that started in Devon and would see us ride from Roscoff in the north of France, through the Pyrenees mountains and eventually west to the Pico's de Europa mountains before heading home on the ferry from Santander.
In the six days we covered close to 2000 miles through some of the hottest days I've experienced on a bike. 40 degrees centigrade is not pleasant from inside a motorcycle helmet.
However it was an amazing experience and I'd do it all again.
Episode one has you join us as we ride the famed Col Du Tourmalet. It didn't disappoint.
